“Sunsets are loved because they vanish. Flowers are loved because they go. The dogs of the field and the cats of the kitchen are loved because soon they must depart. These are not the sole reasons, but at the heart of morning welcomes and afternoon laughters is the promise of farewell. In the gray muzzle of an old dog we see goodbye. In the tired face of an old friend we read long journeys beyond returns.” —Ray Bradbury

Today is National Grief Awareness Day.
Grief after losing a beloved pet is real, deep, and often misunderstood. For many, saying goodbye to a pet means losing a best friend, a constant companion, and a source of unconditional love. We understand the quiet strength it takes to let go — and we honor the love behind every goodbye. If you're grieving, please know: you're not alone. Your sorrow is valid. Your pet mattered.

We invite you to share a photo, memory, or even just your pet’s name in the comments, as a way to remember and honor the ones who left paw prints on our hearts. ❤️

"Dogs' lives are short, too short, but you know that going in. You know the pain is coming, you're going to lose a dog, and there's going to be great anguish, so you live fully in the moment with her, never fail to share her joy or delight in her innocence, because you can't support the illusion that a dog can be your lifelong companion. There's such beauty in the hard honesty of that, in accepting and giving love while always aware that it comes with an unbearable price..." - Dean Koontz, The Darkest Evening of the Year

Losing a beloved pet is never easy. Talking with supportive friends, joining a grief group, or creating a memorial can help with the healing process.

It's normal to have questions and feel unsure during this time. What matters is that you gave your pet a life full of love, and choosing to let them go is often the kindest—though hardest—act.

As for whether dogs know they're being put to sleep, there’s no clear scientific answer. While dogs can sense pain or illness and may feel something is different, they likely don’t understand death or euthanasia. The process begins with a sedative to keep them calm, followed by medication that gently ends their life. They may feel sleepy and relaxed, but not fearful. Euthanasia is designed to be peaceful and painless, ensuring your pet’s final moments are filled with comfort, not fear.

🐾 Welcome, Dr. Maura Haley! 🐾

We’re so excited to welcome Dr. Maura Haley to the Final Journey family! 💜

Dr. Maura grew up in Massachusetts and recently graduated from Tufts University Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine. Her passion for gentle, end-of-life care began back in high school when she said goodbye to her own beloved dog, Riley, at home. That peaceful experience showed her just how meaningful an at-home goodbye can be, for both pets and their families and inspired the compassionate work she does today.

She’s now bringing that same care to our community, helping pets pass peacefully at home and supporting families every step of the way.

When she’s not caring for patients, you can find her hiking with her dogs, painting, or exploring her new surroundings with her two dogs and two cats. 🐶🐱

Please help us give Dr. Maura a warm welcome in the comments! 💬✨

When a beloved pet is no longer by your side, the little things they leave behind can feel so meaningful.
Consider turning their food or water bowl into a planter — a quiet way to let their memory grow beside you, every day. ❤️

Not long ago, a client shared a heartfelt way they chose to honor their senior pet. They organized a family photo shoot while he was still enjoying life. The grandkids crafted party hats, and together they celebrated him and all of the joy he had brought to their lives. Planning something like this not only creates lasting memories with a cherished pet and those who love them, but also results in beautiful photos to look at when they are no longer by our side. ❤️

"Because dogs live in the present. Because dogs don't hold grudges. Because dogs let go of all of their anger daily, hourly, and never let it fester. They absolve and forgive with each passing minute. Every turn of a corner is the opportunity for a clean slate. Every bounce of a ball brings joy and the promise of a fresh chase." -Steven Rowley, Lily and the Octopus

Our Story

The decision to euthanize a companion is always difficult. The option to be at home in a quiet, loving environment can make a big difference for families who are uncomfortable with bringing their loved one to a veterinary hospital. From knowing their companion suffers extreme stress and fear at the vet, having a large dog that is incapacitated and cannot make the trip, or simply because being at home is the only way families can imagine making this transition, we know and understand your needs.

Dr. Kristen Klie graduated veterinary school from Colorado State University in 1996. She has worked as a relief veterinarian in over 30 hospitals throughout Connecticut and has earned the respect and trust throughout the veterinary community that allows other doctors to feel comfortable referring their beloved clients to her service, knowing they are in good hands. Devoted to expanding her work of service, compassion and diversity, Dr. Klie attended Hartford Seminary’s interfaith chaplaincy program. It was a natural progression that her passion for veterinary medicine turned into a calling for “Final Journey”. This unique perspective allows for deeper connection and care for all her clients.
