PROTEINS ...........
Feeding AVIAN SPIRULINA ™ Scientists recently announced that the food Spirulina dramatically strengthens the avian immune system. This is of great interest to veterinarians and breeders of exotic birds.
It explains why parrots suffering from opportunistic infections recover quickly when fed Spirulina.
ARUGULA is high in calcium, Vitamins K, A, and C, potassium and it contains phytochemicals which are known to fight carcinogens in the body. It has substantial fiber and has a nice smack of chlorophyll. Chlorophyll, also referred to as “liquid sunshine,” is thought to be a blood cleanser and a detoxifier and also helps heal disease in the body.
WHEATGERM FLAKES are a great general conditioner for birds, rich in vitamins and minerals.
Simply add ½ - 1 teaspoon for each pair with egg food or other soft food twice a week.
VITAMIN E - Wheatgerm is extremely high in vitamin E. Needed for nervous system functions and muscle functionality.
VITAMIN E - Wheatgerm combines Vit E and Selenium to boost fertility in birds.
OMEGA 3 & 6 – lowers cholesterol and supports the immune system.
B VITAMINS – Wheatgerm has almost all B vitamins (and folic acid).
MINERALS - Wheat germ is high in Calcium, Iron, Magnesium, Phosphorous, Potassium, Sodium, Zinc, Copper, Manganese, and Selenium (Se). Se should be with vitamin E for proper fertility boost.
Wheat germ is high in protein, carbohydrate, and fibre
PUMPKIN SEEDS . Being high in calories and protein, about 559 calories per 100 g and approximately 30% protein, they are packed with fiber, vitamins, minerals, and numerous health promoting antioxidants. Their high caloric content mainly comes from the protein and fats.
pumpkin seeds are an excellent source of the amino acids that help promote health and general condition. Pumpkin seeds are a very good source of anti-oxidant vitamin E and are also an excellent source of the vitamin B group such as thiamin, riboflavin, niacin, pantothenic acid, vitamin B-6 and folates which have a wide range of benefits for general health and a strong immune system.
Furthermore, these seeds contain very good levels of essential minerals like copper, potassium, calcium, iron, magnesium, manganese, zinc and selenium. Feed from a peanut feeder, bird table or the ground.
WALNUTS
The two most popular varieties of walnut are the English and the Black walnut. English walnuts are more widely available and can be purchased year-round. The easily extracted kernel is about 15% protein, 65% fats, and 16% carbohydrate. The kernel has about 100mg of calcium per 100mg kernel. They also are a reasonable source of B1, and thiamin. Walnuts are a good source of calcium--100mg per 100grams--important to the health of parrots who readily eat this nut.English walnuts contain 180 calories per ounce and black walnuts contain 170 calories per ounce.
ALMONDS have an excellent source of calcium, vitamin E, healthy antioxidants, and protein. Most parrots just love almonds
ALMOND BUTTER used as a treat or used in cooking for your parrots
PISTACHIOS are a plant product so they don't contain cholesterol but contain monounsaturated fats (the good fats) that will reduce the percentage of ‘bad fats’ (saturated fats) in the blood stream. Birds need unsaturated fats to keep their skin and feathers healthy and in addition to providing energy, they act as carriers for fat-soluble vitamins A, D, E and K and assist in the conversion of beta-carotene to vitamin A (a very important vitamin to birds, especially large parrots). Of course they must be fed in moderation and should only be offered as a treat
HULLED H**P SEED They're very good to boost their immune system as well. It should be fed occasionally in portions not a daily feeding regimen!!
SESAME SEEDS are exceptionally rich in manganese, iron, calcium and magnesium, all of which are essential to the avian diet. Sesame seeds also contain sesamin and sesamolin.
FLAXSEEDS are the richest commonly available seed source of alpha-linolenic acid (omega-3's). Eating whole flaxseed rather than flaxseed oils because you get the whole package: the protein, fiber, minerals and phytochemicals along with the omega-3.
Flaxseeds are also the best source of the phytochemical lignan. Flax contains 100 times the concentration of lignan as wheat bran, the second best source. Lignan is documented to have anti-bacterial, anti-fungal, anti-viral and anti-cancer properties.
NOTE: Offer flaxseeds in small amounts to your bird’s healthy diet rich in fresh fruits and vegetables, whole grains and other seeds. Flaxseed contains cyanogen, which can act to keep the thyroid from taking up enough iodine, but in small amounts is completely harmless. I sprinkle Flaxseed on my birds fresh food daily.
CASHEW NUTS They are an excellent energy source being high in copper manganese and magnesium having only slightly less than almonds.
CHIA SEED Wonderful for our birds, high in Omega 3 and vitamins. Chia seeds (for birds) can improve feathering, help to keep skin supple...good source of Vitamin E and B, calcium.
Like cherries, chia seed also contain boron - good for bones. All of the benefits above applies to humans too (except the feather quality improvement, LOL) such a healthy seed.
OATMEAL very good for them (cooked) as if given raw it will swell.
HAZLENUTS Hazelnuts are an excellent source of energy due to their high unsaturated fat and protein content.
Hazelnuts also contain a range of vitamins, minerals and amino acids which help keep birds healthy.
KALE and SPINACH Spinach and other types of leafy green vegetables such as romaine lettuce and kale are also wonderful additions to any pet bird's healthy diet. Not only do most birds love to eat these healthy veggies, they are full of nutrients and antioxidants that can boost your bird's immune system.
