The City of Mobile Animal Services gave us a buzz to let us know they had an ARF dog. Clyde was adopted from ARF in 2016. He was brought in as a stray on Friday. Of course he’s microchipped which is how the shelter knew he came from ARF but the owner has a full voicemail and hasn’t responded to a text.

We couldn’t let him stay up at the shelter so he’s happily lounging in a foster home while we continue the search for his family!

Apollo Creed is back in his overnight foster home. His prognosis is guarded. Severe malnutrition can be difficult to reverse and the progress can be so slow.

The malnutrition can cause many many many other issues such as organ failure, anemia, vitamin deficiency, etc. that the veterinary team has to identify and monitor. We are so thankful for all your donations so that the veterinary team can do the diagnostics necessary to continue guiding his care.

Keep this sweet boy in your thoughts. He certainly has a village and we are so thankful for that!

“What kind of dog is that?” is always echoing through the halls of a shelter full of mixed breeds. Genetics are a funny thing and looks can be deceiving!

In the market for a new pet? We suggest you start with the list of personality traits you’re looking for in a dog and ask the shelter staff who fits into your lifestyle. Do you want a running companion? Or do you need a couch potato?

Meet these two mixed-breed dogs with a similar percentage of American Pit Bull Terrier in their DNA. Despite their diverse appearances, they share over 50% of their genetic background, showcasing the complexity of breed labels. Studies on DNA variations in mixed-breed dogs have revealed substantial genetic diversity and differentiation among populations, challenging the simplistic approach of visual breed identification. Let's rethink how we label and perceive dogs based on appearance alone. Link in caption

Part of ARF’s mission is to help keep pets with their families. Today, Animal Control made us aware of a dog who was shot in the face, in his own yard, by a random stranger. The family was understandably distraught and needed help getting this pup the care he needed. ARF stepped in to help, which means this beloved pet gets sutures, pain meds, and antibiotics today and then gets to return home with his owners to recover. We strive to help our community and are proud to work closely with local municipal shelters and other organizations to provide a safety net for situations like this. Through your generous support, we can help other pets in our community too.

(Picture in previous post is covered if you want to see. The donation link isn’t working so we are reposting without the photo. Thanks for your support!)

Rescue isn’t always easy. We wanted to share with you the passing of sweet Norman.

Norman was brought to The City of Mobile Animal Services in very rough shape. He was very old, blind and in need of eye surgery to remove his eyes. ARF immediately agreed to sponsor his care and one of our long time board members agreed to foster. Surgery on a very senior dog is risky so we needed to help assess his health and quality of life to determine the options.

Norman enjoyed time in a foster home getting attention from his own little boy and making friends with another blind dog Thelma, a former ARFan. He enjoyed enrichment activities like his snuffle mat and he got to enjoy a doggy ice cream party.

Despite all the love and awesome veterinary care, today we let Norman cross the rainbow bridge as it became apparent that his overall health was just too poor.

Given his guarded prognosis we hadn’t yet shared him with our supporters yet! Although we hate to lead with sad news he was a cool little dog that deserves to be remembered.

Thanks to all our supporters who make this work possible. We are thankful we can be there to give little old senior dogs the love and care they deserve, even when it’s a few short weeks.

Want to help? Your donations will be used to sponsor more pups in need at shelter. Or sign up to foster at dog at the city shelter.

Queenie is an older girl who came to the The City of Mobile Animal Services with a huge mammary tumor. Although the tumor was removed, it's cancerous. We are sponsoring her medical care so she can live out her days -- however long that may be -- in a loving hospice foster home. She'll get to be spoiled and enjoy a cozy home while she still feels well. And when it's time, she'll be surrounded by love. Please help us continue to help dogs like Queenie get the care they deserve. We appreciate your support!

‼️Long term foster or adopter needed! ‼️About a year agond a half ago, a long time volunteer passed away. Kali was on of his dogs. Another awesomeome volunteer has been fostering her but she’s in the military and not able to continue due upcoming deployments.

From her foster: She’s an 11 year old and just wants to be a couch potato...I mean blue heeler 🐕 She's really a perfect dog. She's happy as long as she's next to her human.

I've had her for a little over a year, I've never had to crate her. She's a low energy, senior girl who just wants to stop and sniff the roses. No long walks needed, but she'll keep up if she thinks you'll leave her behind! She's really gentle with humans of every age. She came from an elderly couple that obviously loved her dearly. She doesn't pull on a leash. Shes been around children and has never shown any aggression. She is perfect around cats and doesn't chase chickens either.

She is slow on approving of other dogs, the more energy the slower the approval process. But she has proven it's possible. She now even likes the neighbor's malinois puppy. Overall, she just wants all other dogs to leave her alone.

I'm in the military and I don't have the support here to keep fostering her through my upcoming deployments.

❤️❤️ Your donations at work ❤️❤️

We regularly ask the The City of Mobile Animal Services what animals need extra TLC to find their forever homes. Marine has two torn ACL’s!

Of course, we said yes because the generous donations from our amazing ARF community allow us to help shelter pets!

But that’s half the battle. Marine needed a foster home so super volunteer Martin Miller and the city staff sprang into action! In less than 24 hours a foster had been found!! Even better news - they’re going to adopt afterwards!!!!

A huge thanks to Marine’s new family! After 205 days at the shelter and a lot of teamwork, Marine will get the care he needs and a forever home.

Want to be part of more happy tails? We are a non-profit who relies on your donations to make this happen so pleaee consider supporting our cause. And share to help us spread the word!
