Carolina Equine Rescue & Assistance

Carolina Equine Rescue & Assistance www.Cera-Inc.com. Please visit our website. Darlene Kindle didn't set out to have 13 horses, but these 13 horses need her. Consider donating time instead.

Rescued from abuse or neglect or lately, simply unwitting victims of the economy, these horses found their way to CERA, Carolina Equine Rescue & Assistance. As you can imagine, caring for all these horses is time consuming and costly. Volunteers and donations are always highly valued at CERA. Established by Darlene in April 2008, CERA created a rescue
organization that not only worked with local

law enforcement in seizure and surrenders, but one that could help educate owners on how to properly care for their animals and hopefully avoid unlawful neglect. Darlene also wanted to be able to take in horses that were at risk due to hardship of their owners, almost eerily forecasting the current state of our economy and the rapidly increasing numbers of abandoned pets. And most of all, Darlene wanted all monies donated to CERA to remain in Union County to help the horses locally, unlike other rescues. CERA also works to educate horse owners, law enforcement and animal control on basic equine management
With today's tight economy, many are finding it harder to make donations, even to organizations they have traditionally supported. Make a commitment to volunteer at CERA each week. Not an experienced horse person? No problem, there are plenty of different tasks involved in caring for all the horses, many of which don't require extensive horse handling skills. Darlene has a book filled with photos and stories of all
the horses she has cared for over the last 3 years. “Each horse has its own story and most are heartbreaking to animal lovers like yourself. Each animal also has its own personalities, likes and dislikes. CERA attempts to treat each animal under its protection with tender loving care until it is ready to be placed in its forever home.”
Good quality horse hay is always in demand. Sold your horse and have a few bales left over you hadn't used up yet? Consider making a tax-deductible donation of your remaining bales to CERA.

Hey everyone. How’s everyone doing with this bitter cold weather in NC? Now the snow is coming. Please be prepared. We have been filling extra buckets and anything that holds water. Putting salt in feed. Offering salt blocks in the pasture and in the stalls. Everyone that needs a blanket is warm and toasty. Does anyone need a blanket? Let me know what your “keep warm” tips are. Have a good evening.

Good Christmas Eve morning everyone!!

First I want to say that I’m guilty, I haven’t been faithful about posting updates on what CERA is doing. I can assure you I am still here and helping animals in need.

3 years ago all of you came together and raised enough money so that CERA could continue helping horses and other animals by donating enough money to put a down payment on another farm. It’s been a very hard time for many of since Covid hit including CERA & me. I

We lost our lease on the other farm after 14 years. I was in the hospital for 2 months. I lost my Papa, Papa Tony my rock, my stepfather David and John decided he no longer wanted to live the farm life. Back in the hospital with severe pain in my back and legs. Found a doctor that could finally help me and give me a diagnosis, osteoporosis, bulging discs, compression fracture in my back which has healed and severe vitamin D deficiency. That’s a lot, but at age 67 I’m grateful to be alive and still working the farm.

During all this time I have managed to turn this property into a farm. Clearing land, fencing, putting up a barn, dealing with contractors all by myself. And also caring for the animals that remain unadoptable. Sam, Dodger, Oliver, Gus, Alfie, Hope and 2 new additions Donte’ blind and Daisy our guardian mule. I still have the peacocks, chickens and new additions Dusty & Rose Holland Lops, and 2 cats, thanks to my beautiful daughter that decided cats are needed here.

We had planned to have an open house but honestly that’s a lot of work and I would be doing most of the organizing myself. I still have a lot of work to do, I just had 4 acres cleared for another pasture. Still need fencing,, doing my best to get that done in the next month. Right now my priorities are taking care of what is here and making sure they all have what they need during this bitter cold winter.

Even though the open house is not on the calendar I want all of you to know that visitors are always welcome.

I have attached some pictures of the land transformation and some of the animals.

Please know that I am still here and doing the work that God intended for me to do, helping the animals. I may not have the strength I use to have, but I do have my brain and my vision. I’m hoping that I will be able to make this land a permanent sanctuary for livestock. That is one thing on my To Do list.

I hope all of you have a very Merry Christmas. Enjoy life, cherish your time, love you kids and family, be kind and take care of yourselves. Big hugs to all, Happy Holidays. 🥰

Hey everyone. What an amazing day. I wasn’t able to get enough donations to fill the tractor trailer so we decided to get a flatbed to take much needed supplies to folks in dire need. Flatbed came about 9:30 this morning and the work began. We collected over 200 bales of hay, horse blankets, fencing, miscellaneous horse supplies, warm weather clothes, and a few new stuffed animals for the children. A huge thank you to everyone that donated. Thank you to Joanie & Eric for donating their time and the flatbed. Thank you to all the volunteers that moved over 200 bales of hay from the trailer to the flatbed that was jam packed, even the back seat of the truck. A big thank you to Tommy for connecting me with an individual with the United States Air Force. All of these folks working together made this happen very quickly.

