Old Oak Farm

Old Oak Farm We are excited to pursue this new venture and hope you can find enjoyment from our journey!

Located in northeast Alabama, our farm is slowly transitioning into a sustainable space where we can raise our own food in a environmentally sound and healthy way.

Zebedee, our homegrown farmhand, loves all the animals. Currently, he’s enthralled with the chickens and is DESPERATE to catch one of our flighty hens… but as a faithful chicken lady, I discourage any chasing. I do appreciate Z’s enthusiasm and determination to explore, though, and I’m thrilled to let him gently pet the cats, dogs, and horses. So glad he’s finally at an age where he can enjoy being outside, toddling around, and learning to love the outdoors like I did as a kiddo.

Glenda and Susan are getting closer to calving! They both look so chunky and do love a good snack. A few weeks ago, I took them some sweet feed as a treat and Glenda about ran me over (literally). I yelled, “No! Bad cow!” and whacked her in the head with the bucket. She’s kept her distance ever since, to my vast relief. 😅 My family owned cattle when I was younger, and I’ve only been charged a couple times… and I’ve never enjoyed it. I threatened Glenda by telling her how delicious she looks, which I’m sure made all the difference.

Life on the farm recently. Abraham, our ever-present companion. He follows us everywhere, but he prefers getting to ride with us instead. 😅 Then there’s little Zebedee, our future farmer (or not!🤣) constantly being the cutest thing we’ve ever seen. Followed by our newest acquisition, the heifers. I’ve been gallivanting through the pasture every day calling, “here cow-ey!” in an attempt to ‘tame’ them. By that, I mean, maybe one day they’ll tolerate my presence with indifference. 😂 They’re actually doing so much better and I’m able to stand within 10 ft of them without them freaking out. Yay progress!

Newest additions to the farm: Glenda and Susan. We picked them up today and they seem to be settling in really well and respecting the fence… but if y’all see a couple of black cows with jumbo ears run by, holler at me. 😂

Some of my favorite views on the farm this summer: the last bits of sun peaking through the trees (view from the back porch), grass… lots of grass! And the view from my tractor overlooking our neighbor’s beautiful cattle farm. ☀️

🔥HUGE LIFE UPDATE🔥

We’re moving back to Montevallo! As many of you know, my parents own a farm there and it has always been my •dream• to help run the farm and live close to family. Brian and I have made some incredible friends in North Alabama and we are so sad to leave those who have become like family. If you are ever struggling to find friends and community, don’t give up, because the good people are still out there! You know who you are, friends, and we are so grateful you stepped out and invited us into your lives! 💙

The next big step is making some finishing touches to our home and property before we put it on the market. If you or someone you know is looking for a small farm in the Horton, AL area, please keep us in mind. More details coming soon!!!

We trailered my horses down on Sunday, which is where I took these pics. As you can see, the kids are overjoyed to have new friends and a great big pasture to explore. 😅

Weird to think that this time last year, I was thinking how cool it would be to own a couple chickens… Now, a year later, I’m getting between 18-20 eggs each DAY!! 👀 On that note, I have colorful, clean, farm fresh eggs available.

Everybody, meet our new horse! She’s a 9-year-old mare registered with the TWHBEA. We haven’t settled on a name yet, these things take time. 😅 She’s a former show horse but has most recently been used for pleasure riding and trails. We bought her to use as a trail horse. She’s incredibly smooth and I’m loving having a TWH in my life again. 😍 Per all the horses I seem to accumulate, she’s going to need some work. Seems like nobody has ever made her walk on a loose rein. Instead, she acts like she’s just been held in check with lots of pressure. Today, we worked on slowing down with a ton of circles, with much praising and pats when she stopped and stood still. Then I would move her out again and ask for a walk. She picked it up very quickly! When I went to try her before we decided to buy her, I recognized she needed work, probably more than I’d intended to deal with… but at the same time, I could see she’s a quick learner so I figured she was worth the gamble. I’m loving her so far, despite her imperfections, and I’m excited to see what I can do with her! 💜

Baby Hugo is growing up so fast! 😭 He’s finally losing some of the crazy puppy behavior (jumping, chewing, racing around like a maniac, etc. 😅) and is starting to slow down and act like a distinguished young gentleman. He follows us everywhere and is developing a “big dog” bark. He loves sitting beside you and getting scratches. So happy with this boy and feel so grateful to have him on our farm! Also, isn’t he the cutest?! 🙈

Who else is a fan of “glow-ups”? 🙋🏻‍♀️🙊😅 First picture is Norbert the day after I bought him, 2 years ago. The next pics, I took today! When I brought Norbert home, he was well-behaved, but not really a personable horse. Once he settled into his new surroundings and realized he wasn’t leaving, 😅 he became the sweetest, goofiest horse! He’s so well-behaved and fun to ride. One of those “once in a million” horses. So grateful to own this big boy! Measured today and he’s 15.3 1/2 hands and 1257 lbs. 😳 (not big for most of you, but to someone who grew up riding 14 hand horses, he’s a giant.) 💜

Don’t mind me… just popping in to show everyone that I grew, processed, and cooked this beautiful bird! 🐓

Anybody looking for their dream horse? My friend's gelding is up for grabs! Meet Comanche, a 5-year-old registered ApHC gelding. He is a PROJECT for the experienced rider. He has tons of training and is an incredible athlete. He is being sold because he will buck if not ridden consistently. This is his only flaw and the ONLY reason he is available! Comanche would be perfect for someone who wants an everyday using horse. Grab him before he heads off to a consignor for tuning up!

👉🏻 Unpopular opinion: ☀️ I love Mondays. ☀️ Anybody else? I enjoy being able to start a new week with new goals and a refreshed mind from weekend relaxing.

💥 Pictured is Alfonzo, my top Brahma roo. He took longer than my other roosters to mature, but turned out the biggest, fluffiest, and sweetest. If you want chickens, but aren’t sure which breed to try first, go for Brahmas. They are cute, fluffy, and love being held! 💥
