What a huge moment for Griffyn and his Mom today! Griffyn met AND interacted with a completely novel person in this single session. This is a first since meeting me last summer so we are thrilled to see Griffyn choose to expand his inner circle, one person at a time!

Great management idea for all your counter surfing dogs! Training "go to your spot" and other alternate behaivors is still necessary but I love this idea as a way to prevent rehearsal of unwanted beahvior.

Management is something every trainer I know talks about - it’s one of the first conversations I have with clients. Baby gates, x-pens, leash tethers, the list goes on…

I’ve always thought I was good at finding adaptive solutions but today I walked into a lesson and was blown away by the genius of my client! Their dog is a big boy who loves to counter surf, but also struggles with being confined.

Look at this beautiful AND creative solution they came up with! This is a portable ping pong net 🤯 I am so in love with this and was so impressed with their ingenious idea.

You can find them on Amazon - get one while you can because I think this is gonna be a new trend 😂

Lefty is rocking his working walks with his family! Sometimes small changes can have a big impact on increasing overall confidence (and as a result, fewer behavior concerns). Here we switched up some walking equipment, worked on leash handling skills and fine tuned some timing/mechanics and Lefty has made huge improvements. We still have work to do but I’m thrilled to hear things are trending in the right direction!

She did it! Animal Wonders goes above and beyond to help all of their animals thrive and I have been honored to be able to learn alongside Gaia this year. Please consider contributing to Animal Wonders Inc. & Gaia's medical fund for your year end donations AND subscribe to their YouTube page for incredible educational content. Next up for me, I'm looking to train a voluntary pick-up with Gaia and I've got my eye on Atlas, a gray fox who has so much to share with community members - but he needs to be comfortable wearing a collar and a leash first!

Very interesting article on the dog-human relationship, and what is hopefully a shift towards understanding dogs a bit more for who they are and not who we want them to be. "In this setting, dogs can be themselves, and humans re-learn a balanced and natural way to interact with dogs."

Woohoo! It’s squeeze tube season! A client asked today how to reward all her dog’s great behavior in this cold weather…squeeze tubes! I tend to stick to simple recipes in squeeze tubes but there are a million options to accommodate any diet plan or allergies. These camping tubes are my favorite because they are so easy to fill and the dispensing hole is large. However, travel shampoo bottles and baby food tubes also work well for thinner, watered down type food (not straight canned food). Here’s to warmer hands while training! 👏🥶

Griffyn LOVES his toys so of course his mom has worked very hard at finding ways to help him carry toys while wearing his new The Muzzle Movement muzzle. He’s a quick study but his mom has also done an incredible job of going at his pace and keeping muzzle time fun, light, random and just “part of the landscape”. Thanks Daisy at Hello Bully for that line! I love that Griffyn’s mom is so willing to get so creative and keep working to find the best setups, reinforcers and plans for him!

We started with a knockoff basket muzzle and cut the front out so he could carry his beloved ball. 🧡 Finding just the right fabric and textures for holding a toy through his full muzzle is still in development but we are getting there! Of course we are also working with food and other standard reinforcers but it seems silly to NOT use G’s favorite things to help with such an important and sometimes tricky exercise as muzzle acclimation!

So proud of this little creature for rocking her practice ultrasound at Animal Blessings Pet Hospital! If you can’t tell by the audio in the video, Gaia has quickly become one of my favorite animals to work with at Animal Wonders Inc.! 💗 I’m sure she recognizes my voice and she is so smart (of course I forgot my clicker this session 🤣) Training different species has been so beneficial for my mechanics and all of the things we may take for granted when working with a domesticated animal. Huge props to all the zoo and wildlife trainers out there!

Practicing hopping “up” and “off” in the forest is a great way for Sun to practice her “go where I point” skills! She seems to love this game and it’s great to practice when I don’t really need her to do anything in particular. Then when I do need to put her harness on or have her hop off of the sofa, we are still playing a game that’s fun and rewarding for her!

