It's and this is a very cool one with just ONE day between the first and last images. This horse was diagnosed with facet arthritis when he began having difficulty learning his flying changes while making the jump from second level to third in his regular training program. There is a lot that goes into correcting muscle patterns and posture, and just as much that goes into maintaining the corrective changes for positive longevity. First image is pre-session. Second image is after session. Third image is after our second session in a row. Consistency, a balanced diet (amino acids!), regular saddle fittings (maybe a new saddle if he gets any more buff!), and support from his team is the recipe to success!

And a little ... Our lovely Friesian horses were originally bred to trot, trot, trot. Teaching them to lean more towards "back moving" and further away from "leg moving" is absolutely critical to showing off this fancy and athletic breed to the best of their ability. And for a long time!

Sweet Sky, the matriarch of our herd. She is the first to sooth a nervous newbie and the best babysitter in the world. Horses learn surprisingly well by observing, and Sky leads by example. We are lucky to have her around into old age to share her kindness, patience, and wisdom.

We all had a great time with .gentry.18 at the farm to check in with our bit and bridle needs. Mouth confirmation, horses' way of going, rider tendancies, and horse/rider level of development are very important. Thank you .gentry.18 for sharing your immense experience and helping to take the time consuming guess work and frustration out of trying many different bits in order to find just the right ones! And a big thank you to our team who make it possible for us to share the experience by participating. It was lovely to have a small clinic at our cozy farm. 🐴

If you're like me and want to find the balance between protecting your horse's legs and keeping them cool, try different products to see what works best for the job!

I recently tried a pair of fancy and expensive boots with mentions of things like "next generation," "ventilated," "breathable," and the most exciting "proprietary technology." I couldn't believe how quickly Caden's legs warmed up while comparing to a basic, simple, cheap, polo wrap!

I recently tried a quality boot from a brand I already liked. They looked professional, they offered good coverage, they were convenient for me to put on and take off, they were easy to clean, and they did, in fact, help keep the temperature of the leg cool. They were well worth the price, but I was sad to find that they just didn't fit Caden's unique proportions.

All roads seem to lead me back to these trusty polo wraps that are only a little bit different than your typical fleece and his legs always feel about the same temperature as the rest of his body by the end of a ride. I don't mind taking a few extra minutes to apply a wrap until I find a more convenient boot I really like. The great thing about a basic wrap is that they fit just about anyone and for a fraction of the price of fancy marketing!

"Training is not to make a quiet horse, but an intelligent one."
-Tristan Tucker

While working with different types of horses, many can be categorized by their unique way of reacting to stress. Just like humans, horses are individuals that grow and change and its important to know that labels are not one size fits all. Sometimes the pendulum of training swings and that's a completely NORMAL part of correct development to increase confidence, understanding and balance. Which of these 3 responses could currently characterize your horse?

Fight- 🥊 The fight response can manifest as assertiveness, aggression, or bossiness. This is when your horse reacts by confronting what they perceive to be the source of their anxiety.

Flight- 🏃‍♀️ The flight response is characterized by increased reactivity and potential explosive reactions. This is when your horse wants to flee from what they perceive to be the source of their anxiety.

Freeze- 😱 The freeze response can be the trickiest to identify and is often mistaken for the positive "desensitization," some spend many hours searching for, until it transitions into either fight, flight, or both. Your horse may appear desensitized, shut down, still or rigid, while they could be internalizing their concerns. When a horse utilizes the freeze response, they may hold their breath in an attempt to make themselves inconspicuous to blend in with the environment until their perceived source of anxiety is gone.

with our girl, Sky. Then and now. Sky has always been a dedicated partner and special teacher. Our seniors deserve the best retirement we can provide after many years of unwavering partnership. It's a good life made even better by providing her with another job that she loves later in life. Being the "nanny" to our young (and giant in comparison), Sebastiana is clearly a role she fits into well. 🥰

. 🍎 With show season ramping up here in Georgia, our horses and riders have all gained a baseline for our 2023 journaling and goal setting. So let's get SMART! 🧠

Specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time bound... Let's get into it! 👏

✏️ S: Specific- be specific on what you would like to accomplish and what steps you will need to take in order to accomplish that goal, then come up with any micro goals needed to reach your main goals.

Example- If you'd like to learn or teach your horse flying changes, there are a few boxes that you must check first! 1. Simple changes/ canter/walk/canter transitions into both true and counter canter. 2. The ability to lengthen and shorten the canter on the spot. 3. Insure reliable haunches-in and shoulder-in at walk, trot and canter.

Or maybe you'd like to compete in your first training level test! Then you must check off, 1. The ability to make an accurate 20 meter circle at the trot and canter. 2. A reliable stretchy trot on the 20 meter circle. (which comes up quite quickly and leaves before you know it!) 3. An over all understanding of basic geometry and how that relates to your dressage court and letter placement. Or for those riding the new training level tests, 4. An accurate shallow loop serpentine.

⚖️M: Measurable- your goals must be measurable and made easy to track progress so that you know when you've reached the finish line.

Example: "I would like to bring my usual score of 6 on my leg yeild up to a score of 7."

