This weekend we started trapping at a new colony that has gone unchecked for years. We trapped 15 adult cats and grabbed up 7 kittens. 10 of the adults were fixed at Operation Catnip on Sunday then the remaining 5 went to Smoky's Spay & Neuter Clinic yesterday. Our good friends at Cat's Cradle of Greater Richmond took the kittens for us. There are still at least 7 adults to be trapped and likely 2-3 more kittens so we will be continuing our efforts at this property.

We've had to make the heartbreaking decision to pause all intakes until further notice. We started as a TNR group and because we love cats and understand the overwhelming population vs rescue ratio, we have taken in many cats/kittens since we've opened. We realized we just do not have the resources or the following to find these cats homes. With kitten season already here, we still have kittens from last year that we are struggling to find homes for. We have virtually no volunteers or fosters so the work is spreading us too thin. Thank you to anyone that has fostered, volunteered or donated. We surely appreciate it and we will continue our efforts by trapping, fixing and returning community cats within the area. We hope you understand and please try to refrain from tagging us in posts of people asking to take kittens. It breaks our heart to say no.

Trisha and Skyler hit the road this week and took Thor to his long awaited consultation at NC State College of Vet Medicine to see if he was a candidate for their new low dose radiation therapy for FIC.

What is FIC?
Feline idiopathic cystitis, also known as feline interstitial cystitis or FIC for short, is a type of feline lower urinary tract disease that causes inflammation of the bladder in cats.

“Idiopathic” means that the cause of the disease process is unknown; “interstitial” refers to the location of the inflammation in the interstitium, which is the space between the cells in the bladder. This inflammation leads to a thickening of the bladder wall.

Many of you know, Thor came to us back in October when he presented to a local emergency vet with a urinary obstruction. Unfortunately, his owner was unable to afford the expensive hospital stay to relieve his obstruction so he was signed over to TPBH and he received the life saving procedure. After what seemed like an eternity, Thor was finally "out of the woods" but we knew it would only be a matter of time before he could potentially have another urinary obstruction because there is over a 35% chance a cat would re-block after a prior obstruction.

Miraculously, we came across this study where they used low dose radiation therapy to help treat cats with FIC. Immediately, we reached out and communicated with Dr Kendall, who was able to get us set up with an appointment and some funding to go towards Thor's procedure.

Fast forward 2 months later, the day has finally come... Thor goes in for his consultation and we get to meet the lovely Dr Kendall. They kept Thor there for the day to run some additional diagnostics such as X-rays, ultrasound, urinalysis and blood work. We got a call a few hours later that his results were mostly normal and she felt he would be a good candidate for the therapy. Unfortunately, part of having such a successful outcome would mean we needed to have Thor in an environment with limited stress because stress is a BIG factor in cats with FIC flare ups. We expressed our limitations to Dr Kendall, given the fact that we've been searching for a foster home for Thor for a while now, with no such luck and we knew adopting out a cat with prior medical issues would be a task.

To our complete surprise, Dr Kendall offered to adopt Thor! She fell in love with his sweet nature and knew she could provide him with any aftercare and environmental changes he needed. We discussed this amazing news with Thor's previous owner who has been in contact with us since he was surrendered and though it was an incredibly hard decision for her, she agreed he would be better off with Dr Kendall. We came by after his treatment to say our goodbyes and wish him the best of luck with his new family. We couldn't be happier for Thor. 💜

Trisha and Skyler had an exciting day last Friday while taking sweet Lil Mama to Animal Eye Care of Richmond. Lil Mama has a chronic weepy eye and upon her exam Dr.Bosiak assured them that Lil Mama's weepy eye was due to scar tissue on her tear duct and doesn't seem to bother this sweet girl.
