Raticon was so much fun! I got to meet some amazing breeders in person for the first time from around the country, share my own rats, and we're bringing home a werewolf, which I'm so excited to work with! I'm so excited to make this a regular thing!

I wanna talk about dog breeding real quick.
I'm not a professional or expert by ANY means, but in 10-15 years, I'd love to breed chihuahuas (Well-bred chihuahuas are amazing, loving pets). I do have pretty basic knowledge and then some right now though.
The more I learn about ethical breeding, and the more I see my friends and family supporting backyard breeders, the more adopt-dont-shop I become.
Please, I beg of you, just because someone puts on a bleeding heart act and tells you how much they love their dogs, just because they're friendly, does NOT mean they are an ethical breeder. Love is not enough to be needlessly bringing mutts into this world, when shelters are already so overpopulated 🙁
If you aren't willing to spend $1k+ on a dog, please just adopt (ethical puppy rearing is expensive!). If you aren't willing to travel for the right puppy, or organize transport, please just adopt (of course there are some exceptions with that one, but for more rarer breeds, you're probably going to have to travel). If you want a dog for looks and don't care about temperament, please just adopt.
The ONLY reason dogs should be bred is to prevent breed extinction, and to improve the breed. Breeding dogs need to be proven. Breeding dogs need to be health tested (there are different requirements for every breed). They need to be in standard. If they aren't, what's the point of calling it the breed that it is? At that point, you're just making "dogs".
Please join parent clubs. Attend dog shows! Any "breeder" can claim they health test, but they need to be testing for breed specific issues; find out what those issues are so that you aren't in the dark!
This is more of a rant, but if you guys want, I can compile some resources to differentiate between ethical and backyard breeders 🙂

I don't know where this breeder is located, but this is absolutely not true. This is fear mongering. I do not support breeders who don't base things in science, and I do think it's blacklist worthy. Breeding is a science. Oxbow is proven to be one of the BEST brands of rat food, along with mazuri. The only "con" is that they don't label their food as "non-gmo"; if you aren't aware, that stands for "genetically modified organism". GMO's are literally just selective breeding. Technically, our lovely domestic dogs are a GMO.
Sounds like they just have poorly bred rats, and they don't want to address that.

So if you don't already know, I'm a trans man, and I'm getting top surgery on November 2nd! I'm so incredibly excited for this, even besides being trans, my giant breasts have given me so much physical pain, and I'm so excited to not have to deal with that anymore.

Nothing in particular has spurred this, but I just want to say something about it.
My lack of contact and my slow responses are not individual specific. I feel terrible for it, but I just want you all to know it's because of the mental illnesses and neurodivergency that I struggle with. My mental struggles do not affect the care and time I dedicate to my breeding program, but they do affect how I interact with people. I'm not trying to excuse myself, but I do hope for sympathy while I learn good communication skills. You all are so good to me and I couldn't ask for a better community. Thank you.
