This kitty came to see Dr. Joe for a very interesting suspected ovarian tumor.
During surgery, this very peculiar mass was noted, but it wasn’t an ovary…or a tumor 🫣

After removal, the mass wasn’t a mass at all! It was a skeletonized fetus that the body was trying to reject!!

Thankfully she will finally be on the road to recovery ❤️‍🩹

❄️ Cold Weather Warning for Pet Owners! ❄️

With these freezing temperatures, it’s important to keep your furry friends safe and warm inside! 🐾 If they have to be outdoors for any reason, make sure they have a safe, dry shelter to protect them from the elements.

As the cold weather settles in, little critters like mice are seeking warmth inside homes—and this often leads to an increase in rodenticide use (such as Tomcat, DCon, etc.). 🚫 Please, please, PLEASE do not leave rodent bait anywhere that your pets can access. These poisons are extremely toxic and can be deadly if ingested, even in small amounts.

We’ve seen a troubling increase in rodenticide ingestion cases over the past few days, and the damage can be irreversible without immediate veterinary intervention. 🏥 If you suspect your pet has ingested rat bait, seek veterinary help right away!

Stay safe and keep your pets cozy and secure. 🐶🐱❄️

🚨 ALERT: Your Cats and Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (Bird Flu) 🚨

There’s been a lot of buzz and questions about Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) and its potential risks to pets, including cats. Don’t panic, but stay informed—prevention is KEY!

🔑 Here’s What You Need to Know

1: Stay Calm – Avoid Media Hysteria
Media coverage can sometimes amplify fear. Focus on factual information and consult trusted veterinary professionals for guidance. Don’t trust your local facebook group that heard it from a friend of a friend of their neices’ cousin’s brother in law that heard it from George at the truck stop off mile marker 112. Trust your veterinary professionals!

2: Avoid Feeding Raw or Unpasteurized Foods
Do not feed your cat unpasteurized milk or raw meats that haven’t been USDA-inspected.
Raw poultry products, in particular, can carry pathogens, including avian influenza.

3: Keep Cats Away from Wild Birds
Prevent interactions with wild or deceased birds, which may carry HPAI.
If you live in an area experiencing outbreaks, keep your cat indoors to minimize exposure to potential carriers.

🚨 Watch for These Symptoms in Cats:

Sneezing, coughing, or difficulty breathing
Tremors, seizures, or unusual movements
Vomiting, diarrhea, or lack of appetite

⚠️ If your cat shows ANY of these signs, contact your vet ASAP. Early care can save lives!

🚨Illinois has yet to have a confirmed case in a domestic feline 🚨

First, we want to thank you for trusting us with the care of your beloved pets. We understand how important they are to you, and we strive every day to provide the best possible care for every patient.

That said, we feel it’s important to remind everyone of a few things about how we operate:

🐾 We Are an Appointment-Based Practice
While we always aim to accommodate as many patients as we can, there is a limit to how many pets we can see in a single day. While we try to accommodate as many patients as possible, our practice has limitations in both staff and time. We may be able to add an emergency slot, but this is not guaranteed. Overloading our schedule impacts not only our team but the quality of care we can provide to every patient.

🐾 Our Team Works Hard to Accommodate You
There are times when we stretch our schedule to help more patients in need, but this means longer days and additional strain on our small team. We do this because we care, but we also ask for your understanding that we can only handle so much in a day.

🐾 Kindness Goes a Long Way
We understand how stressful it can be when your pet needs care. However, please remember that our team is doing everything they can to help. However, yelling, using derogatory language, or becoming irate and threatening our team is never acceptable. Our staff members are here to help you and your pets, and we ask for your patience and understanding as we navigate busy days. Respect for our team is non-negotiable.

Our team is here because we genuinely care about your pets and their well-being. We care deeply about every pet that comes through our doors and work tirelessly to help as many as possible within our capacity. We ask for your patience, kindness, and cooperation so that we can continue to provide the quality care your pets deserve.

This naughty elf came to see Dr. Joe on emergency for sudden vomiting and lethargy. No, we didn’t find the missing elf on the shelf, instead we found a GDV with concurrent enteric obstructions.

Dr. Joe and the surgical crew went right to work to perform a little Christmas miracle!

After correcting the volvulus and removing a few feet of blankets and plastic, this doggo pulled through and will be home for Christmas - recovering by the fire and surrounded by the family that loves him ❤️

FLEAS & TAPEWORMS!! Did you know Tapeworms are caused by flea infestations or exposure to fleas! Not only can your furry friends develop these little creepy crawly creatures, but so can you! When a human accidentally ingests an infected flea or other infected material, the tapeworm larvae can then develop into adult tapeworms inside the human's intestines 😰 We have seen so many cases of active infestations from pets without prevention, and those that utilize over the counter topicals or collars. If you see tapeworms or fleas, please reach out to your veterinarian!

‼️HEARTWORM DISEASE‼️ We have had an unprecedented number of Heartworm positive cases this year. PLEASE, keeping your pets on prevention year round is the best way to prevent this completely preventable disease. Heartworm is transmitted through mosquitoes, and is a serious disease that results in severe lung disease, heart failure, other organ damage, and sometimes, even death. It does not matter if you spray your yard, have a fence, sprinkle oils in your yard, dance the anti-mosquito cha-cha, etc. If you live in the Midwest, mosquitoes are everywhere, and it only takes one! Please, use prevention, and keep your pets protected 🙏

Dr. Joe had an intriguing referral involving a unique mass on a patient's skull. Thanks to our state-of-the-art CT scan, we were able to provide the owner with a clear diagnosis and a solid treatment plan moving forward. We're proud to be one of the few facilities in the state with this advanced imaging capability, making a real difference for our local pet community!

Meet Oakley! Oakley was referred to Dr. Joe for a Videofluoroscopic Swallow Study to determine the extent of her megaesophagus and check for any abnormal motility or structural changes Fluoroscopy is a type of advanced imaging that allows us to view the inside of the body while it is in motion. The image is similar to that of a radiograph, or x-ray, but instead of viewing a single still image, many images are produced by fluoroscopy to capture motion in real time.
