If you have an orphan or injured animal please call me directly at 330-745-2947 as I DO NOT MONITOR FB messages on a regular basis and I don't want an animal in need to suffer. NOTE: I do not have an answering machine because we get so many calls that I am unable to return them so please continue to call until you reach me. Thank you! - Fran

If the animal is sick or injured, seek out help from Metropolian Vet Hosptial (free) 330-666-2976. find other rehabilitors by visiting the Ohio Wildlife Rehabilitators website at: http://owra.org/

You can also find other rehabilitators by visiting the Ohio Wildlife Rehabilitators website at: http://owra.org/ to find who is available to help you.

IMPORTANT!
The warmth for baby wildlife, especially those that have not opened their eyes, can be a matter of life and death. Keeping the baby warm until you can get it to a rehabilitator is critical. One way to do this is to wrap a bottle of hot tap water in a towel or other material and set in with the babies. DO NOT USE ANYTHING THAT HAS FRINGE as it has a way of wrapping around the legs and the torsos of the animals.

PROTEINS ...........

Feeding AVIAN SPIRULINA ™ Scientists recently announced that the food Spirulina dramatically strengthens the avian immune system. This is of great interest to veterinarians and breeders of exotic birds.
It explains why parrots suffering from opportunistic infections recover quickly when fed Spirulina.

ARUGULA is high in calcium, Vitamins K, A, and C, potassium and it contains phytochemicals which are known to fight carcinogens in the body. It has substantial fiber and has a nice smack of chlorophyll. Chlorophyll, also referred to as “liquid sunshine,” is thought to be a blood cleanser and a detoxifier and also helps heal disease in the body.

WHEATGERM FLAKES are a great general conditioner for birds, rich in vitamins and minerals.
Simply add ½ - 1 teaspoon for each pair with egg food or other soft food twice a week.
VITAMIN E - Wheatgerm is extremely high in vitamin E. Needed for nervous system functions and muscle functionality.
VITAMIN E - Wheatgerm combines Vit E and Selenium to boost fertility in birds.
OMEGA 3 & 6 – lowers cholesterol and supports the immune system.
B VITAMINS – Wheatgerm has almost all B vitamins (and folic acid).
MINERALS - Wheat germ is high in Calcium, Iron, Magnesium, Phosphorous, Potassium, Sodium, Zinc, Copper, Manganese, and Selenium (Se). Se should be with vitamin E for proper fertility boost.
Wheat germ is high in protein, carbohydrate, and fibre

PUMPKIN SEEDS . Being high in calories and protein, about 559 calories per 100 g and approximately 30% protein, they are packed with fiber, vitamins, minerals, and numerous health promoting antioxidants. Their high caloric content mainly comes from the protein and fats.
pumpkin seeds are an excellent source of the amino acids that help promote health and general condition. Pumpkin seeds are a very good source of anti-oxidant vitamin E and are also an excellent source of the vitamin B group such as thiamin, riboflavin, niacin, pantothenic acid, vitamin B-6 and folates which have a wide range of benefits for general health and a strong immune system.
Furthermore, these seeds contain very good levels of essential minerals like copper, potassium, calcium, iron, magnesium, manganese, zinc and selenium. Feed from a peanut feeder, bird table or the ground.

WALNUTS
The two most popular varieties of walnut are the English and the Black walnut. English walnuts are more widely available and can be purchased year-round. The easily extracted kernel is about 15% protein, 65% fats, and 16% carbohydrate. The kernel has about 100mg of calcium per 100mg kernel. They also are a reasonable source of B1, and thiamin. Walnuts are a good source of calcium--100mg per 100grams--important to the health of parrots who readily eat this nut.English walnuts contain 180 calories per ounce and black walnuts contain 170 calories per ounce.

