Good Morning and friends! Tis the season for lost pups here at Camden. This morning, a sweet female golden retriever pup was following some teens in the neighborhood and they brought her to us. We estimate she is under one year old. She has a pink collar, but no tags or microchip.

We have contacted Minneapolis Animal Control who will place her on a stray hold this afternoon.

Do you know who her people are? Please share this message!

Hello friends! September is Animal Pain Awareness Month.
DETECTING and MANAGING PAIN in our companion animals is a challenge that we often see in the clinic, and one that we LOVE meeting.

Why? Because diagnosing and treating the causes of pain can help change the quality of life of our furry friends for the better. Giving them MORE GOOD DAYS. 🫢🌞

There are so many options to help your companion: laser treatment, medication, physical therapy exercises, and massage are just a few. And we are HERE to HELP. πŸ‘©β€βš•οΈπŸ§‘β€βš•οΈπŸ©Ί

What's your experience with pain management for your fur baby?

This is still a major concern for pets eating grain-free or β€œboutique” diets. Please feel free to schedule a nutrition consult with one of the Doctors at Camden if you’d like to know more or further discuss some great, safe diets options for your pet and their individual needs!

Yesterday we had two wonderful Golden Retrievers, ages 6 and 2, come in for elective surgical procedures. Both dogs had a history of eating a well-known and popular grain free diet for several years. In one dog, an arrhythmia (irregular heart beat) was detected so an x-ray of his chest was taken. His heart was enlarged, so an echocardiogram was scheduled for that afternoon. An x-ray was also taken of the other dog's chest as a precaution, and his heart was also enlarged. He was able to get an echocardiogram same day, as well.

The reports on both dogs just came back, and both of these gorgeous, otherwise perfectly healthy dogs have Dilated Cardiomyopathy. The cardiologist suspects that in both cases it is related to their diet. Thankfully, this condition was caught early, and when fed a traditional diet, their condition should hopefully reverse. Their cases are being reported to the FDA, along with the thousands of others from across the country.

There is no evidence to support feeding grain-free. Most pet allergies are related to environment (pollens, etc) or protein sources. Grain allergies account for a tiny fraction of all food allergies in dogs. Unfortunately, many dogs are becoming very ill or even dying from eating so-called "BEG" diets (boutique, exotic, grain-free), and the terrible thing is nutritionally mediated dilated cardiomyopathy is 100% preventable. There have been zero reported cases of NMDCM in dogs eating foods that meet WSAVA guidelines, currently made by Purina, Hill's, Iams/Eukanuba, or Royal Canin. We strongly suggest if you are feeding a "BEG" diet that you change your dog over to one of the brands listed above. If you have any questions specifically related to your pet, please call us.

We are so hopeful we caught this disease in time for our two beautiful patients to reverse their disease. Their very caring and dedicated owners have already changed their diet to one that meets WSAVA criteria. The articles below will help explain this disease, WSAVA guidelines, and why grain-free was more marketing than science.

This sweet Pembroke Corgi puppy Leia hasn't had it easy in her first 18 weeks of life. Recently, she and her mother were attacked by a neighboring dog.

Thankfully, our friends at Animal Emergency & Referral Center of Minnesota were able to perform life saving surgery on Leia. Today we saw her for a recheck to continue her ongoing care and recovery. Despite everything, Leia was so excited to meet a new friend in her veterinarian, Dr. Paige's dog Tiki. Dr. Melcher got to steal a few snuggles too!

We hope Leia's story raises awareness about the importance of responsible supervision for our dogs. But it's not all sad. Leia's owner told us about how much support she received from her community after this incident and how impactful having that has been for her and Leia's recovery.

Pet ownership truly impacts our communities. Not just because having pets can make us better humans in the world, but because they tie us together in our neighborhoods or out in public for better or worse. We hope that all of our have a great weekend, and spread the best of what pet ownership can be in their community.

Walz family tells Vogue that if Scout had a motto, it would be: β€œIf I can reach it, I can eat it.”

Thanks Vogue for making our dog Scout a cover model. Let’s hope this fame doesn’t go to his head.
