Introducing your dog to brushing their teeth begins with leaving their dental care items out for a day to familiarize your pet with them. Your pup can investigate the items and become more comfortable with them. You can even use treats to help your dog form a positive association with teeth brushing essentials.

Summers can get hot and caring for your dog properly in the heat makes all the difference. People sweat when they are hot, but dogs keep themselves cool through panting and sweat through their paw pads. If you see your pup lying down excessively or if they have their tongue fully out in the shape of a spade, these are signs that your dog might be overheated. Make sure they are hydrated, try using a cooling vest, and find shaded areas as much as possible. Remember to keep your doggy healthy by seeing us for regular wellness visits by giving us a call at 251-661-6189.

Panting is normal to an extent, but it is important to be mindful of what signs to look out for when it is unhealthy. If your doggy is breathing more loudly and raspier than usual, making a ton of effort to breathe, panting straight for 20 minutes or more, or appearing stressed, there may be underlying issues. Schedule a visit to our veterinary clinic by contacting us at 251-661-6189.

A study of dog DNA has shown that our "best friend" in the animal world may also be our oldest one. Dogs are thought to have evolved from wolves that ventured into human camps, perhaps sniffing around for food. As they were tamed, they could then have served humans as hunting companions or guards.

Play can help boost your pet’s mood, prevent boredom, and relieve pet stress. It can be difficult to schedule enough activity with your pet if all the humans in your household work full time, but even small amounts of playtime can have a positive impact on your pet’s mood and quality of life. Another bonus? As a pet parent, you get serious mental health benefits, too! Just a short play period with your furry friend can get those endorphins flowing and help turn your mood around.

12/05/2023

Here's a fun fact! The secret of a dog’s night vision that allows them to see better than humans in low light situations is a large number of light-sensitive rods found in the retina that collect light. The dog’s rod-dominant retina collects this light and using a thin tissue behind the retina called the tapetum lucidum amplifies and reflects the light back to the camera-like lens, which focuses on what the dog is looking at. We know it's a little scary with all the news of the new canine upper respiratory virus spreading around. So here are a few tips to help keep your canine babies safe!

*Keep your pets up to date on necessary vaccines - Bordatella, Canine Influenza, and Parainfluenza.

*Reduce contact with large numbers of other dogs (the less exposure, the less risk)

*Reduce contact with sick dogs or dogs with symptoms (Coughing, sneezing, runny nose or eyes)

*Keep your symptomatic pets at home and contact your veterinarian for care!

*Avoid communal food or water bowls shared by multiple dogs.

As always if you need us for anything do not hesitate to reach out! We are here for you and your babies!