ALMONDS have an excellent source of calcium, vitamin E, healthy antioxidants, and protein. Most parrots just love almonds

ALMOND BUTTER used as a treat or used in cooking for your parrots

PISTACHIOS are a plant product so they don't contain cholesterol but contain monounsaturated fats (the good fats) that will reduce the percentage of ‘bad fats’ (saturated fats) in the blood stream. Birds need unsaturated fats to keep their skin and feathers healthy and in addition to providing energy, they act as carriers for fat-soluble vitamins A, D, E and K and assist in the conversion of beta-carotene to vitamin A (a very important vitamin to birds, especially large parrots). Of course they must be fed in moderation and should only be offered as a treat

HULLED H**P SEED They're very good to boost their immune system as well. It should be fed occasionally in portions not a daily feeding regimen!!

SESAME SEEDS are exceptionally rich in manganese, iron, calcium and magnesium, all of which are essential to the avian diet. Sesame seeds also contain sesamin and sesamolin.

FLAXSEEDS are the richest commonly available seed source of alpha-linolenic acid (omega-3's). Eating whole flaxseed rather than flaxseed oils because you get the whole package: the protein, fiber, minerals and phytochemicals along with the omega-3.
Flaxseeds are also the best source of the phytochemical lignan. Flax contains 100 times the concentration of lignan as wheat bran, the second best source. Lignan is documented to have anti-bacterial, anti-fungal, anti-viral and anti-cancer properties.
NOTE: Offer flaxseeds in small amounts to your bird’s healthy diet rich in fresh fruits and vegetables, whole grains and other seeds. Flaxseed contains cyanogen, which can act to keep the thyroid from taking up enough iodine, but in small amounts is completely harmless. I sprinkle Flaxseed on my birds fresh food daily.

CASHEW NUTS They are an excellent energy source being high in copper manganese and magnesium having only slightly less than almonds.

CHIA SEED Wonderful for our birds, high in Omega 3 and vitamins. Chia seeds (for birds) can improve feathering, help to keep skin supple...good source of Vitamin E and B, calcium.
Like cherries, chia seed also contain boron - good for bones. All of the benefits above applies to humans too (except the feather quality improvement, LOL) such a healthy seed.

OATMEAL very good for them (cooked) as if given raw it will swell.

HAZLENUTS Hazelnuts are an excellent source of energy due to their high unsaturated fat and protein content.
Hazelnuts also contain a range of vitamins, minerals and amino acids which help keep birds healthy.

KALE and SPINACH Spinach and other types of leafy green vegetables such as romaine lettuce and kale are also wonderful additions to any pet bird's healthy diet. Not only do most birds love to eat these healthy veggies, they are full of nutrients and antioxidants that can boost your bird's immune system.

Because of health reasons Cindy's Bird Haven will be closing in a few days. I do still have a couple of birds for you to meet that need a forever home!! I'm still going to be very picky on where they go, so don't take this as I'm in a rush as they can stay her until I can no longer take care of them. I believe I have a lot of time left, I just have to slow down to make sure of it. However, I will never say no to any bird in need!!! Some of you have my personal information and I urge you to contact me if there's a bird in need. Although I'm closing, I'm still here to help. I just won't be taking on new clients for grooming and sitting, but I'm still here for current clients. If you don't have my personal information, message me and I'll give it to you. Thank you to everyone that has helped made my rescue the best in northeast Ohio, I love you all ❣️🥰

Read this. Let it sink in. Then read it again!

Birds bond to their humans, as humans bond to other humans. When you become sick of the behavior/screaming or “don’t have time” and you rehome them. They grieve us just as we grieve humans when we lose them. Let that sink in.
We understand life happens. So think hard about that before committing to a LIFE LONG family member.

Before buying/rehoming ANY Bird, Please, READ.

GET TO KNOW ABOUT PARROTS BEFORE YOU BRING ME HOME - I am not a domesticated pet like a dog or cat. I still have the spirit of the jungle in me. I have special needs which you may find it hard to fill. Please don't learn these too late for my well-being. And please don't acquire one of my cousin’s wild from the jungle—it will jeopardize his survival and well-being, and that won't be a party for you either!

GIVE ME THE LARGEST HOME POSSIBLE - I am used to flying through rainforests or savannahs. I have given up this great gift for your pleasure. At the very least, give me enough room to flap my wings and exercise. And I need toys for my amusement and wood to chew—otherwise, I might confuse your Home with the forest and its trees.

