This luckily isn’t something we need to worry about *too* much, but it’s so worth the read. I personally have to give comfort grooms in stages to one of my own who can’t stand for very long anymore. It’s a very hard conversation to have but so necessary.

Normally it's all memes and jokes here at the Foolery but I want to talk about something close to my heart.

Senior Pets and Comfort Cuts

If you own a senior pet, please LISTEN to your groomer and take what they say to heart. No one wants to send home a pet looking unfinished. Senior pets, and even younger ones who may have serious health and behavior issues, we can't always make them look show ready. And that's nobody's fault.
It's not your fault, your pet's fault or your groomer's fault.

Yes, I know Max has always been good for grooming for all his life, but now he's 16. He has arthritis. He may be going blind and/or deaf. His skin is more sensitive to tangles being pulled. His mouth is sore from bad teeth and gums. He may have the beginning stages of dementia. He may not be able to stand for long periods. So we are going to do the best we can to make him comfortable without putting him through anything unnecessary. I understand you always loved his long beard or fluffy tail, but he cannot tolerate the time it takes to get those areas dry and combed out completely. Let's tighten it up for him.
I know his coat is curly today. I had to kennel dry him because the other dryers were just too much for him to handle and he was panicking and at risk of seizure.
I am sorry I cut his eyelashes too short. Because of his deteriorating eyesight, he isn't tolerating things near his face much anymore and moves a lot.

And if your groomer says they can no longer groom your dog and suggest a vet groomer, listen to them. Even if your vet gives you a letter saying your dog is safe to groom. No disrespect to vets, but most don't know what it's like to actually groom a dog. And your letter doesn't erase liability for the groomer in the event your dog has a medical crash or injury. At a vet office, if your dog goes into cardiac arrest, they can get immediate attention.

Having been in this business for a couple of decades, I have had several dogs die at salons I worked at. The business paid for necropsies and every one returned with preexisting health conditions the owners either knew about or didn't. If your groomer is telling you to take it to a vet, they are doing it because they care more about your pet's safety than your money. Just think about that. And don't assume cause the cut isn't perfect, you deserve to pay less for the work. Your groomer probably put more work into that cut now than they ever did with the perfect cut.

When you dog has serious health and behavior issues, you don't get the privilege to be nitpicky about every facet of the groom. I know it's a hard pill to swallow, but put your pets needs above vanity. Your pet will not care if they eyelashes are short or the entire underside is shaved.

And when your senior pet gets home they are going to be tired and maybe even sore. This doesn't mean they were mishandled. Place your older self into their paws for a moment. Imagine you were very old and unable to stand for long periods, while someone is running brushes, combs and clippers all over you, picking up your foot so you have to balance on one leg to clip your toe nails. Look how many elderly people choose shorter, easier to manage hairstyles. Because it's too hard to manage their other styles and longer hair.

Your groomer puts your pet first, respect them for it.

It’s that time of year again! When the weather gets colder most people want a longer length to keep their pup warm. However what many don’t know is the longer the length, the more often your pet needs to come in. They also need daily brushing.

The vast majority of the time when clients tell us they’ve been brushing at home, they mean only the hair down the spine or the back of the head. These places almost never mat! Most of the time when we tell a client their dog is matted we mean behind their ears where they get scratched, under collar/harness/clothes, their legs, armpits, and chest. You have to thoroughly get all nooks and crannies with both a brush AND a comb.

We also do not recommend bathing at home or copious amounts of swimming on coated dogs as any water will shrink and tighten existing mats. Please leave bathing to us! If you have any questions regarding your pet’s care don’t hesitate to reach out! We love to work with you to keep them the length you desire.

Attention followers!!

It’s that time of year again. From today to the end of December we have 86 appointment slots open to book ☺️

This seems like a lot until you realize there were 900 total slots that were originally available. 😳 We are diligently trying to get all our clients on the books so if you haven’t yet looked ahead for the holidays, we urge you to do so! We are usually booked for the remainder of the year by Halloween, however this year we’re on track to be fully booked by October 1st. Please do not wait!

A post we’ve been meaning to make for awhile:

As a groomer, we get asked A LOT about a**l glands. It is often viewed as something that is our job to just do.

While we palpate and check every single client, we do not automatically express glands on every single client. We will try a gentle external expression, but if it doesn’t come out easily you will need to see your veterinarian.

Trust us-if your dog *requires* frequent gland expression there is a problem! They may need a dietary change, it may be due to genetics, there could be a blockage or an infection, or there could even be damage due to repeated expressings. We see our most common gland issues on overweight/obese clients. Either way, groomers are unable to do internal expressions in CA which is the most thorough method of relieving full glands. At that point, it becomes a medical issue. If you suspect your pet is having an a**l gland problem, your first stop is the vet, not the groomer!

The rumors are true, we are opening again!

Due to continued risk we are asking for one client/family at a time in the lobby. If you arrive and someone is already being helped, please kindly wait your turn outside. We also are still requiring masks for all in person transactions. We will continue offering curbside service for now until forever so if you don’t wish to come inside please continue to contact us upon arrival as you have been and we will happily come out to greet you 🙂

A reminder of our inside business policies for all:

-We do not allow clients to stay. It is quite distracting to your pet and extremely difficult to safely handle your pet with their owner nearby. Please do not return until you have received notice that your pet is finished! We will always call or text as your dog is finished and you are welcome to contact us as well if you’d like to check on time frame. If you do return early and your pet is being worked on it is policy to hand them to you as you arrive due to increased safety concerns once your pet becomes aware of your presence.

-Please keep your pets leashed inside our lobby with a properly fitting harness/collar (if you cannot fit 2 fingers under it is too tight, if you can fit more than 4 fingers it is too loose!) and a regular leash. If a flexi-lead must be used please be sure it is locked so your pet stays near.

-We realize our clients are all adorable and swoon worthy but please try not to distract or baby talk pets currently being worked on as you drop off. Our goal is a calm, peaceful environment for all and we thank you so much for understanding and playing your part! We can’t wait to see you!
