Diamond
08/01/2011 - 07/10/2024

"Diamond came into our lives in our early 20's. She was abandoned on the street by her previous caretakers after having 7 babies months prior, she was in rough shape but her spirits were high - it was clear how special she was. A kind construction worker found her and brought her to a local clinic who happened to know her and after weeks of trying to find her people realized no one was looking for her. In that time, the staff at the clinic came to love her and though she was too rambunctious for many homes, she eventually settled into a home where she was the only pet for many years, spoiled and adored. Through her almost 13 years of life she got into lots of curious and near death situations and was brave through everything. Big thanks to Blue Cross Animal Hospital for saving her and Homey Gnome for giving her 3 more years of life after intestinal cancer. She is survived by big-little-sis Windy, her predecessor she helped choose from rescue."

Losing a beloved pet is never easy. Talking with supportive friends, joining a grief group, or creating a memorial can help with the healing process.

It's normal to have questions and feel unsure during this time. What matters is that you gave your pet a life full of love, and choosing to let them go is often the kindest—though hardest—act.

As for whether dogs know they're being put to sleep, there’s no clear scientific answer. While dogs can sense pain or illness and may feel something is different, they likely don’t understand death or euthanasia. The process begins with a sedative to keep them calm, followed by medication that gently ends their life. They may feel sleepy and relaxed, but not fearful.

Euthanasia is designed to be peaceful and painless, ensuring your pet’s final moments are filled with comfort, not fear.

As we welcome a new year, we know many of you are facing one of the difficult “firsts” after saying goodbye to a beloved companion. The first holiday season, the first quiet night, the first New Year without them - these moments can feel heavier than expected. Please know your feelings are valid, and it’s okay to acknowledge that it’s harder than you imagined, that your heart still hurts, that you miss their presence. Hold onto the love and memories you shared with your precious pet, and know that we hold you in our hearts too.

“When we think of those companions who travelled by our side down life’s road, let us not say with sadness that they left us behind, but rather say with gentle gratitude that they once were with us.”— Author Unknown

A heartfelt way to commemorate your pet during the holidays is by making an ornament or decoration in their memory. Perhaps you had MN Pets create a clay print of you dear pet’s paw that you would like to use in your holiday decoration. If you have not pierced a hole in the wet clay and it has now dried, you can glue a piece of ribbon or twine to the back of the ornament using hot glue.

MN Pets

MN Pets is an in-home euthanasia service that operates in and around the Twin Cities and Duluth-Twin Ports area. Our doctors travel to families’ homes to help give a gentle goodbye to their beloved furry family members.

Several years ago, our founder, Dr. Rebecca McComas, recognized the importance of home euthanasia for her family’s two elderly beagles. Having only experienced saying goodbye to a beloved pet in a clinical setting, she was struck by how different it felt to be at home. It seemed natural to bring this much-needed service to other pet owners, and so she started MN Pets in 2010, the first exclusively in-home euthanasia practice in Minnesota.

Since then, the team at MN Pets has grown to include other highly qualified veterinary professionals who share a common interest in supporting people and their pets through end of life care. Each of our doctors and support professionals have a similar understanding and appreciation for the bond you share with your pet, and the benefits of saying goodbye at home.

We believe that pets deserve a gentle hand and voice, and people need compassion and support as they go through this difficult experience.
