This message is so important to read. So often people have unrealistic expectations of dogs, and therefore get frustrated and give up too soon. Before you buy/adopt a dog, do your research. Be aware of the specific breed's personality traits. If they say they are high energy, believe it. You can't take that trait out of a dog, and it is unfair to expect them to adapt to a lifestyle that will set them up for failure.

UPDATE: The owners of this dog, a.k.a., Scooby, have been found! We are hoping they will be reunited this afternoon when Minneapolis Animal Control opens. Thank you so much for everyone that shared this post and allowed us to find his owners!

A good samaritan brought this dog to East Lake Animal Clinic this morning. He was found on Franklin Avenue and West River Road in the Seward neighborhood. He was found with a collar on, but no tags and is not microchipped. If you recognize this pup, or know of anyone looking for him, please give us a call. Thank you!

The Fourth of July is the busiest time of year for animal shelters. Be sure your pet has up to date ID tags, keep your pet indoors during fireworks, and keep them on leash to prevent them from running away from fear. Even if they've never been scared before, better safe than sorry.

Although lilies are a beautiful and very fragrant plant, they can pose a threat to cats inside and outside. If you have a cat, it is best to keep the lilies out of your house this Easter. If you have cats that go outside, you also need to be aware of any lilies you might have blooming in your yard as well. The more dangerous, potentially fatal lilies are true lilies, and these include Tiger, Day, Asiatic, Easter and Japanese Show lilies – all of which are highly toxic to cats! Even small ingestions (such as 2-3 petals or leaves) can result in severe kidney failure. If you know or suspect that your cat has consumed any part of one of the listed lilies, please call us right away so we can help you determine the next best step.

It is FINALLY feeling like summer in Minnestoa again! The warm temperatures bring the annual reminder about dogs & hot cars. Leaving your pet in a hot care for even a short period of time could kill your pet. Even with all of the windows cracked, the temperature of your car can reach deadly levels quickly. Pets do not sweat the way humans do. They CANNOT cool their bodies efficiently in hot temperatures. Make seasonal adjustments to your daily routine to keep your pets safe and healthy in the summer heat. Shade offers little protection on a hot day and moves with the sun. Leave your dog at home when you know you are going to have to leave the dog in the car for any amount of time. A five minute visit to the store can easily take longer than expected, and in 10 minutes the heat in your car can increase by 20 degrees from the outside temperature. Please leave your pets home in warm weather. They will be happy to see you when you return! :)

These two cuties were guests at East Lake this week to have their spay surgeries. Miss Florence is featured wearing her Surgical Onesie, while Miss Raven is pictured sporting her E-Collar that was included with her surgery. Both of these items will keep them from licking their spay incisions while they heal. Although we rarley see any complications from a spay or neuter surgery, when we do it is almost always because a dog or cat was able to come in contact with the suture area, and end up chewing/tearing them out, or excessively licking and causing infection. There are also other options that you can find online like the donut type of collar, or a soft sided version of the plastic E-Collar. No matter what you choose for your pet, as long as they are left on, the recovery process will be much smoother!

Hello East Lake community. We have recently had some clients who's pets have been bitten by a coyote on East River Road in St. Paul, across the Lake/Marshall bridge. We have contacted the city about this issue, but in the meantime, please be aware, and careful, if walking your pet in this area. See the following link for tips when dealing with coyotes in the city. Take care, and stay safe.

The first record of them being mentioned was in the middle 1500's, in a nursry ryhme. It started out, “A is an Archer, B was a Blind-man, led by a dog.” Here are a few more facts about guide dogs.

Many people will be celebrating Easter tomorrow. Unfortunately along with the fun of this holiday, there are many dangers to pets. Here is a list of the top 6. If your pet has ingested something they should not have, and you are concerned, the best place to start is the Pet Poison Helpline. They are experts in toxins and the possible threat they may cause to your pet. They do charge a $75 fee for the phone consult, however, it can bring peace of mind, and the right advice needed in the case when your pet needs emergency care. You must have a case number from the Pet Poison Helpline in order to be seen at an Urgent Care/ER facility when a toxin is involved. With safe planning, you can avoid all of these holiday dangers and just enjoy the day with family and friends!

Happy weekend everyone!

1. Chocolate
Chocolate is toxic to your pets and could result in an expensive Sunday emergency vet visit.

2. Xylitol
Make sure to hide sugar-free candies sweetened with xylitol up higher than your Easter-basket-hunting pets can reach. Even in small amounts, xylitol is extremely toxic to your furry family.

3. Lilies
Lilies are especially dangerous to cats but should be kept from dogs as well. Lilies in the genera Lilium and Hemerocalis are all toxic.

4. Plastic grass
The plastic grass used to line Easter baskets and displays is an accident waiting to happen for your pets. It isn’t digestible and can cause very serious tummy troubles. Thankfully, there are paper options that are safer!

5. Table scraps
People food is too rich for your pet’s belly. It is never a good idea to dogs or cats human food as treats. Make sure you tell your guests this rule, and keep your garbage secured in an area you pets have no access to.

6. Candy wrappers
Wrappers pose dangers to both dogs and cats whether there is candy inside or not. Plastic and foil cannot be digested and can cause discomfort if they don’t pass naturally.

This cute little fella is Louie! He is a 7 year old Terrier Mix that was adopted at the Humane Society in February, 2021. He came to us this year for his annual wellness exam, and Dr. Cherie recommended he take a heartworm/tick borne disease test. Unfortunatley, he tested positive for heartworm disease. Louie was originally from a southern state and a rescue group transported him to MN. Although a mosquito in any state can bite and cause heartworm disease, the cases are much higher in states with a warm, humid climate, that don't have temperatures cold enough to kill them off yearly. We have seen a very high increase in dogs testing positive for heartworm, due to the number that come into rescue from the south. Luckily for Louie, it was caught early and his new owners are doing all the necessary treatment to helo get his heart healthy again! Monthly heartworm prevention is recommended year round, and does a lot more than stop heartworm disease. It also controls intestinal parasites. Depending which brand you use, that may include roundworms, hookworms, whipworms and tapeworms. Please call us to find out what options we have available for your cat or dog.

It's National Pet Day, 2022! Here is a little more about this day and how it all began.
National Pet Day was founded in 2006 by a woman named Colleen Paige. Paige is an animal welfare advocate and a pet and family lifestyle expert. The day was established to highlight the importance of pets in a person's life and to celebrate the joy that pets bring to our lives. Paige also wanted to shed light on many pets and animals who are waiting at shelters to be adopted. She motivated and encouraged people to adopt pets from shelter homes and rescue organisations, instead of going to a breeder. "Don't shop! Adopt!" became the holiday motto.
Colleen Paige's effort was first recognised in the United States and soon gained recognition internationally. Many countries including the UK, Australia, New Zealand, Spain and Scotland celebrate this day.
You can honor your pet on this day with a treat, a new toy, a long walk or just a big hug! If you are lucky enough to have a pet of any kind, you have a lot to be grateful for! 🙂
