One meaningful way to celebrate a cherished pet who has passed away during the holiday season is to give back in their memory. You might consider volunteering at a nearby animal shelter, making a donation to a charity that holds significance for you in their name, or bringing treats to the veterinary hospital that cared for your beloved companion. Often, the best way to nurture ourselves is by caring for others.

"Because dogs live in the present. Because dogs don't hold grudges. Because dogs let go of all of their anger daily, hourly, and never let it fester. They absolve and forgive with each passing minute. Every turn of a corner is the opportunity for a clean slate. Every bounce of a ball brings joy and the promise of a fresh chase." -Steven Rowley, Lily and the Octopus

The holiday season can be particularly challenging when we're grappling with the loss of a cherished pet. The absence of a furry friend who once brought so much joy can intensify feelings of grief and loneliness during what is traditionally a festive time. It's crucial to acknowledge that these emotions are entirely normal and valid. In such moments, because holidays are times of tradition, it may be helpful to reflect on your family's traditions, and to consider starting a new tradition to honor your beloved pet -- lighting a candle in their memory, a new ornament or decoration, or putting up special photos that remind you of all the good times you had together. If this is your first holiday season without your pet, we hope that you can think of all the happy times you shared, and that in time the grief that you are feeling will become easier.

Sundowners syndrome – the worsening of dementia symptoms at night — is common in people with dementia and in older pets, too. While there isn't a cure for sundowning or dementia in dogs, there are things you can do to help them feel more at ease.
Has your senior dog's personality and lifestyle done a 180-degree turn? We'll study a typical degenerative and progressive dementia that hinders an aging dog's consciousness and adaptability to their regular surroundings.

"Dogs…do not ruin their sleep worrying about how to keep the objects they have, and to obtain the objects they have not. There is nothing of value they have to bequeath except their love and their faith."

MN Pets is an in-home euthanasia service that operates in and around the Twin Cities and Duluth-Twin Ports area. Our doctors travel to families’ homes to help give a gentle goodbye to their beloved furry family members.
Several years ago, our founder, Dr. Rebecca McComas, recognized the importance of home euthanasia for her family’s two elderly beagles. Having only experienced saying goodbye to a beloved pet in a clinical setting, she was struck by how different it felt to be at home. It seemed natural to bring this much-needed service to other pet owners, and so she started MN Pets in 2010, the first exclusively in-home euthanasia practice in Minnesota.
Since then, the team at MN Pets has grown to include other highly qualified veterinary professionals who share a common interest in supporting people and their pets through end of life care. Each of our doctors and support professionals have a similar understanding and appreciation for the bond you share with your pet, and the benefits of saying goodbye at home.
We believe that pets deserve a gentle hand and voice, and people need compassion and support as they go through this difficult experience.
The Buddy Fund
We have a fund in place, called the Buddy Fund, which helps us offer a little bit of assistance to families who are in need of our services but have fallen on hard times. Their pets are also deserving of a peaceful goodbye at home, surrounded by love, and we are so grateful when we are able to help make that happen. If you would like to donate to our Buddy Fund, to help these families give their beloved pets that peaceful goodbye, follow the link below.
