Day 31 of 31 To Another Year

So we have come to last post of 2024. And we usually reserve that last photo of an adopted cat. This year it is Kolton.

Kolton was with us a few years. He originally came in and was very angry/scared/nervous, you name it. He may have even expressed that anger to staff and others (myself being one). But, as years went by he started to realize we loved him and we were not scary. He became a staple at the shelter. Many volunteers and staff; both current and past always told him Kolton this is gonna be your day.

And that day finally happened for him. He found his furever home. Look at him now living his best life, which is what he deserves.

So once again thank you to all of our supporters, volunteers, friends, family, partners, rescue groups, shelters, staff and anyone else who helped us this year. We would not have been able to adopt out a final total of 138 cats in 2024 without you. Here is hoping to another wonderful year to adopt some cats. HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Day 30 of 31 Patience

We here at the Montclair Township Animal Shelter are lucky that we are not crammed for space. Unfortunately, due to overcrowding and demand of multiple animals coming in some shelters out there must euthanize animals just for space. And some of these animals tend to be the one that have stayed at a place for a long time or just take a bit longer to open up.

We have never had to do that and are lucky to house the animal until it gets adopted. We try our hardest in trying to promote or advertise some of our longer residence and try everything in our power to get them a home. Sometimes the people are not serious; the cat may not show well; adopters may have an unrealistic timeline; and so many more reasons.

We do not give up on any animal and we continue to give them the best care and love we can offer all the way up until they are walking out our door. This could take a day, weeks, months, or years we are committed.

Day 29 of 31 Feel Good Pet

Owning a pet can provide a myriad of health benefits to the you.

Here are some benefits that are specific to cats:

· Lower stress & anxiety
o Just by petting your cat your day can turn around. Having a bad day? Go and pet your cat. Scientific evidence also supports that a cat’s purr can calm your nervous system and lower your blood pressure.
· Improve your cardiovascular health
o Cat owners have been reported to carry a lower risk for heart disease and stroke.

· Prevent allergies.
o Cat hair is considered one of the most prevalent allergies amongst people. However, if a child is exposed to cats within the first few years of life, they tend to develop an immune system that not only combats cat allergies, but other allergens as well.

· Reduce feelings of loneliness.
o They offer an unconditional love that can be equal or sometimes greater than many human friends and confidants.

· Maintain a routine.
o Having a cat who will “wake” you up by meowing or pawing at you for food. This helps you maintain a daily routine to wake up around the same time and get a start on your day. The body does better with routines than waking up all different times each day.

Day 28 of 31 Bowl v. Fountain

Cats descended from desert animals that roamed northern Africa. The African wildcat is their closet relative and lives in an environment where water is rare. Cats absorb a large amount of the fluids they need through their food. A mouse, the cat’s oldest prey, contain up to 70% water. Unfortunately, since domestication most cats are not eating mice, but instead kibble. Dry food has too little moisture so a cat must offset the deficit by drinking more. A cat who does not drink enough can cause it urine to be concentrated, which can lead to urinary stones and kidney diseases. Sufficient fluid intake is important, but how do you encourage this?

You have two options a standard bowl or a water fountain. Water fountains come in many sizes, designs and prices. They are simple to install and only need to be plugged into an outlet. Standar bowls can come in ceramic, stainless steel or plastic. They also can come with stands or you can get matching ones for their dry/wet food.

Cats generally do not seek out their water bowl, however, water in motion attracts the cats. Curiosity, gets the best of them and they go over to investigate and take a few gulps. The water in a fountain is usually fresher than that of a bowl and is fortified with oxygen. You can however, make the ordinary water bowl attractive by providing clean, fresh water daily. Also putting a few bowls throughout the house encourages your cat to take little sips here and there.

Both water bowls and fountains are only hygienic if cleaned regularly. Stale water and algae can become health risk and ruin the taste. The classic water bowl is very easy to clean when it comes to this. Usually made out of ceramic, metal or plastic it can be washed by hand or thrown in a dishwasher. A fountain is a bit more complicated. You usually have to take it apart and be careful not to wet any of the wiring or electrical parts.

Regardless of what you decide for your cat just make sure they are consuming water it is vital for their health.
