As far as brushes go, it depends how long you like to keep your dog, their hair type, and how often you get them groomed.

Slicker brushes from left to right, the little black brush I might suggest for a puppy that is getting used to brushing and the feeling of it. It probably won’t do too much in the way of bigger tangles. The blue brush (Show Tech) is longer pinned and it doesn’t have those soft white tips on the ends, which makes it more heavy duty and gives it the ability to brush mats out more efficiently. The coral brush (Chris Christensen) is my heaviest duty brush that I swear is made out of unicorn tears. It costs a pretty penny, but if you have a large breed, thick/ long coated dog 🐶 this is the brush for you.

For a more gentle, but effective brush for daily use is the pin brush. The wooden (Kenchii) brush with the long pins is great for daily upkeep and isn’t as damaging to hair as a slicker brush might be. It is not meant to de-mat, it is used for preventative measures to avoid matting at all.

I also highly recommend a metal comb to check over where there are mats- any time it snags is where you need to go back over with the brush. If you take a look at the picture of the comb (Chris Christensen) there is smaller spacing on one side and larger spacing on the other. The larger spacing side is the best part of the comb to go over with first after brushing and then extra fine tuning with the smaller spacing side after that.

Is detangling spray worth it? If you have a longer, thicker coated dog I would say yes. The more you are brushing your dog, especially if there are mats, the easier it is to damage or break the hair. Damaged or broken hair makes it much more likely to re-mat and it will happen faster. You may know for your own hair that brushing wet hair will decrease the chance of breaking it, as is the same with dog’s. Spritzing a bit of a detangling spray or leave in conditioner before brushing can help tremendously! Or brushing during the bath process.

I have had a lot of interest in shampoo and conditioner recommendations!

I use the brands Igroom and Quadruped, but they can be a bit difficult to find anywhere other than on grooming supply sites. A couple of other brands I recommend would be Nature’s Specialty or Isle of Dog- which you can find on Amazon or Chewy and may be a bit more cost effective.

Most of these products are ready to use, but if you get a concentrated product you will want to delude it in a mixing bottle. Mix a fresh bottle of shampoo and dump out whatever is not used- do Not save for later. Once shampoo/conditioner is mixed with water it starts to build bacteria and washing your pet with it the next time could lead to major irritation.

Because human and dog PH levels are different, using products we use on ourselves are not beneficial to your pet and could even be harmful over time.
