While we're helping our clients understand their dogs , we make a lot of comparisons between dogs 🐕 and young human children. 👶

We KNOW that dogs are not the same as children. BUT. The similarities are much greater than the differences. Ignore for a second that dogs walk around on four legs and are covered in fur, and look at what we have in common:

💜 We are both mammals with complex central nervous systems that shape how we interact with the world around us. Oxytocin, dopamine, coritsol, adrenaline... it's all the same whether it's coursing through a dog's body or a human's.
💜 No two humans are exactly the same, just as no two dogs are exactly the same. Every individual has their own unique personality with differing likes, dislikes, and needs.
💜 We are both social creatures with a biological need for safety and connection. When we don't feel safe and supported, we experience both phsyical and mental health problems.
💜Both dogs and humans are shaped by nature AND nurture. Some traits we're born with, and some traits were caused by our upbringing. Our early experiences greatly influence who we become as adults.

These are all reasons why we believe dogs deserve more than old school obedience classes! Manners are important, but dogs are not robots or unfeeling stuffed animals. Their happiness matters to us. Their sense of safety matters to us. Their social lives matter to us. When you hear us comparing your dog to a toddler, it's only because we want you to see just how amazing your dog really is. 💜🐕🥰

If you feel like the fur always flies the most during stressful situations... you're not wrong!

A sudden flurry of dog hair is a common stress response in shedding dog breeds. If you're noticing an influx of hair floating through the air, paired with other stress signs such as panting, pacing, wide eyes, etc, that means it's time to step in and come to the rescue! 😮

Who couldn't use a little more JOY in their life!? 🥳

Giving your dog opportunities to experience unbridled, tongue-flopping, ears-blowing-in-the-breeze joy isn't just about making your dog feel good: It helps YOU feel good too! Dogs who lead fulfilled, happy lives are so much easier to live with. (Plus, isn't it freeing to let go of boring adult stuff for a while and let your inner child come out to play?! Happiness is contagious!)

C'mon, let loose a little. Nobody lies on their deathbed lamenting that they had too much joy in their life. Chase that squirrel. Roll down the car windows. Jump off the dock. Find a warm beam of sunlight and bathe in it. Share an ice cream cone on a hot day. Seek out adventure in your own backyard. Whatever you and your pup do for fun, live it up. We're SO here for it.

Whenever we're asking our dogs to do anything, we want it to be achievable! Knowing the three categories of obedience behaviors helps us decide what is appropriate to ask of our dogs at any given time.

💜If your pup is amped up from a rollicking good play session, use those movement based behaviors! Let him wind down slowly rather than asking him to go from running 100 mph to lying stock-still in a down stay. 😵‍💫

💜If your pup is nervous about his environment and afraid for his own safety, it's not fair to ask him to make himself feel even more vulnerable by lying down, or worse, being stuck in a stay. If he's only a little nervous, catch his attention with some simple spins and twirls. If he's totally nervous, don't ask for anything at all! Emotional safety and support always comes first. 🥰

💜If your pup is a youngster, it's not realistic to ask for impulse control behaviors in a busy new environment. His brain is still growing and his full attention span is still coming online. These things take time and practice! As he develops, your pup will become more and more capable and you can ask for these challenging behaviors in more and more environments... until then, remind yourself that your dog is just a baby. 😉

No matter what, never ever EVER feel bad for taking your dog's feelings and unique circumstances into account. It's not a failure if you have to take a step back and go to an easier behavior. It's especially not a failure if you have to abort mission all together and get your dog out of a situation he isn't equipped to handle. Knowing your dog and being his hero are the true hallmarks of good trainers and loving pet parents. 💜

If your perfect puppy suddenly seems like a totally different dog, don't panic! Your lovable, good-natured baby is still in there, he's just drowning in hormones and teenage drama. 😱

To survive the "teenage" years:
⭐ Continue with training, but be realistic! If you have to make your games a little easier to win right now, that's totally okay. Keep rewarding all of the good behaviors you can. Make sure you're keeping things fun, and you're properly motivating your pup.
⭐ Know that this is a TOTALLY NORMAL thing that happens to everyone! Keep telling yourself that this too shall pass, and life with your pup will get easier again.
⭐ Continue offering plenty of exercise and enrichment to get those ya-yas out. It is SO much easier to live with a dog whose needs are being fulfilled by human-approved outlets.

