Meet December's Patient of the Month, Soni! 🐶
This handsome pup was rushed to our emergency hospital on December 12th with concerning symptoms like pale gums, lethargy, and loss of appetite. Initial bloodwork showed Soni had a very low number of platelets and red blood cells (anemia). Our internal medicine specialist, Dr. Ellen Heinrich, diagnosed Soni with immune-mediated thrombocytopenia (ITP), a condition where his immune system was attacking his body's own platelets and destroying them. Since platelets help clot the blood and stop bleeding, Soni had developed secondary anemia (low number of red blood cells) that was making him feel unwell. Soni required an emergency blood transfusion to stabilize him through the night.

Over the next few days, our internal medicine team treated Soni with several different medications and our ICU nurses provided round-the-clock care, to raise Soni's platelet numbers and stop secondary bleeding. Although he still faces a long journey ahead, Soni has shown steady improvement thanks to the diligent care of Dr. Heinrich and her team.

Soni greets every team member with a grateful snuggle; throughout his stay, we grew quite an attachment to this sweet guy, making him the perfect Patient of the Month! Our team is proud to have cared for Soni, and we are beyond happy he could return home and continue cuddling with his mom and little sister, Mugsy, spying on fellow neighborhood pets, sunbathing, and car riding! 🐾

11/30/2023

Our is Mr. Oatmeal, a 7-year-old kitty 🐱 who presented to our Mission hospital when his owners noticed he had not urinated and was straining to do so. ER veterinarian Dr. Austin Whitmon diagnosed sweet Oatmeal with an acute urinary obstruction. Oatmeal has a prior history of urinary issues and urinary obstruction, which is common amongst male kitties.

On exam, Oatmeal was bright and alert but uncomfortable. A urinary catheter was placed to relieve the obstruction, draining a large amount of urine. He was hospitalized for monitoring and remained stable overnight with the urinary catheter in place. He received pain medication and a urinary-focused diet. The next day, the catheter was removed, and Oatmeal was able to urinate small amounts on his own. He was discharged later that day.

The team recommended transitioning Oatmeal to a urinary-focused diet for aftercare to help dissolve struvite crystals and prevent recurrence. Increased water intake and frequent litter box cleaning were also advised. If obstruction recurs, a surgery called perineal urethrostomy may be considered to enlarge the urethra and prevent future blockages. With close monitoring and dietary management, the outlook for Oatmeal is good. However, urinary obstructions must be treated promptly, as a blocked cat can quickly become ill. Our ICU team worked hard and provided Oatmeal with the necessary care to unblock and get him home quickly.

We are so happy that sweet Oatmeal recovered and went home to his family without surgical intervention! He was such an easy choice for November’s patient of the month as he greeted our team members with happy purrs and hugs throughout his stay with us. We ❤️ you, Mr. Oatmeal!

A note on UO: Urinary obstructions are unfortunately common in male cats, with some studies estimating that over 50% of cats can develop this dangerous condition in their lifetime. This occurs when crystals or stones form in the urine and get lodged in the narrow urethra, completely blocking the urine flow. The most common crystal type is struvite, which forms in alkaline urine.
Early signs of a potential urinary obstruction include straining to urinate, frequent trips to the litter box, crying out or vocalizing while trying to urinate, blood in the urine, and excessive licking of the ge***al area. Cats will stop producing urine entirely as the obstruction progresses, a medical emergency. They may act lethargic, vomit, and show signs of discomfort or pain.

⚠️PET PARENTS⚠️
In recent weeks, there has been a nationwide uptick in cases of an ongoing canine respiratory illness.
The cause is still unknown, but this illness spreads quickly between dogs (airborne) and is not consistently responding to standard treatment. The illness is not thought to be zoonotic (spread between humans and pets).
Signs include coughing, difficulty breathing, and lethargy. We advise keeping dogs away from shared public spaces like dog parks and pet stores for now. Please contact your vet if your dog develops respiratory signs for evaluation and guidance on precautions. We will provide updates as more information becomes available on this illness. In the meantime, extra vigilance can help protect our pets.

