KK Good Dog Training

KK Good Dog Training KK Good Dog Training specializes in helping the newest member of your family get settled in. I've trained my own dogs since childhood.

I have worked with shelter dogs for over fifteen years, and homeless dogs are my passion. I have a BA in Biological Sciences from the University of California, Santa Barbara and embrace a scientific, humane, positive, modern approach to dog training. I rely on my own intuition and experience with dogs, and use lots of treats! I am certified by the Certification Council of Professional Dog Trainers

, which entails passing a 250 question, standardized test, 300 hours of professional dog training, and endorsements by a veterinarian, fellow dog trainer, and a client. I am a graduate of the Animal Behavior College for formal dog training, am a member of the Association of Profession Dog Trainers. I constantly attend seminars on dog training and behavior to keep abreast of the most modern, positive techniques. I have a lovely pack of four rescue dogs of my own. Nothing makes me happier than when a deserving dog finds a great forever home. I love visiting dogs in their new homes, and helping the owner learn to communicate with them and teach them how to become a good family member. I am retired from professional dog training but like to dispense free advice on dog training websites, or helping dogs and their owners that come into my orbit. I also enjoy training my own big goofy dogs.

WATER BOWLS: who says you just need one? For my three dogs, I have:
2 in the kitchen
2 in the living room
1 in the bathroom
2 outside
1 in the garage
I hate to see an empty water bowl and feel guilty when I do.

One of my dogs doesn’t like zucchini. But I’m trying to stretch the ground turkey that I use for their homemade wet food. I added carrots, celery, zucchini, potatoes, and kale to the turkey and white rice in the Instant Pot. And HA! I used an immersion blender to hide all the veggies!

A cheap fun thing to do on a rainy or boring afternoon.
Do your dogs like to rip up things? I save toilet paper rolls and put some treats in them, hide them, and let the dogs find them and rip them up and eat the treats.

If you teach simple commands like “hold it”, “Stay” and “hands” (which means putting their front paws on something) there is no end to the fun you can have with your pup!

Currently I have two dogs: I usually like having 3 or 4. However, having only two is kinda fun.

What can you do when you can’t take your dog for a walk outside for exercise?
Maybe it’s snowing or raining too hard
Maybe you broke your leg
Maybe you’re in mandatory quarantine
Maybe you just don't feel like walking them outside...
I found this video on YouTube by McCann dog training to help exercise your dogs inside. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fitwsaFZqHA&t=11s

Remember this old high school cheer? “Shake it to the left, shake it to the right, stand up, sit down, fight fight fight!” Easy, fun way to string their cues together.

I experimented making tuna treats for my dogs. I opened a can of tuna, plopped it in a bowl, added a little water and used an immersion blender to make a paste. I then mixed in a cup of flour and an egg. I put it on parchment paper on two cookie sheets. For half the batch, I pressed it like a sheet of leather, and the other half like small drop cookies. They’re moist, soft and stinky and break without crumbling. My dogs loved them! I practiced loose leash walking and used these as the training reward—My dog never did so well!

A few pieces of kibble in an empty oat container giving this 1 year old a few minutes of inexpensive entertainment

I like to add a tablespoon or two of homemade food to my dogs’ kibble at night. I use either ground turkey or pork, cooked in the Instant Pot. My dogs digest it well, and are happy when meal time rolls around. The AKC says unsalted pork is fine for dogs in small quantities.

I put some kibble and dog treats into a toilet paper roll and folded in the sides. Also into this little cardboard box that some supplements came in. Fun little food toy for them. My dogs shred up the cardboard and don’t eat it after releasing the treats. Take it away if your dogs do!

This is a helpful trick to teach. Tony will bring me things on command and put them in my hand. I can send him into a big crate to bring a bowl or Kong’s out, without having to crawl in there myself! He can also bring food bowls at feeding time. 😃

Someone recently said they were tired all the time because they had two young dogs that didn’t let him sleep. I’ve always had rambunctious dogs, and these tips keep me sane and rested. If we’re tired all the time, we can’t enjoy our dogs, right? In my current pack, I have three dogs: two shepherds and a very energetic pitbull. I’ve always had at least three dogs, because I like a Pack. Three are as easy as one, if you know how to manage them.
1) I bought a crate in my bedroom for my youngest pup. He took to it just fine and couldn’t rabble rouse the others. The older ones sleep on dog pillows in my room. 2) I have a coke can with quarters in it on my bed, so if they jump on the bed and try to play on my prone body, I just shake it once or twice. It’s the only time I use it, because 130 pounds of dog on your head and face can be dangerous. Since I rarely use it, they respect it. 3) I have 3 crates in the den where I spend most of my time. They all chill when I’m doing yoga or need them contained. (E.g. I’m on a Zoom call, the Gardner is here, or an elderly person is visiting me) They all love their crates because they learned it is a positive experience to be in them, with treats like bully sticks, greenies, and Kongs, or even their dinner. 4) Once in a while I’ll take them to doggie daycare for the day so they can play their little hearts out and come home tired. 4) I like short getaways and have a Dogsitter stay with them. She’s awesome and takes them hiking and even skateboards with them. It’s nice to sleep in with no dogs! Or, I take them to a boarding facility where they’re cage free, except to sleep. I think it’s good to have these options so we don’t feel tied down by our pets. Plus being apart makes us miss them! 5) I sometimes crawl back into bed after I let them out to potty in the early morning, because I just don’t want to start the day yet. Believe it or not, they’ve learned to chill while I get a few extra winks. The Coke can helps them know Mom is tired and they need to chill a bit. They usually fall back to sleep themselves. We need to take care of ourselves and be well rested, so we can better take care of our pups, and enjoy them fully.

I’m making fresh dog food in my Instant Pot, using 3/4 lb of frozen turkey, 1/3 c of brown rice, 1 sweet unpeeled sweet potato cut in chunks, and handful of frozen green beans. I’m going to cover it with 2 qt homemade veggie broth (can use water) and pressure cook for 20 minutes. I mix a couple of tablespoons of this mixture with their dry kibble. It keeps in the fridge in Tupperware and my three pups love it! People can eat it too.