Remember... you can do this! If you need extra help, hit us up. We got you. 😘

There's nothing wrong with using food for enrichment, but here are four easy ideas that require no food at all!

This is your chance to be silly, let go of boring "adult" rules, and have some fun! Dogs are social creatures, and they can totally pick up on your vibes. The more you get into it, the more fun your pup will have! Life's too short to be boring. 😉

Did you know that dogs can sweat? It's true!

Rather than getting sweaty pits, dogs sometimes get sweaty paw pads. Just like in humans, sweating can be a sign that the body is trying to cool itself off, but it can also be a sign that the body is stressed. Watch for other signs of stress such as tongue flicks, panting, and dilated pupils to confirm your suspicions.

By learning doggy body language, you'll be able to step in and manage stressful situations before they escalate. Your pup says thank you for having his back! 🐶💜🥰

Yay, springtime! 🌸👍🥳
Boo muddy paw prints... 🐾👎😩

We've got an easy life hack to help keep your floors neater that involves ZERO training: play tug!

Keep a special tug toy hanging by your door, and play tug while your puppy stands on an absorbant door mat. As he digs his feet in to pull with all of his might, he's wiping lots of water and dirt on the rug INSTEAD of tracking it through your house. Yippee!

04/26/2024

The more we learn about our dogs' body language, the better we can recognize their feelings and support them. Sometimes the signs of fear can be pretty subtle! Here are six ways your pup may display fear:

⭐1. Refusing treats. If your pup who usually loves his snacks is not interested, there's some big emotion going on! Often, this is fear.
⭐2. Snapping & snarling. Oftentimes, people mistake blustery behaviors for confidence, but it's just the exact opposite: scared dogs may feel like they need to puff up big to defend themselves!
⭐3. Sudden stillness. The "freeze" may last for quite some time, or may be just a couple of seconds.
⭐4. Avoiding eye contact. Dogs who don't make any eye contact are often communicating, "Oh man, I don't want any trouble! Let me be!" in an attempt to escape confrontation.
⭐5. Drooling. Some breeds of dogs drool regularly, but drool stemming from fear is out of the norm and often foamy.
⭐6. Looking all around. Some amount of looking around is normal, but looking around in all directions or constantly scanning the environment is a sign of hypervigilance. Think of it as feeling so nervous that they must "keep on a lookout" for dangers in their environment.

If you've got a scaredy-pup on your hands, we'd be glad to help you out! You know we got you! 🐶😘

04/24/2024

All too often our solution for certain behavioral problems involves depriving our dogs of a thing they enjoy. When a dog guards toys, we take them away. When a dog wants to chase squirrels, we hold them back. When a dog strains at the leash to say hi to other dogs, we avoid other dogs all together. It's a major bummer for the dog!

Simply avoiding all of these triggers makes sense on the surface, but all that's doing is burying our problems for later and making those situations even more intense when the trigger inevitably pops up later. The dog without toys will cherish any objects he does get more deeply and guard them more than ever before, maybe even to the point of ingestion. The dog who never gets to chase prey (or a prey substitue) only feels more and more enticed and enraged by the neighborhood squirrels. The dog who yearns to play with other dogs but is never allowed becomes even more frustrated and reactive as time goes by. Deprivation doesn't work, but do you know what does? ...Saturation! *cue chorus of angels singing in revelation* 😇😂

This same principle applies to humans, too. I, for one, love chocolate. When I'm dieting and I'm not allowed to eat chocolate, I CRAVE it. Chocolate ads on TV make my tummy rumble. The check out line feels like a guantlet where I stare at the candy bars and fight temptation. When I inevitably cave to my desires, I end up eating the entire bar in one sitting!

Saturation helps to "scratch the itch" and keep normal desires from becoming all-consuming cravings. I can allow myself a few bites of chocolate every so often to stop myself from binging on an entire box. The dog who guards toys can be given SO many toys that they are no longer a precious commodity. The dog who wants to chase can be taken to the park to indulge in squirrel chasing, or provided with similar outlets like a flirt pole or lure course. The dog who pulls to see other dogs on walks can meet his social needs with play dates or visits to the dog park. Once our dogs' (or our own!) needs are regularly met, passing up an opportunity here or there is no big deal. We've already scratched that itch!

