What Is That Lump?! Let’s Talk About Lipomas

Have you ever found a soft, squishy lump under your pet’s skin and wondered what it could be? One common cause is a lipoma — a benign (non-cancerous) fatty tumor that many dogs (and sometimes cats) develop as they age.

Here’s what you should know:

-Lipomas are usually harmless, slow-growing, and not painful.
-They’re most commonly found under the skin on the chest, belly, or legs.
-Some pets may develop multiple lipomas over time.
-Although benign, it’s important to have any new lump checked by your vet to rule out other, more serious conditions.

Here's what you can do:

-At your pet’s exam, we can evaluate the lump and often perform a quick needle test (called a fine needle aspirate) to confirm whether it’s a lipoma or something else.
-If you find a lump or bump on your pet, don’t panic — but don’t ignore it either. Give us a call to schedule a quick check-up. We’re here to keep your furry friend healthy from head to tail!