The flatbed left, went to the designated area where chinook helicopters were waiting to load and air drop all done the same day. One of the reasons I held on to the hay is I was concerned if it went in storage it would begin to mold.

If I get enough interest I will do this again in 2-3 months.

Again, a huge thank you to everyone that made this happen. Have a good evening, continue to pray not only for the folks that lived this nightmare and all the volunteers that are helping. Big hugs. Darlene

Hey everyone. I’m not even sure how to start this post. Many of you know that CERA farm is located in Monroe,NC. Which is approximately 2.5 hours from Black Mountain, one of the hardest areas hit by Helene.

My heart continues to be shattered by the catastrophic damage that Helene caused.

I have watched the videos, listened to people begging for help to be rescued, over 200 people have died and over 1,000 are still missing, per the news channels.

I’m also hearing stories of looting, towns that have too many supplies and towns that no supplies. People are furious with the government, FEMA and other large organizations. People posting AI photos, some say the media isn’t doing enough to cover the devastation. And now conspiracy theories. And the list goes on.

Damnit!!! Why, for once can’t people be truthful!!! There are lives involved and not only people but animals. Who can we believe? What charities are legit in what they say & do? And of course the scammers are out trying to collect donations.

Why can’t these people that are so dishonest help for once instead of thinking about only theirselves. The politicians, the last thing I want to see right now is an ad to vote for someone running for office.

There are good people out there that are risking their lives to save lives. I commend everyone that is at the front lines willing to help these people get back to a some what normal life asking for nothing in return.

And now Milton is approaching. What will that bring? How many more lives will be lost?

I’m mad, I’m mad as hell and at the same time my heart is shattered, I have never cried so much as I have in the last week and a half.

Please tell me how everyone is coping? Me, I clean, taking my frustrations out on a floor, mucking stalls etc. If my hands are idle I think but if I’m doing something it helps me cope.

We need to all come together and help each other the best way we can. Even if it’s just to take the time to listen. I have received calls from California, Utah, Montana, Maui and several other places. The first thing they say to me is thank you for answering the phone. No one else will answer.

I will continue to pray, send positive energy and thoughts to everyone.

You are more than welcome to comment, call or PM me, but please if you are going to comment anything negative it will be deleted. I do not need or want to hear it. Love and hugs to all.

Darlene.

CERA’s trailer will join the Stanly County Sheriff’s department in traveling to WNC. They already have the paper work and permits, so we will be part of their convoy!!! Stanly County has gone above and beyond and will continue to ensure that all of the donations actually get delivered to the places where they are needed most! The teams they have already sent to the western part of N.C. are working around the clock helping communities in desperate need.
Some items that are needed the most: Buckets, feed bowls, fencing, containers to store feed, dewormers, halters, lead ropes, blankets, etc.

Please only new or gently used clean items. If you have any grain to donate you can bring it Friday between 2:00-7:00. We are hopeful that with your help, this trailer will be headed to WNC this weekend. Please feel free to share.

Good morning. I wanted to let you know that if you want to help the horses effected by Helene, you are more than welcome to make a donation with my PayPal,Zelle or Venmo. PLEASE MAKE SURE YOU PUT IN COMMENTS Helene. These funds will be spent for fuel to transport the tractor trailer and any left over will go toward fuel for other helicopters and trucks. My vet has that info which I will get and make sure that money goes to the appropriate folks.

And please continue to pray. I truly believe in miracles and God will help all we need to do is pray.

You guys are the hero’s not me. I’m only organizing this donation drop. All of you are the angels, and I’m so grateful to all of you. 💖. Use my phone number for Zelle 7042193559. Thank you again.

The following is from a friend of mine her name is Renee & she lives in Maui.
She called to encourage me to continue doing what doing. She also told me about what happened to this little island a year ago. I cannot tell you not to take the trip to deliver supplies, do what you feel needs to be done. But keep in mind you man get turned away. And be prepared for what you may see. Please be safe.

Here’s Renee’s comments:

As you know, we live on Maui. Last year our island was almost destroyed by fire. It was and is very, very bad. We lost an entire city! We had 8 fires the same day. Many homes, ranches, business were destroyed. Everyone in this planet wanted to help. People flew here from all over the world! No one knew what to do! People were turned away, upset, supplies left to rot, medicine not delivered, etc. No one...NO ONE knew what to do! People slandered us, the authorities, the government. People got very upset. So, please, PLEASE find out HOW to help before you do anything! Find out what, where and how! This is a massive tragedy and many loses so it takes a bit to get it going! PLEASE follow locals where you want to help and LISTEN! PLEASE pay attention to what is needed, where it's needed and how it's needed! I know what I am saying AS I LIVED IT. Our prayers and tears are upon you all...
