If you want a SUPER kid-friendly, snuggly, laidback tiny dog… check out our sweet Paisley. Small dogs sometimes have a reputation for being high-strung, yappy and maybe even quick to bite… that’s NOT paisley 💕. We’ve only heard her bark literally one time 😂 She is such a gentle soul and has amazing focus for a small dog, too. Training is incredibly time-consuming and it’s impossible to capture everything we do behind the scenes on social media. But we really believe in it… not only do we see improvement in manners/behavior but we also consistently dogs develop more confidence and desire to bond with humans ❤️ All four of these trainees are available to meet tomorrow at Freedom Park from 11-1!!! Maple and Rocco’s moyen poodle pups are 3 weeks old and on the move! When dogs have been taught ZERO commands and had limited exposure to people, it is really tough starting with them as adults. The concept is just so foreign. It’s taken us 6-7 days of diligent work to get some dogs to learn their first command. Scooter was one of those dogs— his first 1.5 years of life were spent mainly in a crate… so he had zero skills and zero interest in following a treat lure into a sit. I mean, we literally tried everything… we were starting to wonder if he could ever do it… but check this boy out now- that’s a solid sit 😁. And stay tuned to watch the rest of his progress - he’ll soon be able to do several minute stays with distractions!! Dogs are so resilient - we’ve never had one not be able to learn these things yet. When Scooter graduates, he will be potty trained, crate trained, know all of his basic commands, have solid leash walking and off-leash recall skills and have practiced his commands in many different public environments with distractions and met lots of new people, dogs, and kids. Most of our walks are with dogs who we are actively training to heel… It was so deeply peaceful to walk with just Echo - simply reaping the benefits of her past training (and naturally mellow temperament). Once you’ve owned a good dog for more than a couple of years there’s just a certain cadence that develops - it feels like we’re always in sync with very few words ever needed. It doesn’t happen overnight and there is training involved… but gradually, magic happens. We love this dog to pieces and having her on a little solo trip at the beach is a good reminder of why we’re doing what we’re doing … a well-tempered, well-trained dog is a gift. Zoey 🥹🥹🥹… This is actually the most tempted we’ve ever been to “foster-fail” a dog since we started Red Paw Farm. And if that happens, well so be it… but we’re leaving the door open to the perfect home for Zoey. Things are pretty busy/chaotic around here a lot and she is just a big ol’ couch potato who may want a nice, calm lap to sit on 😉 Zoey was found on a super busy road- literally in the middle of it with cars braking around her. She was sighted there for a few days in a row with another little black dog who sadly did not survive the busy road. She was producing milk but it appeared had not given birth recently (estimated pups to be about 6 weeks old)- after speaking with the local shelter staff and another rescue worker living in the exact area she was found - we are almost positive that Zoey was bred (probably a lot) and then pups taken away too early and she was dumped (vet estimates she’s 6-8 years old, so at the end of her breeding career). No collar, no microchip, missing teeth, fur, and with the most insanely long claws you’ve ever seen 😳! She’s also very underweight so she’ll need to be here for a bit to put on weight before getting spayed. But oh my goodness, what a gentle soul. We’ve bathed her, groomed her, clipped those gnarly claws, and even had to milk her like a cow … and she never even flinched. Zoey is quiet and low key. She tolerates other dogs just fine but prefers human company, ignores the cat, and loves to snuggle with the kids… and everybody for that matter. Introducing Maple’s brand new poodle litter 💕 We can never get enough of watching them twitch in their sleep 🥹 Tree theme 🌳 Girls~ Magnolia, Willow Boys~ Cedar, Aspen, Walnut, Hickory, Sycamore, and Chestnut This litter will be highly trainable and athletic- it’s our secret hope that one of these puppies ends up as an agility dog. It’s our more obvious goal to have some of these pups to go on to do service work. Both parents have genetic testing plus OFAs (hips, elbows, cardiac, eyes, and patellas). Mom has her CGC title and Dad has his CGCU, CGCA, and TKN titles 💙… they are both incredibly trainable and obedient. Both parents enjoy retrieving and mom has great scent drive for a poodle. We can’t wait to see how these babies turn out… LOTS of socialization is around the corner for them. PEEP 🐣! We took some time off from chickens (coyotes forced us to 🙁), but we’re starting fresh with a brand new coop and babies this year. Echo has been around for a few past chick/duckling seasons so we knew she’d be her same laid back self… but it was fun to introduce them to Penny who also had zero interest in them beyond a little sniffing. Having a prey drive is NOT a bad thing- it’s very inherent in most dogs and is also the reason they excel in everything from fetch to herding to scent work so we don’t hold it against any dog who thinks these chirpy tennis balls look fun to chew on 😂 - that is normal canine behavior and can be trained to be useful in many ways. There’s never an end to training… you can always sharpen skills and continue to increase distance, duration, etc. with various commands. Dogs can definitely get “rusty” without consistent practice. It’s been raining all week so no better time to work on our “indoor” skills with some of our resident dogs who often don’t get as much training time as we’d like. Monty has been officially reserved and finally has his real forever name- “Frank” which we think suits him well with his old man eyebrows 💙. Frank was originally a breeding dog living in an outdoor kennel … he was then rehomed to a family who surrendered him to us a few weeks later because he was unsuccessful with potty training. It is VERY difficult to house train an *intact* male as an adult… but guess who doesn’t need his belly band anymore after his little snip-snip last week 😉. Do you like to eat the same thing for every meal? Our dogs really love variety, too! If you’ve been following us for a while you’ll know that we feed a mix of half kibble and half homemade/ human grade dog food. Our dogs are very serious about yummy mix-ins…. Daisy is a 10 week old cavapoo in training and true to her age, “stay” (or ‘place’) has not been her favorite command to learn! We had maxed out at about 5-10 seconds before her patience was shot 😂 but don’t worry - we have plenty of tricks up our sleeve. Our adult dogs are a HUGE help when it comes to training. Dogs take social cues from other dogs constantly - especially when they are puppies. Watch this video closely- Daisy glances at Echo multiple times… including right when she gets corrected, like “oops… what was I supposed to be doing?” Our plan worked- Daisy did a 30+ second place by herself after this video 🥳🥳. P.S. this goes both ways… your puppy will model your adult dog’s behavior for better and for worse! So consider where your first dog is at behaviorally before adding a second! P.P.S. This is exactly how we teach stay/place - verbal correction plus redirecting back to the place over and over (and over and over and over!) for however long it takes.
