How she still loves and trusts humans after all they’ve done to her in the past, I may never know but she is definitely a very sweet and gentle girl. Siren, as we’ve decided to name her, has already made amazing steps in her recovery. She had her first bowel movement today which is very exciting for an emaciated cat who had an empty GI tract just yesterday afternoon. She’s taking her meds like a champ and she’s taking every chance she can get to get a little head rub or ear scritches. So far today, we’ve slowly worked our way through 3 cans of @weruva kitten food and she’s licked the bowl clean every time. We’re being careful not to go too quickly with her refeeding, though I’m not sure Siren approves of the slower pace 😅. She’s so determined to live and get back to being healthy so it’s making my job a lot easier since she’s so cooperative. I already know that she’ll enjoy all the love and attention she gets once she’s healthy enough to be in the main room.

Yes, someone did tell us that if we don’t get the cat we took in today seen immediately that it would be abuse. We specified in the post that person commented on (which was asking for donations to get her seen by the vet) that the cat would get care regardless but we were the only rescue to even agree to look at her, let alone try to get her treated and we didn’t have the funding for emergency vet fees right now. We immediately called our primary care vet and scheduled her an appointment next week and then started calling around every other vet we could think of to try to get her in sooner. All of this was happening after we’d posted asking for donations and we were planning all of this as a backup in case we didn’t get enough funding to get her taken to the emergency vet. Behind the scenes, my secretary, a former vet assistant who has worked in the rescue field for 6 years, was driving out to come evaluate the cat in person so we could get a better idea of how urgent her situation was. We learned about this cat at 11:53am this morning and by 3:30pm we’d gotten her a vet appointment for 5:30pm tonight, had her initial evaluation planned and transportation prepped for her to be taken out there after we close the shop for the day. I’d say that was us trying our best to get her care asap and if, for some reason, someone doesn’t agree, I’d like to invite them to try getting that much organized sooner than we did and provide all the funding for us to support that. In other words, don’t just point fingers and complain while you sit there and don’t offer help.
To end on a more positive note: HUGE thank you to everyone who sent in donations for her and helped us get her the medical care she needs! We could not do this without your support and it’s so touching for us to see everyone come together for the sake of a single, wonderful creature that deserves all the love in the world.

If you follow our page, you’ve already heard about this new sweet girl and now she’s here to make her grand introduction. She was found 40+ miles away from any homes or neighborhoods out in Sweet Home and she’s in pretty rough shape. She was wearing a flea collar that was so tight it was choking her, she had an ulcer on her eye, missing claws on some toes, an upper respiratory infection and she is severely underweight. She is about 2-3 years old and she only weighs 4.5lbs. We’re at the vet now and they’re doing a blood test to get some more answers on what she’s dealing with but the good news is, she’s in much better shape than we previously thought. From the way the person who found her described the situation and her condition, we thought she was much worse off but this is definitely a treatable situation. She’s getting a few different medications tonight that we’ll start her on asap so she should make a full recovery with some time. Thank you so much to everyone who donated to help her get seen sooner. Funding is very tight right now so it means the world to us that you all helped make it possible to get this sweet girl what she needed right away.

Whenever I have a cat staying in the kennel for intake quarantine, I try to let them out at least twice a day to stretch their legs and play a little. They already get a huge kennel, it’s big enough that I have to scoot it around to get to some of my supplies when it’s assembled, but I feel bad keeping them cooped up all day long. If they’re clearly sick then I’ll keep them in the kennel to make sanitizing the space easier but for cases like this sweet girl, we’re just waiting for her to be cleared by the vet before she gets introduced to the other kittens. She has gotten a bath, had a flea and tick treatment and been dewormed so we just need the vet to look her over before she can meet the other cats. She’s already gotten so much more relaxed just over the few days I’ve had her here. She plays with toys, cuddles and sits in my lap now when she’s out in the room. Watching them realize they’re safe and start to show their personality is one of my favorite parts of rescue. This sweet girl is actually already in the introduction room (still in the kennel, just moved in there) since she’s been doing so well.

Whenever we have extra time on a sunny day in the shop, Saturn loves to sit out in the entry way and soak up all the sunshine. This time of year it’s not very often that we get sunny weather like this so he and I are loving every second of it.

We were trying to distract him while clipping his nails…mission failed 😂 Mind you, it normally takes 4 people to clip his nails safely and we’ve still never finished trimming all his nails so with just two of us, we knew it wasn’t looking too promising. This was actually some of the calmer noises he was making since I had to pause trying to clip his nails since both of us were laughing too much at his goofy sounds- I mean, we were so intimidated by how tough he sounded that we were frozen in fear….as far as he knows anyways

Yet another stray kitten that was turned away from the humane society, and this one even appears to be in good health. She was completely fine with being handled and picked up, enjoyed some check rubs after she calmed down a bit so I see no reason for them to reject her. It’s so frustrating for small rescues like us when we see massive operations with millions of dollars and more staff than I could dream of, refuse a single kitten who would’ve gone back on the street if nobody else took her. We don’t even have enough to pay rent next month and we’re struggling to get basic supplies this month and I still said I’d take her since I know that no matter how badly I’m struggling, she would’ve been struggling just to survive if she’d been put back on the street. I’d encourage everyone to donate more to independent rescuers instead of larger organizations that use hundreds of thousands of your dollars to pay themselves. My Secretary is one of the most amazing humans I’ve ever had the pleasure of knowing and do you know what she said when I asked her if she’d accept the Secretary position? “Yes, on one condition: I don’t want you to pay me. I don’t want to take money from the cats.”
