See additional information here. The Mineola Nature Preserve on the Sabine River encompasses 2,911 acres located in Wood County, and is home to East Texas species of critters that can fly, walk, crawl, and slither, and home to more than 193 species of birds, numerous wildlife, longhorn cattle, and a pristine wetlands environment. Imagine walking along a railroad bed built in the 1860s as you step

back in history. Owned by the City of Mineola, this is part of a comprehensive development plan to protect our natural wildlife and habitat for future generations. The park is an escape to the quiet of nature and the solitude of yesteryear. With construction beginning in 2002, the Preserve is being constructed with matching grants from Texas Parks and Wildlife Department and others and maintained by funding from the City of Mineola. Walking, hiking, biking, birding, wildlife viewing, equestrian trails (over 20 miles), fishing ponds, picnic areas, primitive camping areas, Recreational Vehicle Utility Connections at THE DERBY, two pavilions with restrooms, playground and educational opportunities abound. Don't miss the active beehive on Johnnie Bendy Trail that can be viewed behind safety glass. There is an abandoned rail bed that lends itself well to accommodate walkers, and a history of that era that romanticizes the area that is recognized by historical markers, such as the Hasinai Tribe of the Caddo Indian Nation. This area is an ideal corporate retreat with facilities to support either a short term or long term stay. According to an article in the November (08) Texas Parks and Wildlife Magazine, this Preserve is in the top 15 city parks in the nation for its size. The goal is to make the list as a top 10 choice destination for educators, birders, hikers, bikers, disc golf enthusiasts, equestrians, and local, regional, and national groups. In many respects, the site is still in the visionary state, with both progress and plans continuing to develop. The Pavilions can be reserved by calling (903) 569-6183. The rental fee is $100.00 per day. Also a $50.00 deposit (which is refunded upon clean up and removal of trash).

The Mineola Fire Department recently hosted the Kindergarten class from Mineola Primary School to teach the young students about fire safety in a fun and engaging way.

The students enjoyed a lively puppet show that helped explain important fire safety tips, followed by a demonstration of what a firefighter looks like in their full protective gear. The children also had the chance to practice the life-saving technique of "Stop, Drop, and Roll" as part of the hands-on learning experience.

A big thank you to the Mineola Fire Department team for their dedication and support in educating the community's youngest citizens: Aaron Munn, Operations Chief, Mike Davis, Firefighter, and Jamie Finley, Firefighter for their time and expertise!

Mineola Landmark Commission’s “Past and Present” Home Tour

The Mineola Landmark Commission welcomes you to join them for their “Christmas Past and Present” Home Tour. It will be held Sunday, December 8th, from 1 to 5 p.m.

Tickets are $20 each and may be purchased ahead of time at City Hall and from any landmark member. Tickets may also be purchased the day of the tour at any participating site. Proceeds from the tour will benefit Iron Horse Square and Junior Historian projects.

Four locations will be featured on the tour. Two homes will be representing the past: the McDonald home which is a 1930s Tudor Revival home located at 401 East Kilpatrick, and the Wisdom home which was built in 1892 and will feature an outdoor winter wonderland in the pool/garden area located at 512 Sycamore. Representing the present is the Roberts home which is a new build at 2311 CR 2720. Also on the tour is the Mineola Country Club which will honor the legacy of the past. Due to the loss of the original building by a fire, it has recently been rebuilt and is helping keep a piece of Mineola History alive for the present and future.

Refreshments will be served at each location and door prizes will be awarded.