Or maybe you need a new peice of equipment... "I would like to buy a new show jacket by saving up $50 per month for 5 months."

📖A: Achievable- You must have a serious look in the mirror to determine if this is something that you and your team can accomplish, a healthy challenge that isn't too difficult. Risk balanced with preparation is where the fine line of equestrian success lives but, you should be sure that you have set your team up for reasonably achievable success. Positivity, resources and good intruction/support is key.

Example: "I would like to ride 5 days per week and gain confidence riding off property." Well, you'll need well fitting tack to prevent back soreness in your horse, this requires a great saddle fitter as well as safe transport to off property schooling locations.

Example: There could be 5 or 50 other competitors in your class. Instead of setting the goal that you'd like to place 1st in your class, instead, determine a dressage score, making a clean jump round or keeping your young horse calm and confident during their firsts.

👩‍🏫R: Relevant- You should know your "why." Do your goals seem worth while? Are you able to find motivation to reach them? Does your lifestyle allow for your goal reaching trajectory?

⏰️T: Time bound- Stating that you "want to improve" is not quite enough. No one is more responsible for your goals than you are. When there is a will, there is always a way. You should not be too critical when you encounter set backs but, we need to be flexible and allow for the unexpected.

Something that I have always done is to list my yearly goals with each horse and rider in an order of what I can explain as "bronze," "silver" and, "gold" goal reaching. As with most things in horses, we prepare, prepare, prepare. Work, work, work. All to then hurry up and wait while humbly hoping we've done everything right. So, my "bronze" goal is the minimum amount of growth and my "gold" goal is hard work along with a little bit of incalculable good fortune.

🌟And this is my for you... What are your bronze, silver and gold goals for 2023?

I'll go first with our sweet coming 4 year old filly, Sebastiana!

🥉Bronze- To participate in this year's USDF breed shows to earn her enough scores to qualify for a Horse of the Year Award, All Breed Award and to qualify for the Dressage Sport Horse Breeder's Championship. Since she has been lightly backed, I would also like her and her (human) Mom to do their first Intro level tests together to gain confidence working together and trusting each other under pressure. (And having fun dressing up 😉)

🥈Silver- To qualify at Training Level for our Region's Championships held at WEC this September.

🥇Gold- To compete in the USDF 4 year old test before the end of the year.

🏆Bonus goals include attending breed inspections and participating in her Hanoverian Mare Performance Test if time and scheduling allows.

Our challenges mostly relate to giving Sebastiana a smaller workload and fewer miles than the average horse of a more mature riding age. "Seb" will get 2 months off from training this year regardless of her performance in competitions and inspections. Her training time is also kept to a minimum at about 2-3 rides per week kept under 30 mins each with minimal circles and no ridden lateral work outside of show dates. We will continue to break down our goals, strategize, determine our strengths and weaknesses together, stay positive and keep on keepin' on. 💪 Go team, go!

It's never too soon to start our youngsters off on the right hoof. Bathing, in-hand and trail walking, oh my! Providing small, regular sessions in response training, or what we like to call "brain teasers," makes a world of difference in the confidence and abilities of our littlest ones. Working to build great habits that will follow them through a future of life long learning. While it's also never too late to start and we love our golden oldies the same, neural plasticity is highest at a young age and a great thing to enjoy with your partner if you have the opportunity!

01/03/2023

This strapping young man is bringing in the new year and showing off his 2022 gains in a two for one and post! It is hard to believe that handsome Taylor will be 27 years old this year and that he is in fact, not aging backwards.

Today's is to remember that low intensity exercises provide high value for horses of all ages and training levels!

A few reasons why you should regularly incorporate low intensity work into your schedule:
🐴 Stimulates postural muscles to support spinal stability.
🐴 Decreases demand on ligaments and joints.
🐴 Helps reduce joint pain.
🐴 Provides mental stimulation.
🐴 Decreases the speed of decline in seniors.
🐴 Boosts circulation. (Which could help prevent colic!)
🐴 Assists in weight management.
🐴 Increases propriosception.
🐴 A great way to exercise your horse if space is limited.
🐴 A great way to exercise your horse if movement is limited due to injury or illness. (With vet approval 😉)
🐴 Helps our ex show horses feel like they're still in the game at their own speed with their team.
🐴 Helps our youngsters start a structured training routine while building strength in anticipation for larger work loads later.
🐴 Helpful in providing a baseline of your horse's normal movement and an opportunity to regularly check in with how they're feeling.

A few of the low intensity exercises we regularly incorporate into our program are:
💪Unmounted hill work.
💪Walk cavalettis.
💪Carrot stretches.
💪Use of balance pads.
💪In-hand work.
💪Intentional grooming/massage.
💪Physical therapy exercises assigned by our vets.
💪Use of kinesiology tape between training/rehab sessions and to support effects of body work.
💪 Prioritized turn out with safe footing. Bonus hills and friends to move around and forage with when possible! 🤸‍♀️

If your horse has any physical ailments, pain management must be discussed with your vet prior to beginning work. Good exercise and training may seem relatively easy but we fully utilize and thoroughly appreciate our support team!

Let us know what other low intensity exercises you love to use! 🥂 To health and wellness for all in 2023! 🎉🎉🎉
