Our volunteers today were a big help, but we still have crates that need to be assembled. If you can help, please come Tuesday or Wednesday so we'll have everything ready for our Thursday transport. Thank you!!

CRATE ASSEMBLY VOLUNTEERS NEEDED!
We have another transport on Thursday, January 30th. We use 50+ crates per transport, and we need people to come and assemble crates so they are ready to go! Come anytime we are open, and we will put you to work. It's not a hard job but it is an important one. No tools! Just a lot of zip ties. (Hours/days we are open posted on our main page.) Great way to collect volunteer/service hours. THANK YOU!

The rain stopped just in time for us to load 60+ dogs and puppies on a plane headed north to Brandywine Valley SPCA in Pennsylvania. Thank you to our great volunteers and staff for your help getting all these wonderful dogs crated and loaded in the wee hours and of course to the ASPCA for putting everything together. Along with all of the Mobile SPCA puppies and dogs, we were able to help dogs from The City of Mobile Animal Services, Mobile County Animal Shelter, City Of Prichard Animal Shelter, and The Pretty Pittie Committee. Another successful transport along with our wishes that every single doggie finds the best ever home!

By now everyone knows that the temperatures will be dropping into the teens and twenties in the next few days. With weather like this approaching, it is more important than ever to assure not only that our pets are kept safely inside and out of the dangerous temperatures, but to guarantee that should the worst happen and they get lost outside, they have the best chance to be returned to you.

Obviously, all dogs and cats should be microchipped. This is the only real proof that a found animal belongs to you. If your lost pet is lucky enough to end up in a municipal shelter they will immediately be scanned and your family can be reunited. But if found by someone else who doesn't think to or is able to scan for a microchip, or worse - wants to keep your pet for their own - suddenly the chances of ever seeing them again plummets. And always make sure the microchip contact information is current! A chip without current owner info is useless.

Pets should always wear a collar with phone number written on it, or a tag with contact information that cannot fall off or get lost. If your pet has just been bathed, put their collar back on immediately. If you're worried your cat will get his collar caught on something, use a breakaway collar. An animal lost but wearing a collar is a sign that he very likely has a home and some people who might ordinarily ignore a "stray" will try harder to help if they know an animal is a pet.

Imagine your indoor pet who suddenly finds himself outdoors with no idea where he is. Now add to that dangerous weather. Dogs and cats are clever, but sometimes nature is a harsh teacher and we don't want our beloved pets to be taught a lesson they're unprepared to learn. This means with the weather we're about to have it's more important than ever to assure that they don't try to dart out open doors, that our children and visitors understand the importance of home security, that our dogs are always leashed when taken out for potty breaks. And of course just like in good weather, no pet should be left outside unattended at any time. The dangers, aside from getting lost, are simply too many to mention.

We want our family - dogs and cats included - to be here with us when the weather breaks. And should you see pets outside when it's not safe, be kind to them. Help them if you're able, take care of them inside until the weather clears if you can. Contact our municipal shelter to help, and of course post on our MSPCA Lost/Found Pets page so that by sharing, all of us can try to reunite a family.

DOGS IN COLD WEATHER! It's that time of year when we will start seeing pets left outside when it's dangerously cold. Frequently, caring people will reach out to the Mobile SPCA for help. This is a reminder that only the POLICE and ANIMAL CONTROL at the municipal shelter that serves the area where the animal is located have the legal authority to investigate such reports. Without the involvement of law enforcement, the Mobile SPCA cannot assist on private property so as much as we would like to help, we simply cannot be your first contact for help.

THE LAW: Outside pets MUST have access to water, food and shelter. "Adequate shelter" to one person is a far cry from what it is to another. But until such time as our laws are changed for the better, that's what we must work with.

THIS IS WHAT YOU SHOULD DO:
Depending on the animal's location, call 311 or google the number for the municipal shelter in the area where the pet is located. If the shelter is closed, contact the police department to report or ask for guidance. If you take these steps but you know that no one responded, please call again. While reports should always be generated, occasionally things fall through the cracks so it's important to know that the situation will be addressed as time and personnel allow.

NOTE: While the situation may be frustrating, please remember to be polite to authorities when you speak to them. They are after all on our side and want to help not only us but the animals. Also understand that there are only a small number of Animal Control Officers working HUNDREDS of cases of neglect and abuse. It's not fair to blame our municipal shelters when they are understaffed but doing the best they can.

Sometimes you may feel that no one showed up but that may not be the case. Just because you didn't see AC or the police at your neighbor's house does not mean they weren't there. It's possible they investigated but found no cause. Unfortunately, we must all work within the confines of the law. Simply because we believe an animal is being neglected or abused does not mean it is an enforceable offense.

If you have contacted the proper authorities but you feel confident they have not responded to your request, THEN please send a private message to our FB page with the following information:
When you called (date and time), who you spoke to (name), and the address of the animal you think is in peril. If you can safely take a photo or get a video supporting what you believe to be neglect or abuse, include that as well because that is VERY HELPFUL. Our staff will then contact the people to whom you spoke, provide them with any additional information you may have (including photos/videos), attempt to follow up with them, and relay whatever information we receive back to you.

But it all starts with YOU! Contact the proper authorities, follow up with them until you believe they have responded, get proof if possible, and then contact us if the dog is still in danger.

Thank you for always speaking up for those innocent creatures who have no voice to protect themselves.

In January of 2024, we had a transport to MSPCA-Angell in Boston and these two little cuties flew there together. Their names were Hazelnut and Donut. Both were adopted, but to different families. Sadly, Donut was then returned to the rescue because her adopter had a medical emergency. But in a stroke of luck - or serendipity? - the family who adopted Hazelnut just happened to see Donut's photo online and thought that their sweet adopted dog looked like Donut's sibling. So they went to the shelter and confirmed it was true! They adopted Donut that same day and the two have been inseparable ever since. Sometimes things just work out the way they were supposed to and we think this was one of those times. Look at these two together and tell us what you think.

A HUGE SHOUT OUT TO Buffalo Rock Company with a thank you to such great volunteers! Buffalo Rock Pepsi came out today and assembled kennels for transport, hauled rocks to fill low spots in the parking lot, washed bowls, sorted clothes, crushed cans and opened newspapers! UPDATE ON CAMERON SEELY from Shon Pettis! "Just wanted to give you all an update. I adopted my precious cat which was named Cameron Seely over 6 years ago from the PetSmart on Airport. I kept her name because Cameron is my middle name. She is the most precious cat that I’ve ever had. She has brought me endless joy. I’m a huge cat lover, & have had cats my entire life. She was so healthy & extremely sweet, & still is. Thank you so much for providing me such a wonderful baby. I pray I can have many more years with her. I have 3 others as well. She’s best friends with my snowshoe Siamese Bella. At the time I had adopted her, I had just gotten Bella, & wasn’t sure how she was going to adapt to a new kitten. She immediately loved her. Cameron had a tortoiseshell sister, but I don’t remember her name. It broke my heart to have to leave her sister. After I got home, I saw how great Cameron & Bella got along, so about a week later, I drove back to Petsmart to see if Cameron’s sister was still there. If she was, I was going to adopt her too. Unfortunately she had already been adopted. I think ofher often, & pray she has a wonderful home. I just recently found you all’s page, & wanted to reach out. Thanks again for what you all do, & for providing me such a precious girl. She has a very pampered & spoiled life." PetSmart Charities
