We are very pleased to announce the newest addition to MVA - Dr. Jin Wong. Dr. Wong started seeing appointments yesterday, and we are so excited to have him as a member of our team!

Born and raised in Malaysia, Dr. Wong attended Oberlin College in Ohio before completing his veterinary medicine degree at Colorado State University. Following that, Dr. Wong completed a small animal rotating internship in San Francisco. He has since practiced General Practice and Emergency Medicine with a particular interest in soft tissue surgery, translational research between humans and animals, and chronic medical illnesses.

Dr. Wong and his family (wife, baby toddler and "old" baby dog) recently moved here from Baltimore, after getting their fill of crab and Old Bay seasoning. As a Malaysian Chinese, Dr. Wong is fluent in English and Chinese (slightly rusty), as well as Malay (quite a bit rusty), and can also speak a touch of Spanish when needed. Dr. Wong also loves soccer (go Manchester United) and has previously lived in India for two years!

MVA is very excited to announce our newest team member — Dr. Samantha Mershon. Dr. Mershon will start seeing appointments on Monday, May 8, and we are extremely happy to welcome her to our team!

Dr. Mershon graduated with her BS in biochemistry from Juniata University. From there, she attended the University of Prince Edward Island, receiving her DVM in 2021. Following graduation, Dr. Mershon returned to her home in Wexford and began working in private practice. She has a special interest in reptile medicine but loves all aspects of general practice. Dr. Mershon enjoys applying fear free techniques and does her best to practice the most up-to-date evidence-based medicine to help improve her patients’ quality of life.

Outside of work, Dr. Mershon lives with 2 cats - Bella and James, a lab mix named Lily, and a corn snake named Marv. She enjoys reading, traveling, and hiking with her dog.

While she has actually been with us since the first of the year, we would like to take this opportunity to officially welcome Dr. Deanna Purvis to MVA. She has already proven to be an amazing part of the team, and we are so happy to have her on-board!

Dr. Purvis was born in Vancouver, Washington, but despite her west coast beginnings, she spent many formative years in Pittsburgh, making it feel like home. She received her B.S. in Biology from Penn State University in 1983 and is a 1988 graduate of the University of Pennsylvania's School of Veterinary Medicine. She continued at the University of Pennsylvania for her internship in small animal medicine and surgery. Next, she completed two years of residency training in small animal surgery at the University of Tennessee. During her surgical residency, she realized her passion for care of the critically ill/ICU patients. She was accepted into the residency training program for Emergency and Critical Care at the Animal Emergency Center (Milwaukee, WI). Dr. Purvis earned Diplomate status in the American College of Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care (ACVECC) in 1994.

Since 1994, Dr. Purvis has directed emergency/critical care departments in Portland, Oregon; Springfield, Virginia; and was a consultant for the Regional Emergency Animal Care Hospital in Asheville, North Carolina. She and two colleagues founded the California Animal Referral & Emergency Hospital in July 2003 - establishing Santa Barbara California's first veterinary specialty hospital.

In 2005 Dr. Purvis completed training at CuraCore Academy and was certified to perform veterinary acupuncture, and in 2010 she received training in Traditional Chinese Herbal Medicine through the Chi Institute. She continues her training in Chinese Medicine and other alternative modalities as well as western medicine. She enjoys providing clients and patients an integrative approach to health care by combining eastern and western medical approaches to provide for optimal patient care and comfort. She looks forward to joining her colleagues in Fear Free training certification.

Dr. Purvis returned to Pittsburgh in 2013, is married and shares her home with her spouse, and two dogs - a golden retriever and a lab mix breed. In addition to her deep love of animals, she's an avid student of Buddhism, and enjoys reading, travel, gardening and walking.

The continuously evolving issues of COVID-19 have impacted all of us. The safety, health, and well-being of our staff, clients, and community is MVA’s number one priority as we strive to continue to provide needed health care to our patients. As such, our policies are also temporarily changing in light of the surge of cases in our area.

For the month of January, we will resume our curbside protocols at MVA. Our hope is to get our clients back in the building as quickly and safely as possible. As such, after January, we will reassess the local infection rates and adjust our protocols as needed.

In a happy and random turn of events, we had a streak of 5 Golden Retriever patients in a row today — starting with 13-year-old Sammy & 3-year-old Brandi and then ending with 14-week-old Khloe who unexpectedly reunited with her littermates Dash & Ruby in our parking lot! These blonde faces brightened our days, and we had to share our good fortune with you all! 🌟 🐶 🌟

We have been celebrating National Veterinary Technician Week for the past few days at MVA, and these professionals definitely deserve being celebrated.

Veterinary technicians come to this profession to help both animals and those who love them. They wear so many hats in any given day — educator, shoulder to cry on, phlebotomist, puppy wrangler, anesthetist, hospice nurse, and so much more — and do it all with kindness and compassion. They are definitely superheroes!

We thank you for all you do for all of our MVA patients and their families. You are so appreciated! 🐾 🐾 🐾

We don’t know if the hay ride, the corn maze, or the s’mores were the highlight for the kids during our night out with our amazing team, but we do know we all had a blast and already look forward to coming back next year.
