🚨HOT TOPIC: Pet Obesity Awareness Day🚨

Nearly 100 million pets in the U.S. are overweight or obese, making weight the leading health threat to our nation’s companion animals today.
Sharp Increase in Obesity Rates
Data reported by Nationwide, the country’s largest provider of pet health insurance, indicate that pet obesity is on the rise for the seventh consecutive year.

A whopping 59% of cats and 54% of dogs in the U.S. are classified as overweight or obese, according to October 2016 research conducted by the Association for Pet Obesity Prevention (APOP). For cats, 28% are overweight, and an additional 31% are “clinically obese”—more than 30% above ideal weight. For dogs, 34% are overweight and an additional 20% are obese.

These statistics reflect an alarming increase in clinical obesity in recent years. According to APOP statistics, the obesity rate for cats climbed from 22% in 2009 to the current 31% (2016). During this same time frame, the obesity rate in dogs rose from 9% in 2009 to 20% in both 2015 and 2016.

Obesity Shortens Lives
Just as in humans, excessive fat in pets increases the risk of often-preventable health conditions. In a 2018 press release, Nationwide reported the top obesity-related conditions found in dogs and cats based on 630,000 insured
pets.

Additionally, pet obesity has been linked with chronic inflammation and many forms of cancer. Obesity-related medical conditions decrease quality of life and may reduce life expectancy as much as two years.
APOP survey data bear this out, showing obesity to be most common in young adult/early-senior-aged pets, with incidence decreasing as pets age. Ultimately, obese pets tend to live shorter lives with more medical problems.

Causes of Obesity
Multiple factors have been implicated as causes of the current pet obesity epidemic, including:

• Lack of awareness. With obesity becoming so common in both humans and pets, pet parents don’t always recognize excessive weight in their pets. As a result, action steps to control portions and reduce pet weight may be delayed.

• Lack of compliance. It is often difficult for pet parents to comply with portion control or weight
maintenance programs, particularly in multi-pet homes.

• Genetic components, susceptibilities within certain breeds, single-gene mutations, and neuroendocrine pathways in terms of responses to food.

• Overfeeding through unmeasured feeding, free feeding, and food stealing.

• Feeding of high-calorie foods/treats and table scraps.

• Feeding for emotional reasons—showing love for the pet through extra feeding or by using food treats as frequent rewards.

• Lack of adequate exercise in proportion to calories consumed.

Controlling and Preventing Obesity
Steps that veterinarian/pet parent partners can take to prevent or reverse pet obesity:

• Schedule annual pet wellness exams with veterinarians to assess overall health, monitor weight, and establish optimal dietary programs to maintain or reduce weight.

• Begin healthy weight maintenance at spay/neuter.

• Maintain a consistent diet by controlling the amount of food given to each pet. Restrict calories
(portion control) as part of the veterinarian-prescribed feeding protocol.

• Avoid feeding table scraps and regulate treats given.

• Establish a regular and fun exercise routine.

• Replace food treats with more interactive activities, such as extra play time or holding and petting.

🐶This is so awesome! We just learned about the Wandering Rover program when we visited the Everett Animal Shelter last week. ❤️

What is Wandering Rover?
The Wandering Rover program was created to give our dogs a break from the shelter and help get them seen by potential adopters in the community. You can take a shelter pup for a walk, a hike, to a dog-friendly restaurant or for a pup-cup at a cafe! These outings will allow the dog to 'advertise' themselves while also providing valuable insight to shelter staff on how they interact in a public setting.

How it works
Wandering Rover allows members of our community to take a shelter dog out for few hours of fun and relaxation! An approved dog can be checked out for the day for a field trip to the beach, a car ride, a hike or walk, a visit to a dog-friendly restaurant or any other fun idea you may have. These trips greatly enrich the dogs' lives and give them some extra visibility in the community. Research shows that even just one day out of the shelter environment can greatly reduce stress and anxiety.

Wandering Rover FAQS
How can I take a dog for a Wandering Rover adventure?
Dogs are checked out on a first come, first served basis 10am to 10:30am on Saturdays, Sundays and Wednesdays. A majority of the dogs listed on the Adopt page will be available for a Wandering Rover day out, and some dogs may have special restrictions or requirements. Our hope is the dog will be out having fun for a minimum of 2 hours, and all dogs must be returned no later than 4pm. A staff member will help you select a dog that is a good fit. There are no guarantees upon arrival that you will be able to take a specific dog.

Do I need to bring anything or complete any training?
No training is required, but a staff member will help you select a dog that fits your vision for the day's activities, and you'll be sent with supplies including a leash, treats, poo bags, water bowl and a vest that lets people know the dog is available for adoption.

