Walking in the bulls! The guys have just been hanging out and minding their own business for a few months. But life is gonna change, now that it’s getting time to get ready for the bull sale. Yesterday was “Weigh and Tag” day, with ultrasound on Monday. After that, we’ve got clipping and pictures and videos as well as PAP and BSE testing. I get even busier this time of year!

A few years ago, Bill came up with the term "Phenotypically Enhanced Genomic EPD's." That basically means we put a lot of emphasis on EPD's, but we want to see them backed up with phenotypes and hard data - weights, measurements, ultrasound, and PAP scores. This list of Bulls in this year's Sale is a start to help you do the same - sort out the ones with the EPD profile that will work in your herd. And, as the ultrasound and PAP data, as well as photos and videos, become available, we will be sharing all of that as well.

We have been focusing on the pen show, but we always seem to have something we want to exhibit, which doesn’t “fit” with a pen. The red heifer is such a heifer. So, we took her and “Midget” up on the Hill. They didn’t win anything but we sure do like their types - phenotypically and genetically. (And a little down time when the day was done!)

After last night’s flyover of 5 military helicopters (low enough to vibrate the windows), the bull calves had an adventure! Luckily nothing was hurt and Bill got the corner repaired and we got them in and sorted. Now they are back in their pen and back to eating.

Weaning - Round 1. The bulls from this bunch and the ones from Round 2 are out on feed now. Steers are sold and heifers are out in the pasture waiting for the first sort. Slowly getting the fall work done!

CONCRETE, CONCRETE, CONCRETE (i.e. $$$). After 30+ years, we are finally getting a concrete floor in the barn - complete with a future bathroom and, of course, a big space - still dirt - for show cattle!! (Oh, and another feed bunk line, too!)

Moving cattle through the blooming cholla cactus is always pretty, but even better when a cool breeze picks up! (The blooms will be full force in a few weeks!)

Update - located in SE Colorado. Gelbvieh and Balancer replacement heifers for Sale. All are guaranteed open (vet checked) and Ultrasounded. Some are registered Gelbvieh and Blaancers, others are from the commercial herd. These are good heifers - the culls from the heifer crop were sold after weaning, so these remaining are pretty high quality. We just can’t keep them all!

It was a great Sale Day yesterday and we have so much to be thankful for. The weather was beautiful, our repeat customers were there, as well as some new ones, and the new format with DVAuction and our auctioneer worked seamlessly. The bulls averaged $5360 and the heifers, $3200. Thanks for everyone's confidence in our cattle, as well as your patience, as we continue to look at more ways to improve our offering and logistics of the Sale. Btw. We are not in my kitchen! Haha! This is our new “overflow, multi-purpose” building that had to serve this year as a somewhat temporary sale facility! It was a little tight but it had high speed internet and a bathroom! 😃😃😃
