What is Neuromuscular Equine Dentistry?

Where does Neuromuscular even fit into dentistry? What makes it specialized? How can this help my horse?

Common questions! Letโ€™s start with WHAT it is. Neuromuscular dentistry focuses around the biomechanics of the Temporomandibular Joint (TMJ) and its correlation to the rest of the body. This seemingly small joint attributes to major body/muscle functions for the horse. From the growth of hooves, to alignment of the skeletal system, to proper nervous system function; the teeth contribute to everything!

How is it โ€œspecializedโ€? Neuromuscular Equine Dentistry is all done by hand. NO POWER TOOLS. Which allows for extreme precision on each stroke of the float. The horseโ€™s head remains at a neutral/natural position during work, meaning the jaw is in a natural position. When the head is raised or elevated, the jaw slides back and the teeth would not be in the same alignment as when itโ€™s lowered (remember we are going for balance!). And the speculum is opened and closed frequently for ultimate TMJ comfort and allowing the horse to feel each adjustment.

How can it help your horse? By focusing around the biomechanics of the TMJ and correct mastication (chewing) patterns, as well as the overall make up of the horseโ€™s body, confirmation, and structure; the horse is able to form proper muscle mass, longer holding body work, better digestion of the nutrients being received and so much more. Overall creating a natural balance for body, mind and mouth.

*Note: We work with vets, farriers, osteopaths, chiropractors and many other bodyworkers. It takes a team to achieve optimal mobility

Walking over a raised pole requires greater flexion in your horse's joints than trotting.

๐Ÿด Walk your horse over a pole on the floor.
๐Ÿด Gradually raise it until it's around knee height.
๐Ÿด Encourage your horse to lower his head to look at the pole.

โœ… Lifts and flexes the back, hip, shoulder, elbow, stifle and hock.
โœ… Strengthens the muscles and structures involved in engagement, hip flexion and pelvic stability.
โœ… Improves suppleness and flexibility through the shoulder, elbow, hip, stifle and hock.

To really see the benefits do this on a daily basis. To make it easy to incorporate this exercise into your daily routine, place a raised pole, or small log somewhere you regularly walk such as on the route to and from the field.

I hope everyone had a safe holiday weekend!
I'm going to answer a a few common questions I've been getting.

Q) Can you just work on one specific area?
A) I can work on a specific area however it is most beneficial to the horse to massage the entire body. Most of the time it's a chain reaction that causes one area of the body to have issues. To best help the horse and fix the known area, I massage the entire body so every muscle is loose and not causing any more issues and i can feel if they are holding tension anywhere else as well. So for that reason I always massage the entire body regardless of problem areas. Of course I can and will spend more time on that specific area when I get to it.

Q) How often should my horse get a massage?
A) That depends entirely on your horse and your goals. Every horse is different, some require more attention than others. If you are competing frequently I would recommend once a week or every other week. If you prefer more leisure riding and your horse generally has no known issues than once a month can be very beneficial. There is no right or wrong answer as massage cannot hurt your horse.

Q) There's no reason to Bemer if my horse had a massage, right?
A) I use Bemer as an added benefit with massage. Though the science behind both share similarities, they each offer their own benefits and compliment each other. So no, it is not required to add a Bemer session with your massage, however it can be very beneficial to do both for your horse.

Q) Do I still need a chiropractor if I use a Massage Therapist?
A) Yes. Massage and Chiropractic are both their own form of therapy. Massage is very helpful when scheduled with Chiropractic, if your horse needs it. Massage on its own is all about the muscles and keeping the muscles functioning how they should. But massage cannot reset a joint. If your horse needs chiropractic work done, I recommend scheduling a massage before your chiropractic appointment. This allows me to help soften your horses muscles allowing the chiropractor to more easily reset joints and it also helps the joint hold because the muscles are no longer tight and pulling on that joint.

I've been getting alot of good questions and I'm happy people ask them! The more you know about your horse and what's best for them the happier they are!
Feel free to contact me with any other questions!