What can I do with my shelter dog for the day?
Go on a car ride to get a pup-cup
Take a walk
Go on a hike
Visit a dog-friendly restaurant, brewery or winery
Take a nap or watch a movie at your house
Introduce your dog to new human friends
Explore Everett's dog-friendly locations: Everett with Dogs | Everett Tourism, WA (visiteverett.com)
Visit the Everett Farmer's Market, Sundays 10:30am-3pm May-October
Walk through dog-friendly shopping centers such as Alderwood Mall and Marysville Outlet Mall
What can I not do with a shelter dog?
Take the dog off leash, all dogs must remain leashed at all times
Go to a dog park
Introduce the dog to other animals
Introduce the dog to young children (under 13 years of age)
If I fall in love, can I adopt my Wandering Rover partner?
If you feel like you met your soulmate after your day out it may be possible to finalize an adoption that same day! Please keep in mind there may be factors that prevent same day adoptions, including a previously scheduled meet and greet appointment. A staff member can chat with you when you return to the shelter.

Other requirements
Participants must show a valid ID with current address and a waiver will need to be signed before you meet your partner for the day. We want to ensure the safety of our dogs and the community, and do have a few rules:

All dogs are required to be on a leash at all times
Please do not introduce a dog to any other animals
Dogs should not be taken to dog parks
Share your Wandering Rover adventure!
After your day out, we will ask for a quick survey be filled out to help us gain more insight into your Wandering Rover partner. Shelter dogs often display different behavior outside the shelter and any feedback regarding leash walking, riding in a car, meeting new people, etc. will help us as we continue to try to find them a new home.

Please share your Wandering Rover photos on your social media and be sure to tag us, this helps reach new potential adopters and spread the word about our program!

We may also share your feedback and photos to our social media channels, feature the story in a newsletter, and will use the information you provide to better advertise the dog to potential adopters. We cannot thank you enough for capturing valuable information about our shelter dogs!

Since July the program is showing a 70% success rate.

💥Post a photo of your black dog! 💥

National Black Dog Day on October 1st encourages the adoption of a dog in the darker shades. Black dogs are less likely to be adopted for no other reason than their coloring. Regardless of behavior, size, breeding, personality, or age, the phenomenon persists. You’ll find their behavior is no different from dogs of a different color.

They come in short hair, long-haired and shaggy breeds, too. Do you like a floppy-eared pup? Every ear, tail, bark, and size comes in some beautiful shade of black. Big paws and little paws, too. Not only do they come in every shape and size, but they all need forever homes.

Breeding and previous care affect how they respond. If you are seeking to add a canine companion to your pack, consider adopting one with an ebony sheen. Their loyalty is no less or more than another dog, but they need a home, too. Allow a black dog to become your forever friend.

This day is all about loving our best four-legged friend with black fur. Did you know that black dogs are the least likely to be adopted? However, black dogs are just as lovable, loyal, and cuddly as any other color of dog!

In fact, here are some reasons to love black dogs:
They have a stunning colored coat
Their coat naturally looks and stays cleaner
They’re a family dog
They look dashing with accessories
They have a beautiful face
They’re great snuggle buddies
They’ll love you unconditionally
Who Founded National Black Dog Day?
The day was created by author Colleen Paige, who is also the founder of National Puppy Day, National Mutt Day, and National Cat Day.

What is the Hashtag for National Black Dog Day?
Use the hashtag when posting to social media.

Why Having a Black Dog Day is Important
As the parent of a paws-itively wonderful, charming, fun-loving black dog, I can personally vouch for the fact that black dogs are every bit as amazing as dogs of any other color. If you’ve ever shared your life with a black dog, you no doubt agree.

In many shelters, black dogs are continually passed over in favor of their lighter-colored shelter mates. As a matter of fact, black dogs are included in a group of harder-to-adopt pets on Petfinder that take an average of four times as long to find their fur-ever homes!

What is Black Dog Syndrome?
The challenge that black dogs face in getting adopted has been given a name — Black Dog Syndrome.

Although black cats are more commonly associated with bad luck, apparently black dogs are not immune to the effects of this superstition. Add to this the fact that these dogs are portrayed negatively in many books and movies (picture the fearsome black dogs in The Hounds of the Baskervilles or Harry Potter) and you can see why people might subconsciously steer away from adopting a dark-colored dog.

Why Do Black Dogs Get Passed By on Adoption Apps?
Since people who are looking to adopt frequently browse pictures of potential pets on shelter websites, appealing photographs go a long way towards helping dogs win the hearts of their future families. Since black dogs’ features frequently don’t stand out as well, people are less likely to want to adopt them based on their pictures alone.

Because of their color, black dogs can easily blend into the shadows in a kennel and won’t attract as much attention. Their facial features also may not be as easy to distinguish, masking their personalities, and making it harder for them to connect with potential dog parents. Black dogs are perceived as “ordinary.” Even though black may not be the most common color for a dog, many people feel that a black dog blends into the crowd.

Of course, we know that none of these reasons mean that black dogs aren’t amazing pets, but they do mean that these beautiful pooches have some obstacles to overcome. National Black Dog Day was founded to help raise awareness of the plight of black dogs waiting for adoption. Even if you aren’t looking to adopt, you can still help.

We love all animals of every color and want to make sure to give black dogs a round of “a-paws” on October 1st!