04/22/2024

Marker words aren't rewards. They aren't punishments or penalties. Marker words are, well... markers. They mark stuff! Think of them as a bridge that links a specific action to a specific consequence.

When we say "yes" to our pups, we're saying that whatever they were doing at the exact moment we said "yes" was exactly what we wanted... AND there's going to be a reward!

When we say "too bad," we're telling them that whatever they were doing at that exact moment was not something we wanted, and they're going to miss out on something fun as a consequence. Womp womp!

If we fail to follow through with either the reward or the consequence, our marker words start to lose their meanings and our dogs stop listening to them. That's when we run into trouble... Ruh-roh! If you aren't prepared to follow through, skip the marker words. 😉

P.S. Don't forget to check out our videos about clear communication, marker words, and time-outs in our eCourse! You'll be communicating with your pup like a pro in no time, pinky promise. 😉💜

Flexi leads can be a great tool to use with your pup.

There. We said it! 🫣

Many professional dog trainers act like using a flexi lead with your dog will amputate your fingers or scar your dog for life. We call BS! Flexi leads are a tool that can be safely, properly used to enhance your walks if you use a little common sense.

⭐️Do we recommend the flexi lead to navigate crowded city streets? No.
⭐️Do we recommend the flexi lead for large, strong dogs? No.
⭐️Should you use a flexi lead in stores or on patios? No.
⭐️Do you need to be careful not to drop the plastic handle and scare the 💩 out of your pup? Yes.
⭐️Does a flexi lead allow your pup extra space to sniff in wide open areas where it's safe to do so? Heck yes! That's the perfect use for a flexi lead!

You can definitely use a long line if you prefer, but we hate wrangling all of that extra slack. We find that long lines get snagged on bushes, drag through the mud, and are a general pain in the butt to regularly use on walks. If the long line is more your speed, go for it! We think long lines a great tool and we definitely use them, too.

But if you've got a smaller dog and you know the proper time and place for a flexi lead, well... go ahead and use it. We won't tell. Call us a bunch of rebels, but we're all about that convenience. 😉

"It came out of nowhere!"
"He never acted like this before!"
"This isn't like him at all!"
"He would never do this!"
😲😲

We hear statements like this all the time when we get dog bite or aggression calls. Thankfully, dogs' behavior isn't random. They don't wake up one day and choose violence just for the fun of it. Dogs may bite for a variety of reasons, but there are warning signs... IF we know what to look for.

By learning dog body language and behavior, we're able to identify when our dogs are scared, hurting, or nervous and intervene before problems escalate. We can get sick or injured dogs to the vet more quickly. We can intercede when we see people acting inappropriately with our dogs. We can learn which activities make our dogs happy, and which activities make our dogs uncomfortable. We can learn how to de-escalate tension and help our dogs feel safe. Our dogs are giving us SO much information, but we often aren't paying attention or simply don't understand what they're saying. This lack of communication can lead to very dire consequences for both you AND your pup.

We know, we know. We sound like a bunch of downers, but here's the good news: dogs are, in general, quite resilient and adaptable creatures. Knowing even the basics of dog body language can make an immense difference in the care you can provide to your dog. No one is ever too old to learn new things, and no dog is too old to appreciate and respond to your thoughtful efforts at communication. When we know better, we do better!

So stick around. Ask questions. Watch our eCourse. Listen to your Dog Life Coach narrating the body language they see in our off-leash classes. We got you, and your dog says thanks. 💜

Do dogs need to take baths sometimes? Yes. 🐩🛁
Do dogs need to hate bathtime? No. 🐩😍

Making accomodations for your puppy is NOT cheating! Puppies are young beings with very limited experience of the world around them. New stuff can be downright terrifying... how are they supposed know that taking a bath is perfectly safe?!

Take your time during those first puppy baths. Be gentle. Play silly little games. Offer up the tastiest of treats. Any effort you make to ensure bathtime is a positive experience will help your puppy learn that they're safe being scrubbed in the tub. 🥰

For puppies reaching social maturity, playing just isn't the same anymore!

Not only will your puppy play with other dogs less than he used to, but he'll also become more selective with age. Gone are the days of playing any game with any dog he meets - your pup is becoming a discerning young gentleman! He knows what he likes to play and what kind of friends he wants to hang out with. There's nothing wrong with this... it's just how growing up works! Lean in to what your pup likes and let go of the things he doesn't. There's no sense in trying to force our dogs into playing in ways that don't suit them. Afterall.. play is supposed to be FUN! 🤩🐶

Is your puppy reaching adolescence and trying your every ounce of patience? Mine is too!