Helper dogs for the win, again! Pittie mix Tana has become much more confident overall since we started working together, but her hilarious helper dog, Bricker, has really helped her with her neighborhood walks and when getting to know new people. I love this silly pair and seeing Tana’s progress every week!

Sweet Ozzie was so much fun to work with these last couple of months! She’s one smart girl and she and her family have made so much progress together. After a 6 week package we now have plans in place for strangers coming to her home, meeting those strangers, walking without chasing things that move and making some great choices along the way! By slowing down and focusing on Ozzie’s body language during a recent walk, we even observed her deliberately move away from a family pushing a stroller. Moving away is an awesome choice when something causes a dog stress, and it’s been wonderful to see her family support and embrace these decisions!

The best single thing you can do to help a dog who is afraid of fireworks is to see your veterinarian. Do it now, before the noisy holidays arrive.

Capturing and shaping behavior is not easy but Kira and her Dad work beautifully together here! Waiting is SO hard sometimes but it will pay off when this family is busy with their new baby and the dogs are able to lie down and relax in their own - in one of a couple designated locations not on Mom’s lap or hovering over the baby 😊

This family rocked their “getting ready for baby” training plan! The dogs can be sensitive to change but with a structured plan and by allowing enough time to proceed at the dogs pace, they made so much progress! Desensitizing to a stroller and both parents holding a doll, learning to relax on a mat and also being able to relax alone in their safe space were just a handful of areas where both dogs excelled. I have no doubt this family will be as ready as they can be when they welcome their new family member this summer 💗

Sunny learned how to use her scratching board in record time! There are more steps not included here but I’ve been told by non-behavior peeps that too many steps = boring! 🤣 Happy scratching!!

Sniffy walks have been Georgia’s favorite activity this winter. Taking it indoors to pet stores (yes, our Petco really was this messy!) or setting up a sniffari/kibble hunt in the house has been so fun for her!

So proud of Tess and her very compassionate and supportive mama! Tess already had some nice foundation behaviors established, but she was still nervous and exhibiting distance increasing behavior towards stranger dogs and people. By backing up a bit, working at a level that Tess could handle, focusing on the details (dogs see it ALL!) and allowing her to opt out, she has made some real progress! I’m excited to see this adventure dog in 6 months and see what insights her travels reveal. Congrats Tess and Mom for learning how to navigate this very complicated modern world!

If you know me, you know I love helper dogs! For the highly fearfuls, for the undersocialized and also for the reactive dogs that just don’t know they have other options. One of my clients ended up (unknowingly) with an extremely fearful pup, Oreo, and while we have made some nice progress (utilizing baby steps, behavior medication and chicken 😊) it has been slow. Enter newly adopted helper dog, Mia, from Thompson River Animal Care Shelter. Oreo is a different dog with Mia around- he’s playful, gets on the sofa with his people and now allows much more petting and interaction. While we still have a ways to go, Mia has proven to be the gentle push Oreo needed to bond with his family and become the pet they had been hoping for. Fear-free pet behavior help

Blue Sky Behavior focuses on training and behavior modification utilizing science based methods that focus on reducing stress and anxiety for your pets. Training does not need to be forceful, and there is always a way to help our pets without using harsh equipment or methods. I know that hiring a trainer for your pets is a big decision, and you should always feel 100% comfortable with training methods, treatment plans and any other process or equipment used. Training should always be enjoyable for both pets and people and at Blue Sky Behavior, your pets will never be put into a position that causes extreme fear, anxiety or stress. To tell you a little about me, I have been helping pets and people as a Certified Professional Dog Trainer since 2009, and have recently become Certified as a Fear Free Professional Trainer. While I specialize in working with fearful pets from cruelty and neglect situations, I have been offering private training for pets exhibiting behaviors like reactivity, aggression, anxiety and hyper arousal for over a decade. Please contact me if you have any questions about your pets, how to help them or how to get started. Pet training and behavior is an unregulated industry and it can be difficult to wade through the endless number of opinions online on how to train or modify a pet’s behavior. I am always happy to help you figure out the best place to start and how to keep training effective and enjoyable!
