Meet Jack, one of our amazing blood donor dogs here at AUCSOC! 🐾❤️ This gentle hero is literally a lifesaver—his donations help critically ill or injured patients get a second chance.

🩸 Why Whole Blood Transfusions Matter:

Whole blood contains red blood cells, plasma, platelets, and clotting factors, making it incredibly valuable in emergency situations. It’s especially important for patients with:

🔻 Low Platelet Counts:

Platelets are essential for blood clotting.

When a pet’s platelet count drops too low—due to trauma, immune-mediated disease, or toxins—they are at serious risk of spontaneous bleeding, even internally.

Whole blood provides a fresh supply of platelets along with other vital components like clotting proteins and red cells, which:

Help stop bleeding

Restore oxygen-carrying capacity

Improve blood pressure and circulation

🚑 Critical Support in Emergencies:

Whether it's a dog hit by a car, a patient with severe anemia, or one fighting IMTP (immune-mediated thrombocytopenia), a transfusion from dogs like Jack can mean the difference between life and death.

Please join us in giving Jack a round of paws and applause 🐾👏 — he’s not just a good boy, he’s a hero. 💉🐶

🦅 What’s more American than helping an eagle on the 4th of July?
At Animal Urgent Care of South Orange County, our wildlife nurse Shannon intaked this incredible eagle rescued from the Madres Fire 🔥 earlier today.

We’re proud to support both domestic and wild animals [from animal services] in times of crisis — especially on a day that celebrates freedom. 🇺🇸💙

AUCSOC is open 24 hours through Monday at 8am to care for patients in need — because emergencies don’t take holidays, and neither do we.

Feathers, fire, and frontline care — that’s how we do the 4th at AUCSOC!

Planning a cookout? With so many dishes on the table, it’s easy to lose track of ingredients—was there garlic in that dip? Raisins in the salad? Coffee-marinated steak? And where did that corn cob go? This week, we’re highlighting common cookout foods that can pose risks to pets.
Onion, garlic, and chives are members of the Allium species of vegetables. Allium species can cause gastrointestinal irritation and red blood cell damage, which can lead to anemia (low red blood cells). Although cats are more susceptible, dogs are also at risk depending on the amount ingested.

Chocolate, coffee, and caffeine are similar in that their toxicity concerns stem from their methylxanthine concentrations (a group of compounds found in these products). When ingested by pets, methylxanthines can cause vomiting and diarrhea, panting, excessive thirst and urination, hyperactivity, abnormal heart rhythm, tremors, seizures and even death. The darker (higher cacao percentage) the chocolate, or the higher the caffeine content, the greater the risk for toxicity. White chocolate has the lowest methylxanthine content while baking chocolate and cocoa powder have the highest concentrations.

🐾 Helping Paws in Need 🐾

It has been our absolute privilege to partner with Mission Viejo Animal Services (MVAS) in the care of seven sweet puppies rescued through the DAWG "A Mission For Home" program.

When these little ones fell ill shortly after their rescue, our team at Animal Urgent Care of South Orange County stepped in to provide overnight and weekend care and medical support. While we significantly discounted the cost to ease the burden for the nonprofit, the cost of supplies, medications, and ongoing treatment adds up quickly.

💙 DAWG is funding 100% of their continued care and could use our community’s help. If you’re in a position to give, please consider donating to support their lifesaving efforts. Every dollar goes directly toward medical needs for animals like these.

📲 Visit DAWG.org or scan the QR code on MVAS's original post to donate via Zelle.

Together, we’re helping give these pups—and many more—a second chance. 🐶❤️

Please keep your pets in mind this 4th of July. Fireworks can be very frightening to our furry friends.