It’s normal. Big feelings and big hormone changes need patience and gentle persistence.

Ever wondered why a puppy's behavior seems erratic during adolescence, which occurs between six months and 18 months of age?

The neurobiology of adolescence is fascinating, with some key events that alter both the structure and function of the brain.

During canine adolescence, s*x hormones are changing which effects the animals stress responses. Adolescent dogs have a decreased ability to modulate sensory processing and subsequent behavior.

The connectivity between the frontal cortex (responsible for decision making) and amygdala (responsible for emotional processing) decreases, resulting in less behavioral control.

So what does this mean? This could mean that your dog, who used to come when called, suddenly cannot. This could mean that your dog, who didn't jump up on guests, suddenly does. Your dog that walked nicely on leash is now pulling. Or perhaps it seems like some days your dog responds to behaviors you ask of them, and some days they don't, without any rhyme or reason.

We also see increased risk taking and more sensitivity to fear.

As your puppy undergoes this transition into adulthood their inner world is intense, even chaotic. Many pet owners experience an increase in undesirable behavior and find themselves becoming increasingly frustrated. In turn, frustration and impatience sometimes cause us to act unpredictably.

This adds to your puppy’s inner turmoil. When the inside and the outside are both unpredictable it can be difficult for puppies to adjust.

By understanding this we can gain greater compassion and understanding. When we approach adolescence with patience we can help create a world that is predictable and gentle so our puppies grow up to be their best selves.

There are so many weird, new sensations at the groomer. The more we can normalized these sensations, the easier grooming trips become!

Start your pup's beauty career off on the right paw by playing lots of little "mini games" at home. Playfully aim your blow dryer at your pup and chase it with a snack. Go ahead and make bath time fun by climbing in with your puppy and offering tasty snackies. Pet between those little toesies when you've got a sleepy, snuggly puppy on your lap. Prepping your puppy for grooming doesn't have to be hard or time consuming - repeating these short, easy activities really adds up to a lot of experience!

Your dog will need grooming for his entire life, and nobody wants their pup to require sedation or a muzzle to get his hair cut. This training may not be as flashy or as fun as some other things, but we promise it's 1000% worth it in the long run. 😍🐩

Comforting your dog when he's upset is ALWAYS the right move!

Being a hero doesn't have to be hard! Be the one to step in and say, "No thanks, my dog doesn't want to be petted." Go ahead and carry your puppy if he's overwhelmed. Run away from scary situations if your pup isn't coping. Turn the other cheek when well-meaning folks say you're spoiling your dog by being loving and kind. Science has our back and tells us that we never need to use pain, fear, or intimidation! Period.

When you put on your cape and become your dog's hero, you are building a rock-solid foundation of trust and safety. Safe dogs are happy dogs. Safe dogs are social dogs. Safe dogs have the emotional bandwidth to train.

Keep rescuing your dogs. We see you, and we're so very proud. 💜

Yeah... most of these behaviors are bummers. BUT. They are totally entirely completely 100% normal puppy behaviors!

Try to muster up as much patience as you possibly can when you bring home a new puppy. There is SO much to learn about being a family dog! New puppies have no idea that some of their favorite things to do are socially unacceptable in a human household. While they're babies, the best strategy is management based. Slap up a few baby gates, offer plenty of distractions, and be prepared to redirect those puppy naughties!

Raising a puppy is no easy feat. If you're on the struggle bus with your new puppy, we'd be glad to come to you to work on solutions and tire out your precious little devil. We promise nothing lasts forever, and you are DEFINITELY not alone! 🥰🐶

03/22/2024

"Is the dog upset?"

If the answer is yes, then it's not the time for training. If the answer is yes, there's only one path we should take: offering safety, support, and connection.

We cannot train a dog out of having emotions. We cannot force a dog to "get over" perceived threats to his safety. It would be cruel to expect a terrified being to perform for us. Instead, it's our responsibility to recognize our dogs' feelings and help them cope. We can manage situations that are too difficult for our dogs to handle. We can offer soothing touch, distracting treats, and our calming presence. We can run away from scary threats together. There are so many different ways we can offer safety, support, and connection, but obedience skills ain't it. The fastest way to a happy, healthy, well-behaved dog is to make him feel safe.

