In honor of Women’s History Month, each week we will be highlighting some of the most influential female farmers 🧑‍🌾 and environmentalists 🌿in American history.

This week, let’s learn about Karen Washington! Washington is a farmer and food justice activist who is still active today!

🌿She co-founded Black Urban Growers in 2010, which is an organization that empowers and supports Black agriculturists in both urban and rural areas. Washington also co-founded La Familia Verde Garden Coalition, which helped create the City Farms Market, which puts fresh produce🍅🥬 into the Bronx.

🌱Washington has also served on many community boards, including Why Hunger, Farm School NYC, Greenworks Cooperative, Soul Fire Farm, and many others where she brings her passion for food justice to the forefront.

She is also currently the co-owner of Rise and Root Farm in Chester, NY, where she is an organic grower🌿.

She has received many awards for her work in the food justice field!

Boyd owns a farm in Virginia and grows soybeans, corn, and wheat, while also raising cattle. Over the years, he has been featured in many national medias and was considered Secretary of Agriculture under President Obama! 🌾✨

🥬 Packed with vitamins, fiber, and crunch, cabbage is a standout crop at the farm! 💪✨ People all around the world use this crop in a unique and special way!

🌍 Middle Easterners incorporate this crop in a dish called “Malfoof”, stuffed cabbage rolls filled with rice, meat, and spices.

This week, let’s learn about Frederick McKinley Jones.

Frederick McKinley Jones revolutionized food transport by inventing the first mobile refrigeration system. 🧊 Before his invention, food was kept cold with ice and salt, which didn’t last very long.

In 1938, Jones created a compact, durable cooling unit that kept food fresh in trucks, trains, ships, and planes, which made fresh produce available nationwide all year round. 🍎🚚

He later led a refrigeration company, and became the first Black American to receive the National Medal of Technology. 🏅

His invention changed the food industry forever and still impacts global food distribution today!

Dear Friends and Supporters,

The MCF Team would like to personally invite you to a special Fundraiser Concert for Montclair Community Farms at Tierney’s Tavern on Saturday, February 22, at 8 PM with live music from Rewildersmusic 🎸✨

This isn’t just a night of great music—it’s a chance for us to come together as a community and rally behind the work we do at MCF.

With recent cuts to DEI and climate change funding, organizations like ours are being hit hard. But, I know that real change starts with people who care—people like you. MCF has always been more than a farm; it’s a place where we fight for food access, sustainability, and education. Your support at this fundraiser will help us keep these essential programs going, ensuring that fresh food, environmental learning, and urban agriculture remain accessible to all. 💚

Join the MCF Team for a night of music, connection, and action.

Let’s show that when institutions step back, our community steps up.🌙✨

— With gratitude,
MCF Team 💚

🌿JOIN US IN THE GREENHOUSE!🌿

🌱We know that access to green spaces is incredibly important for our well-being, and this season we are excited to open our doors and welcome our Seniors a bit earlier than normal!

🪴Join us in the Van Vleck House & Gardens Turner Greenhouse for our free program “Senior Wellness Friday”! Each week participants will have the opportunity to join the MCF team to learn how to care for our tiny seedlings. 🌱

🧑‍🌾The greenhouse will provide a warm escape from the chill of winter, give us the opportunity to get our hands dirty, and help build community! 👨‍🌾

🌸Together, we will have fun starting the seeds that will provide sustenance for our community members and make new friends while doing so.

In honor of Black History Month, each week we will be highlighting some of the most influential Black farmers 👨🏾‍🌾 and environmentalists 🌿 in American history.

This week, let’s learn about Thomas Monroe Campbell.

Campbell was the first local educator in the Cooperative Extension System that dedicated over 50 years to helping African American farmers in the South. 🌱

Campbell traveled around rural communities in Alabama with a Jesup Agricultural Wagon, which is basically a farm on wheels! 🚜🌱This special wagon was packed with tools, seeds, fertilizer, and supplies to help farmers learn better planting techniques and improve their crops.