GIVE ME A NUTRITIOUS DIET - I need a wide variety of fresh and nutritious foods, even if they take time to prepare. I cannot survive on seeds. Take time to learn what my needs, and preferences, are.

LET ME HAVE A SOCIAL LIFE - I am a gregarious flock animal—but I am not one of you. I need lots of socialization to learn how to act with you, and with my siblings. I also need to have adequate quality time with you every day—no matter what your schedule or other needs are. I am a living, feeling creature. Above all, I need to be able to have complete trust in you, and count on your predictability in looking after me—every day.

LET ME BE CLEAN - I may like to drop food or even throw it, but I need meticulous cleanliness to be healthy. My skin itches without frequent showers, the barbs of my feathers won't seal if they become oily and, worst of all, I may become ill if my food or water is not always sanitary.

I NEED MY OWN DOCTOR - You may not understand my physiology and therefore you may not recognize it early on when I get sick. And it may be too late when you do, because I hide my illnesses (remember what I said about my being an animal of the jungle, where there are lots of predators). And I need an avian vet—a specialist (no HMOs for me please). If you can't afford one, perhaps you shouldn't have taken me home.

PLEASE DON'T PUNISH ME - Just as I don't always understand your peculiarities, you may not understand mine. I don't TRY to get in trouble—remember, a house is not the jungle. If I do screw up, don't yell at me and never hit me. I have sensitive ears and I may never trust you again if you strike me. Hands are sometimes scary things to us (why in the world would you not be zygodactylous like us?). Even more importantly, we don't learn by punishment. We are gentle creatures who only strike back to protect ourselves; we learn through patience and love.

SPEAK MY "LANGUAGE" - I know you get upset with me when I knock over my water bowl, throw food, scream or pluck my feathers. I don't do these to annoy you—I am probably trying to tell you something (perhaps that I am hurting, lonely, or sad.). Learn to speak MY (body) language. Remember that I, alone of all creatures on this planet, learn to speak yours!

SEE ME AS AN INDIVIDUAL - I am a unique and feeling being. No two of us are alike. Please don't be disappointed in me if I don't talk like you wanted, or can't do the tricks that your friend's parrot can do. But if you pay close attention to me (and I always empathize with you, whether you know it or not), I will show you a unique being who will give you so much more than talking and playing.. Give me a chance to show you who I am; I think you'll find the effort worth it. And remember—I am not an ornament;. I do not enhance ANY living room décor. And I am not a status symbol—if you use me as such, I might nip at your up-turned nose!

SHARE YOUR LOVE WITH ME - Above all, please remember that you are my Special Person. I put all my trust and faith in you. We parrots are used to being monogamous.(no bar-hopping for us!).So please don't go away for long periods or give me away—that would be a sadness from which I may never recover. If that seems to be asking a lot, remember—you could have learned about my needs before bringing me home. Even having a baby or taking a new job isn't a fair reason—you made a commitment to me FIRST. And if you think that you must leave me because you might die, provide for me forever after you leave. I may live to a ripe old age but I can't provide for myself. Remember I'm in a small cage amongst people who are not of my blood.

YOU’RE RIGHTS - You have lots of rights, but I can only assure one. And that is, if you treat me the way I described above, I will reward you with unwavering love, humor, knowledge, beauty, dedication -- and a sense of wonder and awe you haven't felt since you were a child. When you took me home, you became my Flock Leader, indeed, my entire universe – for life. I would hang the moon and stars for you if I could. We are one in Heart and Soul.

Bird ownership is NOT for everyone, accept that.

Angel's Vet appointment was great, blood work and all. Dr Pappas is happy that her feathers are coming back in and she's not currently plucking. The only blood test that came back off, was from her plucking and the level is dropping, meaning she's healing. She's very healthy.

Bigger cage. Better life.

Did you know that most people keeping parrots as pets are keeping them in cages that are too small? We encourage you to go measure your cockatoo's cage and then compare it to minimum size needed for your species.
