We are still in the midst of baby bird season with nearly 40 songbirds currently in care in our Wildlife Medical Clinic. One of these patients is this nestling Northern Cardinal!

This photo was taken just after one of many daily feedings and you can see that this bird's crop is full of nutritious food. A birds crop allows them to store food to be digested at a later time. This proves helpful when food resources are scarce or birds simply want to store food for later use.

Have you found a baby bird displaced from a nest? It is perfectly okay to return baby birds to nests as long as they are not in need of additional care. If a nest is destroyed or simply nowhere to be found, we can accept babies for care! Don't forget that we have a hotline staffed 9-5 daily to talk you through any and all rescue scenarios.

In the meantime, you can also spend some time familiarizing yourself with helpful tips for wildlife rescue here: https://www.thecenterforwildlife.org/tipsforrescue

They are so much better than us

A man finds a goose that was shaking with cold stuck to a pole in Montana. As he got closer he realized, wrapped up in her wings, was a tiny puppy she was shielding from the freezing temperatures. We have so much to learn from the animals. Beautiful. (Both the goose and the puppy have recovered, were adopted together, and are doing well.)

As Ines Ritter watched her mustang Reno kick up his heels and run off, she got up from the arena dirt, dusted herself off and wondered what she’d gotten herself into. The petite 5’3” Ritter was an accomplished rider, having grown up vaulting...

Talent, athleticism, longevity, heart, & a teaching spirit—that’s what these two veteran dressage schoolmasters have in common. These worth-their-weight-in-gold geldings have partnered with multiple riders, helping them earn the scores required for various USDF Rider Performance Awards and USDF rider medals and freestyle bars. Turns out, not only does it take special horses like these two unicorns to make dreams come true; it also takes special owners. Read their story: https://yourdressage.org/2021/05/18/dynamic-duo/

The shoulder-in. It may look simple, but it can be one of the most difficult movements to teach to students of dressage. The movement may be clear in your mind when you read about it, and it looks so easy when someone performs it correctly, but when you try to ride it yourself, you run into multiple problems. Your body balks at what it should be doing, and your horse hollows, slows down, does more of a leg-yield or has too much angle, overbends his neck, or does any number of other things that are not correct.

In this exclusive, multiple time Adequan®/USDF Breeder award recipient Maurine “Mo” Swanson shares the secrets of this movement, complete with helpful diagrams: https://yourdressage.org/2021/04/13/a-way-to-learn-how-to-ride-shoulder-in/
