Shiloh… we wish we could tell you. You make such good eye contact with your loving, almost human like eyes, and it almost feels like you could understand us- we just want you to know you will ALWAYS have enough food from now on… we’re going to make sure of it. When we get calls about retired breeding dogs we never know what to expect. We’ve had some beautiful, well-cared for past mamas come through the program … but then there’s the ones that break our hearts. It seems with breeders and their dogs, there is no “in between.” Shiloh was more than likely kept in an outdoor kennel her whole life - we’ve given her four baths and a groom and she’s still not totally clean 🤪. And worse, she needs to gain a whopping ten lbs (this is a lot of weight when you’re talking about a medium sized dog). So we’ve said it before and we’ll say it again… meet the parent dogs before you buy a puppy. There is more to it than that… but even this simple rule of thumb would cut out A LOT of breeders. It really is overwhelming to think about the crisis of unethical breeding… for now we are just focusing on feeding girl all the food with free range eggs and extra treats 😄 and figuring out what kind of home will be best for her in the future… it’s got to be somebody very special 💖. Impulse control is not a strong suit for most young doodles, including Nutmeg… but look at her now—we are really proud of how far she’s come. Let’s talk about outside studs! We get a lot of questions from puppy parents wondering why we’re using an outside stud and if they can still trust the health & temperament of the litter… Established programs still need use of the occasional outside stud to bring new lines into their program (otherwise you’d end up with inbreeding if you’re keeping pups back) and to potentially bring a new trait into their program like a certain color, improved structure in a certain area, etc. In the case of Thomas, we are excited to get some darker red pups and to potentially keep one back that we could later breed to our own stud (Huck) in the future. But how do you know it’s a quality stud that aligns with the rest of your breeding goals? GOOD question because we’ve heard some horror stories in this regard. For us it’s important to see documentation of health testing and to meet the stud and his owner/breeder beforehand. We allow/encourage anyone wanting to use our own boys for their own program to do the same! Thomas’ owner drove all the way from Florida so we could meet him in person 😁 and as you can see, he’s a huge love 😍. It may look insignificant but we’ve been working HARD on the sitting rather than jumping for attention with little Mocha… it seemed he came hardwired to jump, jump, JUMP like a little pogo stick 😆 We’ve been telling him “off” and prompting him to sit before petting him (which at the beginning was taking 3+ minutes of excited jumping before he could focus enough to sit). But check this out- after only a couple days of consistency, Mocha decided sit without even being told to do so after only a wee bit of jumping! Past Echo X Comet puppy has been inspired by Rocco‘s recent light switch trick 😁… she’s working on steps to learn to close the bedroom door for her parents at night 😆. Teaching your dog to follow a cue from a distance can be tricky … they have to move away from you/the treats to do it which can feel counterintuitive to the dog. When you’re still working on mastering your first trick and your friend comes up to remind you what to do 😉. Meet Mocha- our newest rescue-trainee! Mocha isn’t neutered (yet!) so he has a bit of a marking problem hence his oversized shark diaper 😂… he’ll get there, that’s what training is for! Mocha enjoys barking at his own reflection, eating chicken nuggets, and meeting new people. He and Chance are already thick as thieves! We are really excited to work with this confident little man! Mocha will most likely be reserved by someone on our applicant list once we get to know his temperament but stay tuned just in case!