We will always, always, ALWAYS put your dog's emotional well-being at the forefront of our training and management plans. Pinky promise.

Resource guarding is common! Dogs who resource guard are NOT:

❌ "Alpha"
❌ "Dominant"
❌ Trying to "show you who's boss"
❌ Bad

Dogs who resource guard are scared they're going to miss out on the good stuff! By understanding WHY a dog is resource guarding, it's much easier to fix. If you've got a tenacious guarder on your hands, we'd be happy to help.

Would you work harder on a project if you thought you were going to get a big bonus for it? Yes? Your dog is exactly the same!

Frustrating, difficult tasks become a little more bearable when your dog knows a big payout may be just around the corner. If a small handful of treats is the difference between a pup who LOVES to train and a pup who is "meh" on the whole thing, wouldn't you gladly spend those extra treats? We sure think it's worth it!

You hear us talk about offering safety, support, and connection all the time. (Sorry, not sorry!)

Ever wondered what safety, support, and connection looks like? The answer is... it depends! Just like humans, dogs have different personalities and need different things at different times. You may find comfort in a tight hug after a hard day, but you probably wouldn't want a hug if you were scared to death inside of a haunted house... you'd probably want to get the heck out of there! A different person may not even like hugs at all, no matter what's going on. See what we mean? This truly is an "it depends" type of question!

So how do you know how to offer safety, support, and connection to your pup? Listen to him! Learn to read his body language. If he's not enjoying something, don't do it. If he's saying he wants to run away, run away together! If he's huddled up close to you, get down on his level and be with him. We want to see stiff bodies start to relax. We want to feel rapid heart beats and frantic movements slow down. We want to respect our dog's needs and provide rescue any way they need it. We promise it's not spoiling your dog - it's meeting a basic biological need for safety. 🥰🐶

03/08/2024

Think about what it'd be like to live amongst giants. How would you feel if the giants around you kept picking you up and moving you around while you were busy trying to go about your day. It might be scary. It might be frustrating. If they kept doing it often enough, you'd probably come to hate being reached for and carried around. You might even actively hide or run away from the giants whenever they came near you!

That's how puppies can feel, too. They've got their own thoughts and feelings, but too often it's the human's way or the highway. If we want to raise our puppy to enjoy being picked up and carried, we need to let them have some say in the matter!

🐩 If you have to pick up your puppy, warn him before you reach. Tell him you're going to pick him up so that he's not surprised by a sudden swoop up into the air. Sometimes a little advanced warning is all they need to feel safe! If your puppy is still struggling or uncomfortable, turn on the sweet happy talk and offer some snacks. We want being held in your arms to be a positive experience.

🐩 If your puppy is busy (safely) doing his own thing, let him! Our dogs have their own preferences and desires, and sometimes they deserve to just do their doggy business without having us get in their faces. Your puppy will let you know when he's ready for lovin's. Constant (unnecessary) interruptions to their play and exploration are annoying, frustrating experiences for puppies.

🐩 If you're holding your puppy, do not hand him to other people. Your puppy may be okay with being passed around like a hot potato, but he also may not. If strangers want to say hi to him, great! Put your puppy on the ground and allow him to vote with his feet. If he wants to say hi, he'll go over and do so! If he's unsure, too busy, or afraid, he'll let you know that too. This small concession to our puppy's desires goes a long way towards building trust: he will know you won't ever force him into scenarios he's not comfortable with!

Sometimes you just gotta do what you gotta do and carry your pup. That's okay! It happens. That's a part of caring for a living being. Do the best you can to honor his wishes when possible, and always help him feel safe and supported. Before you know it, you and your dog will have an awesome relationship that is .

Dogs aren't out to manipulate us. Although it may feel like it, they aren't trying to torture us. They don't painstakingly plan their actions to show us who's boss. They're not masterminds trying to trick us. Dogs do what they do because it works for them. It's as simple as that!

Is demand barking annoying? Heck yes. Is it a pain in the butt to fix? Yep! But demand barking is nothing more than a behavior that at some point was rewarded by us, intentionally or not. Dogs only do what works for them! Behaviors that are not reinforced go extinct. See-ya!

If you're struggling with demand barking at home, you know we've got you. (And also, know that you're in good company... we've got a fair share of demand barkers at home, too. 😉 )