Instead of waiting for farmers to come to a school, Campbell brought the school to them, teaching hands-on farming skills right in their own communities. 🌾👨🏾‍🌾

Thanks to the Jesup Agricultural Wagon, Black farmers learned new and better ways to grow their crops, which helped them farm more successfully, support their families, and build stronger communities. 🌱🚜✨
His legacy continues to inspire sustainable farming and education today. 💚

MCF puts the “unity” in community!

Let’s hear from one of our coalition members, Angelica, who is the Executive Director of the Montclair History Center. Here’s what she has to say:

“For more than 12 years, the Montclair History Center has proudly collaborated with Montclair Community Farms to create a meaningful impact in our community.

Montclair Community Farms transformed a previously underutilized expanse of land into a vibrant educational farm on our property that not only fosters agricultural knowledge but also plays a crucial role in addressing food insecurity in Montclair and surrounding communities.

This thriving farm offers fresh produce to those in need, ensuring that community members have access to healthy, nutritious, and affordable food.

Through its mobile farm stand, diverse volunteer opportunities, and engaging educational programs, Montclair Community Farms empowers individuals of all ages to explore sustainable farming practices while deepening the community’s connection to the land.

This initiative is driven by a genuine passion and a steadfast commitment to enhancing our food systems, particularly for those who are most impacted by food insecurity.

By fostering hands-on learning and community involvement, Montclair Community Farms not only cultivates knowledge but also nurtures a sense of belonging and responsibility toward our shared environment.”

MCF puts the “unity” in community!

Today we are highlighting two of our many amazing partners: STEAM URBAN and the Human Needs Food Pantry.

Here’s what Fallon from STEAM URBAN has to say:

“Montclair Community Farms has been a dynamic resource for our Urban Farm in Newark NJ. For the last two years we have relied heavily on their seedling donation to get us growing and starting for the season.

A Healing Sanctuary grows over 500 pounds of food each season, supporting all types of community members in our 1/4th acre lower broadway space, and is a learning and educational resource for many growers.

Without MCF's support we would not be able to have such a robust season or support our community. Being a small nonprofit we don't have much funding, so this donation is our lifeline.

Along with their donation, they have provided training, resources, helping hands, and continued support of our mission and goals. I am deeply impacted by their work, admire what they do, and am full from their partnership.

MCF brings such a vital resource to our Urban farming community and we at STEAM URBAN are just so grateful and thankful for them.”

Now let’s hear what Christina from Human Needs Food Pantry of Montclair, New Jersey has to say:

“The Human Needs Food Pantry has been partnering with Montclair Community Farms for a few years. Twice a year in the summer and fall the MCF comes to the HNFP to distribute a box of fresh, locally grown fruits and vegetables to our clients.

Our clients are always excited to see the mobile farm stand at the HNFP. They enjoy interacting with the many volunteers and young interns who often carry the boxes of fresh fruits and vegetables to the cars for them.

The small farm cooperative makes a big impact on those clients of the HNFP that participate in their bi-annual distribution.”

MCF puts the “unity” in community!

Today we are hearing from our Education Coordinator, Wolfgang. Let’s hear what he has to say:

“Montclair Community Farms is a place where everyone comes to grow, and I’ve found this to be evident nowhere more than in my own life. I began my time on the farm as an intern in the Spring of 2023, where I was introduced to the basics of agriculture and environmentalism through communal work between the interns, volunteers, and staff on the farm.

When I was fortunate enough to be hired on as MCF’s education coordinator, I carried these values with me as I was given the space to grow as an aspiring educator. My students’ interest and excitement about the world around them has been the biggest source of inspiration for any lesson I teach, and I am so grateful to have been able to learn with them this year.

With our educational programs we’ve been able to reach students through classes and field trips on our farm, as well as in after school programs, and we hope to reach even more this coming year.

Your support means our continued ability to nurture knowledge of and appreciation for the outdoors in kids of all ages. We are especially grateful for the way that your donations allow us to provide these camps, classes, and activities to kids whose families would otherwise not have access to them through our scholarship programs.”
