Here’s to the owners who are outside every couple of hours to monitor their horses’ health in these frigid temps.

Here’s to the owners who are checking waterers for ice. Here’s to the owners who are freezing their fingers to hang up their hose, or bringing hoses inside their house to keep from freezing.

Here’s to the owners switching blankets, double blanketing, or cleaning out shelters for their unblanketed horses. Here’s to the owners who are worried if their horse is staying warm enough with or without their blanket.

Here’s to the owners who are throwing countless flakes of loose hay out while making sure the round bale feeders don’t go empty.

Here’s to the owners praying that equipment starts, and hydraulics work smoothly. Here’s to the owners who figure it out when the equipment fails you.

Here’s to the messy mud room, filled with winter bibs, charged heated vests, boot dryers plugged in, and headlamps charged. Here’s to the countless pairs of gloves you have to swap out each time you venture outside.

Here’s to the rigorous training schedules, riding lessons, and busy barn coming to a halt. Here’s to putting the health of the animal’s first.

Here’s to the part of horse management that isn’t so glamorous. Thank you for all you are doing for the safety and wellbeing of your horses during this time.

Here’s to all of us ❄️🩵

Our horses get the royal treatment while we’re over here patching ourselves up with expired bandages. Priorities, right?

Wow! 😍 What a stunning 6 month transformation Charlie’s had!!! You can’t see ribs anymore, ever! 😍☺️👏👏👏❤️ We are still fine-tuning things but we’ve made so much progress with him and I’m so incredibly proud of him!!! 🥹 He grows and matures a little more every day!!! I CAN’T WAIT to see where he is this summer! 😍☺️❤️❤️❤️

“The cold never bothered us anyway!” 🥰🥰🥰❤️❤️❤️

We blanket because we are humans and we feel incredibly cold, lol. 😂 All of our horses have been blanketed through this cold snap. But they honestly couldn’t be happier!!! They are still enjoying 24 hour turnout and unlimited hay, with extra hay in the shelters during the cold snap, even during this cold. 😊❤️

My insulation project on our troughs is going amazingly well! They were heated before but would form perimeter ice below 20. With the insulation they are staying ice-free as cold as -2 with the windchill! It’s not done yet as I will be covering the insulation but they are functional and working well!!! Cold days offer opportunities to find improvements to improve their lives and comfort. 😊❤️

❄️ For some, it is rug season again! ❄️

Whilst there may be differing opinions on if/when is the right time to rug horses, there is one thing that we can all agree on, the importance of SAFETY and fastening rugs correctly. Here are some key guidelines that are all to often overlooked. Using the correct way to fasten rugs should help avoid accidents such as getting attached to hay nets and getting legs stuck in straps. 🐴💙

👉 Face hooks inward. Always position clips towards your horse’s body to prevent them from getting snagged on fences, hay nets, or anything else. Outward-facing clips can get caught or come undone, risking injury if your horse panics.

👉 Cross those straps! Belly straps should always be crossed (some rugs do have a different arrangement now, i.e. 3 straight straps, follow the manufactures intentions) to prevent twisting. A twisted rug can cause rubbing, discomfort, injury, or even panic if your horse feels trapped or gets a leg caught in poorly fitted straps.
Leg straps must also be crossed in a loop, this prevents rubbing on the inside of the hind legs and keeps the rug level, it also stops the straps hanging to low and risking a leg getting caught as the horse gets up or down.

The image shows visual examples of correct and incorrect strap and fastening placements.
