WINTER IS COMING! Dangerous temperatures (for humans, but especially our four-legged friends) are headed our way. BE RESPONSIBLE. Bring your pets inside, if you can. If it is absolutely not possible, you must provide proper housing and extra resources to keep your pets warm. Leaving dogs outside during freezing weather, without proper shelter, warmth, and water IS ILLEGAL!
As some of you may have heard, word has been spreading on the streets about our investigators being busy. Over the last 2 years, our investigators have seen a drastic increase of cases of neglect and abuse. This won't do! Our investigators will do everything in their power to help you be the best pet owners that you can be. BUT, when you aren't willing to put the effort in, your animals suffer, and that becomes a problem.
The Montgomery Humane Officer Division, partnering with the Montgomery Humane Society, will do everything we can to help you keep Montgomery's furry friends warm and safe during the freezing temps. We will be conducting an increased number of welfare checks in the coming days. If we can help, we will do our best to help supply resources to individuals, while our supplies last. The catch is that you follow up on your end. With the resources that will be provided, there won't be any excuses for your animals to not make it through the cold weather.
LET US BE VERY CLEAR. If you have an animal that is kept outside and you do not heed the warnings, or take advantage of the resources that are being made available to anyone residing in Montgomery County, you WILL be prosecuted to the FULLEST extent of the law (Animal Cruelty IS A FELONY!).
If you see something, say something. If you see an animal being kept outside without proper shelter/resources and can safely talk to the owner, please offer assistance by informing them of the resources being provided.

We want to give a huge shout out to Alabama Spay+Neuter for driving all the way to Montgomery at dawn to help us get caught up on our spay and neuters! We send anywhere from 40-60 animals each week all throughout our city. When we backlog, it negatively impacts the health and behavior of animals in our care! We are sure next week we will face new challenges but as for today, we can breathe a sigh of relief knowing we are all caught up and these fur babies stand a higher chance to go home!

Ever wonder what our animal services officers do in between calls? Despite driving hundreds of miles everyday while witnessing the unimaginable , they often use their downtime to make a friend.

Holly, a 3 year old was surrendered to us due to not fault of her own. As with most chihuahuas, she has really struggled to acclimate to all the stimulation at the shelter. Little moments like this will bring her comfort and teach her that we wish to help and not harm her. We commend this stand up officer for taking this time out with her and hopefully with enough consistency, she will be up for adoption soon.

Don’t forget to come see us this Saturday at the shelter from 6-8. We will be serving “catinis” and finger foods! Tickets can be purchased at the door!

The Montgomery Humane Society will be closed until Saturday July 27th due to a case of the Canine Influenza Virus (H3N2). We currently have over 40 symptomatic dogs in our facility.

Dogs in the Adoption Center will have to be placed under isolation and will not be available for adoption for 28 days. Adoptions of exposed dogs will need to be halted for a period of four weeks. We will take the next few days to navigate our space and isolate any exposed animals. We will also be disinfecting other areas so we can safely and ethically house new emergent intakes. Cat adoptions will resume this Saturday as normal.

The canine influenza virus mainly spreads from infected dogs to other dogs through respiratory droplets (coughing, sneezing, barking or nuzzling) and through contaminated surfaces and clothing. It is not known to be transmissible to people. However, people can spread the virus to other dogs via their clothing, equipment or hands.

The symptoms of canine influenza are cough, runny nose, eye discharge, fever, lethargy and poor appetite. The signs range in severity between no signs at all and severe illness resulting in death.

If your dog is showing any symptoms of influenza, contact your veterinarian immediately for assessment and early supportive treatment.

Most dogs recover within two-to-three weeks, but some will develop secondary bacterial infections that can lead to more severe illness.

MHS is still accepting essential intakes during our temporary closure. Essential intakes include:
* Sick and injured animals.
* Dogs that pose a threat to public safety.
Residents who find a lost pet are asked not to bring the animal to the shelter for the safety of those animals. Tips on locating the owner of lost pets can be found on our website at www.montgomeryhumane.com

MHS will provide finders of lost pets who are willing to foster, with the necessary supplies as available to care for the animal until the owner can be located. MHS can list found dogs on our website with the hope of assisting with reunification.

The canine influenza vaccine is not typically required and is not considered a core vaccine for all dogs. However, with cases occurring in the Montgomery area, speak with your veterinarian about having your dog vaccinated.

Additional precautions to take to keep your dog safe:
* Limit direct contact with other dogs when on walks. Do not allow them to sniff one another.
* Avoid using shared toys or dishes.
* Get advice from your personal veterinarians, daycares and boarding facilities.

Please be patient with us as we navigate this situation. It is our primary goal to remain accessible to the animals in the community we love and serve. Minimizing our population as we work diligently to reduce the loss of life in our current population gives us the best chance of minimizing its spread in our community.

If you have the ability to isolate and medicate for 28 days, please don’t hesitate to reach out to foster. Foster applications can be filled out on our website.
