How we care for our horses changes along with the season. Here's some interesting info about how to help keep our horses cool and happy through this hot summer.
This is a great bunch of information for this time of year!!! This week has especially been hot!! At the ranch, we focus lessons in early morning and late evening (as weather permits) and summer camps engage with horses during the coolest times during the day or else we do laid back games with our equine partners.
Our Project Horse Jesse is offically looking for her forever home. She's been with us for about 2years and done wonders for herself and the program. She's joined in lessons, talk sessions, gabs and general frivolity.
She loads, leads, picks up all 4 feet and is generally a Saint. She needs 30days of professional training to finish her training off to be a perfect riding or driving horse. Not for beginners. Could be a wonderful therapy pony one day. She'll do anything to be loved on and groomed.

Happy Pride Month from all the horses (and humans) at RoCo Horsemanship and Heart to Heart Ranch!
As a gay cowboy, I know that there's no one right way to be an Equestrian. And finding the safe space to be myself around horses hasn't been easy. Here at RoCo Horsemanship you can be your fullest, truest, most wacky self right here at the Ranch! We are a safe space for LGBT+ folks to find connection with horses, nature and other q***r folks. We are a LGBT+ owned and operated small business offering lesson program located proudly in Mineral VA!
And because pictures speak louder than words I'll just let the expressions on the faces of our participants in these pics do the talking.
Happy Pride! Go try something new this month! You might just love it! ❤️ 🐎🏳️🌈
For details about lessons and more please DM Ro Cohen or RoCo Horsemanship directly.
Jesse would be such a cute carrage driving pony! She's got skill!
Jesse update!
Ranch project horse Jesse learning new skills left and right. Her newest ability is to Long Line!
Now you might be thinking to yourself "what is Long Lining?" Well its a training skill aptly named for working a horse with long lines connected to the halter or bridle while the human fallows along behind the horse on foot. Commonly people see Long Lining used when driving a horse from a cart or using a horse to plow a field.
We are Long Lining here to help Jesse understand what rein cues are. How to give to rein pressure, what that feels like and means. Understand that the human is still leading and that we are sort of dancing together. Teaching her from the ground how to steer like this will help keep a nice calm level headed horse when we are ready to get on her back for her first rides.
Just so proud of how far out lil Blue Ridge Mountains Mustang has come this year.
She bonds so strongly and really wants to connect emotionally. I think she will be a great partner to someone one day.

Do any of my Lesson folks need a pair of riding boots?
Ariat Paddock Boots size 7B
They are in great shape!
Someone donated these boots to us a while back and I totally forgot about them.
It's been a week of weaning for these big babies at Heart to Heart Ranch the past week! 🙌 The Mammas and babies are all adjusting well and happily independent now!
The babies Dove and Legacy are staying with their Aunties while their Mommas Jessie and Mella go a different pasture. It's been just about a week and everyone has calmed down and starting the settle into their new routines.
I cant wait to work with Jessie more routinely. It'll be the first time since we've had her that she won't be limited by pregnancy OR a foal.
Volunteers! Today is the day! It's Orientation Day! Located at Heart to Heart Ranch in Mineral TODAY (1/26/24) @ 4pm! We will start with a tour of the barn, go over the rules, and answer any questions. It will take about 30mins. Cleaning buckets, caring for the saddles and equipment, eventually brushing horses and more. That kinda stuff! Bring a friend or come on your own! No experience needed. Wear shoes you don't mind getting muddy... it is still muddy out despite the 70* weather.
For the address and any further information please message us here on FB Messenger or Ro Cohen directly. See yall at 4pm today!

A snowy winters ride for Jordan (she) and Lego ❄️⛄️
Great job you two with being adaptive to the snowy/muddy footing and snow falling off the barn while continuing to learn new riding skills.
BIG 🐴 news!
Santa came early!
We bought a draft horse!
Magnolia is a gentle giant 💗 She is exceptionally calm and quiet. She's a great listener and is very mindful of her rider/person.
If you've been on the Wait List for lesson due to weight limit your wait is over! Call, text, or DM for a Tour of the ranch or to schedule a Lesson.
Give a gift of lived experience!
Gift Certificates for private or group Lessons now available ranging from $50-200. Appropriate for all skill levels.
I love giving my students options when it comes to the tack (aka equipment) during lessons. I'm often shocked with what they want to ride in. We play with Western, English, Dressage and Ba****ck styles of equipment while learning the basics. Students get to practice a little bit of everything while figuring out what interests them most! Eventually Students find what sparks their interest and we re-establish new personal riding goals from there! Come find out what style or tack you prefer these days!
Lessons available on Tuesdays and Fridays! Weekly or Bi-Weekly Lessons available. Costs $50/hour. Sliding Scale Available.

Time sure does fly!
Dove is looking more and more like a horse and less like a baby foal these days!
This morning Bekah did a ground work Lesson with some of our new horses Charm and Spice. The goal for the Lesson was for Bekah to approach lil baby Spice. When that went seamlessly we changed the goal to, see if Bekah can could touch Spice. Some context here is that Spice has had little to no handling and really isn't sure about humans yet.
After Spice figured out that we are here to be calm and loving, she got really into the lesson let her walls come down a bit. Spice LOVED the scratchies and let Bekah pet her all over. Bekah did wonderful by maintaining a very quiet energy and listening to Spice's body language. Earning Spice's trust and creating a horse/human bond. Bekah set the vibe, tone, energy whatever you want to call it, quiet enough that both Charm and Spice fell asleep during the session. Great job today Bekah! 🌈✨️💓🐴

Jordan started Lessons 4-ish months ago with the goal of being able to step confidently into a volunteer position at any barn. And of course wanted to get back in the saddle! "I had previous experiences on horses from childhood and from a handful of lessons an adult, but I never felt at home at any barns. I stumbled across RoCo on someone's recommendation and Ro took me on a tour a few days later. I loved his laid back but confident attitude and his knowledge is extensive. He lets me go at my own pace and work on bonding with the horses I'm working with, which means a lot to me and gives me confidence in the arena. I feel very comfortable around all the lesson horses and I've learned enough that I can start volunteering at local rescues at their barns, which is a huge win." Weekly or biweekly lessons are available on Tuesdays and Fridays. To volunteer please contact us through the page. Like in bio.
Happy super-dupper Retirement Levi ❤️ You retired from Harness Racing long ago. Now this gentles giant is offically double retired from regular rides with his favorite rider Gera. The Vet said his tendons just can't take it anymore and our horses comfort is always important to us. Levi will be a Companion horse or Pasture Pet from now on and we don't love you any less! 💕We aren't done loving on you yet! And dont worry, we will still visit with snacks and chats soon. Thanks for being the best horse for Gera, Amanda and me. Let the Retirement Party begin! Thanks for everything Amanda and Myrtle Point Stables ! None of this would have happened without your hard work!

Join the fun this Saturday at Barn Days for another round of painting with horses! Details can be found on a Barn Day Flyer. Check previous posts for the flyer. You wont want to miss this!
Foster horse Jesse and her filly Dove were napping yesterday when I came to work so I very quietly and slowly snuck in for a snuggle with Dove. Both Momma and baby are in the stall during the days and out at night as an effort to help mitigate how many steps Jesse takes in a day. Poor thing is still painful in the hoof from the Laminitis she got due to retained afterbirth. Hopefully soon they will be back in pasture full time. Until then I'll just have to keep snuggling them! 😍🐴
