Lactating dairy animals are required to have a negative HPAI test prior to going to fairs or shows in WI!

This is a milk test that must be sent to the state lab. The sample needs to be collected within 7 days of the animal arriving at the fair.

There is no cost for the test through the lab and the USDA will provide reimbursement to producers for shipping of samples and veterinary costs. Premise ID is needed for the funding to cover testing and producers must submit information for reimbursement of the veterinary cost and shipping.

Please schedule ahead of time if you plan on taking a lactating animal to a fair this year to ensure results are available within the proper timeline! For the Buffalo County Fair this would mean testing should be done on Thursday 7/25, Friday 7/26, or Monday 7/29 to be ready for animals to arrive on Thursday 8/1 at the fair.

Please call with any questions or to schedule at 715-926-3821!!!

Did you know that although cattle can acclimate well to cold weather, they still experience cold stress? Cold stress effects mainly come in the form of inadequate energy during the third trimester of pregnancy. This can include weak calves, increased rates of retained placentas, and a longer post-partum period (cows that take longer to get bred back!)

For every one degree below 20°F, cow energy requirements go up 1%. A study from the University of Nebraska found that for every 1° decrease in average winter temperatures, there was a 1 lb average increase in calf birth weight and a 2.6% increase in dystocia rate.

Here are some ideas to help keep your cows warm this winter and ensure they are getting the energy they need:
❄️Go into winter with cows who have enough body weight.
❄️Feed more energy or a higher quality forage during colder months.
❄️Make sure cows have wind breaks available.
❄️Keep appropriate amounts of dry bedding in the areas blocked by wind.
❄️Feed in the late afternoon or evening. The peak amount of body heat produced by digestion will then occur during the night when it is coldest.
❄️Make sure water sources are not frozen. Animals will not eat normal amounts if they do not have enough water.

Stay warm!