Please share this post to help spread the word to our pet-loving community. 🐶

We want to thank veterinary radiologist Dr. Courtney Wait for providing our team with TFAST/AFAST and ultrasound training last Friday! 😻

Being able to perform quick thoracic and abdominal ultrasound exams (TFAST/AFAST) allows our veterinarians to rapidly evaluate animals for potentially life-threatening conditions like pneumothorax, hemothorax, or abdominal bleeding. This can help guide emergency treatment. Our team looks forward to utilizing this essential skill set in future cases!

Special shout out to Brody and Cash for taking time out of their busy days to be our ultrasound test doggies! 🐶

Today's follows Izzy Askew. A 3-year-old Pomeranian who has been under the care of our Emergency and Internal Medicine services for a serious condition called “Acquired Fanconi Syndrome” which has been associated with the consumption of jerky pet treats. Jerky-induced Fanconi syndrome occurs when the proximal renal tubules of the kidneys malfunction, resulting in inappropriate loss of important body nutrients (such as glucose, bicarbonate, electrolytes, and amino acids). This leads to excessive urination and thirst, as well as weakness caused by dehydration and severe electrolyte imbalances. Izzy’s condition was critical and required urgent hospitalization.

During her long hospitalization period at MVES, Izzy received careful IV fluid therapy with frequent monitoring of her blood levels, as well as needed nutritional support. About a week after her initial diagnosis, Izzy seems to be responding well to treatment and is back to her sassy self!

Thank you to Izzy's wonderful family for trusting us with her care and our amazing veterinary team for their diligence and compassion. Izzy will require ongoing monitoring and care, but her prognosis is good thanks to her intensive supportive treatment after her diagnosis. We love seeing patients like Izzy recover and can't wait for her next recheck!

Meet Deacon, our Patient of the Month for October!🐶
This handsome 1.5-year-old Bloodhound was initially presented to our Cardiologist Dr. Shane Murphy, in 2022, after his primary veterinarian discovered a heart murmur. The cardio team performed an echocardiogram, which revealed moderate conge***al aortic stenosis (conge***al heart disease), meaning the valve separating Deacon's left ventricle from the aorta was narrowed from birth. This makes blood flow from the heart to the body harder.❤️‍🩹

Dr. Murphy diagnosed the condition as moderate severity. While long-term issues like congestive heart failure are possible, Deacon has shown no concerning clinical signs so far. His appetite, energy levels, and breathing have all been normal at home.
After discussing options with Deacon's owners, we decided the best course was close monitoring for now rather than medications or invasive procedures. We recommended an annual recheck to keep an eye on it.

Deacon returned this month for his first recheck. We were so happy to hear he remains happy and active! A follow-up echo showed no worsening of the stenosis or changes in heart size and function. Dr. Murphy advised continuing to monitor for new symptoms but again chose to hold off on treatments. Deacon is as sweet as it gets and the team was eager to see him and give him some lovin! 🐾

10/23/2023

Today's case follows our friend Mossimo (or “Mossi”), a 14-year-old Yorkie who has been under the care of Dr. Ana Costa and our Internal Medicine team after a severe bout of pancreatitis. 🐾

Mossi first presented with vomiting, diarrhea, and abdominal discomfort to our Emergency service at MVES, where he was diagnosed with severe pancreatitis with the help of an abdominal ultrasound. Mossi was hospitalized for supportive care (IV fluids, stomach protectants, and anti-nausea medication) and advanced nutritional support by placing a nasogastric feeding tube. Cases of severe pancreatitis can also be incredibly painful - Mossi was one of the first patients at our hospital to have an advanced anesthetic block (ESP block) performed by our anesthesiologist (Dr. Charlotte Marquis) to provide longer-lasting control of his pain and optimize his path to recovery. Mossi had some ups and downs through his treatment. However, he has managed to push through and has been doing well at home.

Thank you to our amazing clients for entrusting us with Mossi’s care during that difficult time. We look forward to seeing his sweet face on his next visit! 🐶
