✨ Farrier Meeting Recap ✨

Last week, we had the pleasure of working through two fascinating cases during our Farrier Meeting, paired with some delicious home cooking by our amazing office manager!

🔎 Case Highlights:
• Diagnosis of sesamoiditis and a suspensory branch core lesion.
• Treatment of a poorly tolerated foot abscess, which, thanks to a nerve block, allowed the mare to bear weight on the affected limb and start draining the abscess effectively.

For everyone who enjoyed meeting this sweet mare during the event, here’s a post-treatment video—she’s feeling so much better! 🐴✨

We’re grateful for the opportunity to help so many horses and learn together at these events.

📆 See you next year at our upcoming Farrier Meetings!

📢 Have you heard of Sweeney in horses? 🐴

Sweeney, or suprascapular neuropathy, is a condition that affects the suprascapular nerve in horses, leading to weakness and muscle atrophy in the shoulder. This injury can be debilitating and is often the result of trauma in the area, seriously limiting the movement and comfort of our equine friends.

At DCLAH, we’re using advanced techniques like Electro-Acupuncture to help horses recover from this condition and improve their quality of life. ⚡ Electro-Acupuncture is a powerful tool that enhances our Acupuncture Therapy by stimulating acupuncture points with electrical currents to maximize muscle relief and recovery. 💪✨

If you have a horse that might benefit from this technique or want more information about our Acupuncture Service, don’t hesitate to reach out! 📞

Flexural Deformity - Club Foot in Horses: What It Is and How We Can Help at DCLAH 🐴

Club Foot is a flexural deformity that affects the angle of the hoof, creating an upright posture that can impact your horse’s mobility and overall well-being. This condition, often caused by an imbalance between tendon and bone growth, is important to detect early to prevent further complications.

🔎 Symptoms to Watch For:
• Change in hoof shape (raised toe)
• Difficulty walking or running
• Pain or sensitivity in the affected tendon(s)

📍 Recent Case at DCLAH: In a recent Grade 2 (severe) Club Foot case, we performed a desmotomy of the inferior check ligament along with specialized podiatry management. This advanced treatment helped correct the horse’s posture, improving its comfort and ability to move normal.

Our team is committed to providing effective, high-quality treatments tailored to each unique case. Schedule a consultation with us, and let our experts take care of your horse’s health and mobility! 🐎✨

🧬 Equine Papilloma Virus: What You Need to Know 🧬

Equine Papilloma Virus is a common condition in young horses, appearing as small warts or “papillomas” on the skin, especially around the mouth and nose. Although it’s usually harmless and tends to clear up on its own, here are a few important things to know about this condition:

🔹 What causes Equine Papilloma Virus?

This virus spreads through direct contact with infected horses or contaminated surfaces and is most common in horses under 3 years old due to their developing immune systems.

🔹 Symptoms:

Papillomas appear as small, gray or light pink bumps, typically painless. They often occur in clusters and usually disappear within a few months but may need treatment if they become infected or interfere with other functions.

🔹 Treatment and Prevention:

In most cases, the warts will go away on their own. Good hygiene and limiting contact with infected horses can help reduce the risk of spread.

🔹 When to consult a veterinarian?

If the warts increase in size, change color, or cause discomfort, it’s important to seek veterinary care for appropriate treatment.

🧑‍⚕️ Geriatric Care in Horses: Focus on Metabolic Health 🧑‍⚕️

As horses age, their needs change, and it’s crucial to provide the right care to maintain their quality of life. Two common conditions in older horses are Equine Metabolic Syndrome (EMS) and Cushing’s Disease (PPID).

🔵 Equine Metabolic Syndrome (EMS):

This condition affects a horse’s ability to metabolize sugars, leading to insulin resistance and an increased risk of laminitis. Horses with EMS often require diet and management adjustments to control weight and reduce inflammation risks.

🔵 Cushing’s Disease (PPID):

Also known as PPID, this disease is caused by a pituitary gland dysfunction, leading to symptoms such as long, curly coat, muscle loss, lethargy, and increased susceptibility to infections and laminitis. Note: Proper diagnosis and management require laboratory testing, specifically ACTH measurements .

💡 How Can We Help?

At DCLAH, we offer a comprehensive approach to geriatric equine care, tailored to your horse’s specific needs. From regular check-ups to personalized management plans, we work with you to ensure your horse ages healthily and happily.

🌿 Prevention and early management are key.

If you notice changes in your horse’s behavior, weight, or energy, contact us for a complete evaluation, including the necessary lab work for accurate diagnosis!

White Line Disease in Horses: What You Need to Know 🦶

White line disease is a condition affecting the hoof wall, often caused by bacteria, fungi, or yeast invading the weakened areas of the hoof. If left untreated, it may cause significant damage to the hoof and in some cases lead to lameness. 🐴

🔎 Symptoms to Look For:

• Separation of the hoof wall
• Soft or crumbly areas near the white line
• Sensitivity during hoof care
• Lameness

🛠 Treatment:

Early detection is key! Treatment typically involves removing the affected hoof wall, applying topical antifungal/antibacterial treatments, and regular farrier care to promote healing.

📅 Prevention Tips:

• Regular farrier visits
• Keeping hooves clean and dry
• Ensuring proper nutrition

Don’t let white line disease slow your horse down. Keep an eye on those hooves and give us a call if you notice anything unusual. We are here to help! 🐎💪

Davie County Large Animal Hospital: Then & Now

Today Our state-of-the-art facility is devoted to the care of horses, providing general healthcare and emergency services with an emphasis on equine sports medicine, surgery, rehabilitation, complementary medicine and podiatry. We are lucky in our ability to care for patients both at the farm and the hospital when additional care is warranted, allowing us to offer your horse the very best.

2018 Dr. Jose Castro, a native of Ecuador and boarded Equine Surgeon and Acupuncturist purchased DCLAH in 2018. Under Dr. Castro’s leadership, the DCLAH team is proud to provide all services previously offered, in addition to expanding the medical and surgical diagnostics and therapies available at DCLAH.

2002 Due to surrounding real estate development and the addition of second and third veterinarians, the original facility was sold. The current 7000 sq. ft. facility was built and completed in January of 2002.

1993 The first Davie County Large Animal Hospital, a 5000 sq. ft. facility dedicated to the care and treatment of large animal patients was built near I-40 just off of Farmington Road directly behind what was then an Ace Hardware Store.
