Dehydration occurs when the body experiences an excessive loss or inappropriate intake of water. Just like us, dogs and cats rely on water to keep their bodies functioning normally! Organs like the kidneys, liver, and even the brain rely on proper hydration! You can look for signs of dehydration in your fur-babies, by checking their mouth and skin.

Mouth: Look at their tongue and gums. If they are dry, and/or if their saliva is thick, there is a chance that they could be dehydrated. The gums should be moist and their saliva should be more "watery."

Skin: You can also check hydration by performing the "skin turgor test". Gently pinch and lift a generous amount of skin between your pet's shoulder blades, and then let go. A properly hydrated pet's skin will return to normal quickly. If you see the skin slowly returning to normal, this may indicate moderate dehydration, and if the skin remains "tented" this indicates severe hydration - please call your vet!

It is also possible that you may see vomiting, diarrhea, low body temperature, and fever along with the above. If your pet is lethargic, in pain, or has not eaten in 24 hours, please seek veterinary care immediately! If you are seeing moderate to severe dehydration, contact your vet! Do NOT give any dry food or access to large amounts of water until speaking with a veterinary professional, as this can make the problem worse.

With heat waves sweeping across the country, blue-green algae is appearing in new areas and posing an increased risk to pets.

Found in lakes, ponds or any source of standing water, it’s extremely toxic and consuming it can be fatal. The best way to prevent accidental poisoning is to keep a close eye on pets when they’re around water.

If you think your pet has been exposed, take them to the nearest emergency veterinary hospital and contact the ASPCA Poison Control at 888-426-4435.
