Did you know? Nearly 60% of dental disease in pets hides beneath the gumline, where the naked eye can't see! That's why dental radiographs (X-rays) are a crucial part of every dental procedure.

🦷 What do dental radiographs reveal?
✅ Hidden tooth root infections
✅ Bone loss from periodontal disease
✅ Fractures beneath the gums
✅ Tooth resorption (especially in cats!)
✅ Abscesses and cysts

Without X-rays, serious dental problems can go undetected, leading to pain, infection, and even organ damage over time. That’s why at My Family Vet, we take full-mouth radiographs to ensure your pet’s smile is as healthy as it looks!

🩺 Regular dental care = a longer, healthier life for your furry friend!

Heartworm Prevention: A Year-Round Necessity in Texas

Texas’ warm climate means mosquitoes are active all year long—and where there are mosquitoes, there’s a risk of heartworm disease. Heartworms are transmitted through mosquito bites, and once infected, pets face serious health complications, including heart and lung damage.

The good news? Heartworm disease is 100% preventable with consistent monthly prevention. Skipping even one dose can leave your pet unprotected, so stay on top of prevention year-round to keep your furry friend safe!

Need to stock up? Give us a call or stop by the clinic! 🐾💙

🦴🐶 One of the most common orthopedic injuries in dogs is a cranial cruciate ligament (CCL) tear—the canine equivalent of an ACL tear in humans. This injury can cause pain, limping, and long-term joint instability if left untreated.

🏥 A Tibial Plateau Leveling Osteotomy (TPLO) is one of the best surgical options for repairing a torn CCL, helping dogs regain mobility and reduce arthritis risk. Most dogs return to their normal, happy, active selves after a successful TPLO and proper recovery!

If your pup is limping or showing signs of a leg injury, don’t wait! Early intervention can make all the difference. Call us today to schedule an evaluation. 💙🐾

Annual bloodwork is a key part of preventive care, even for healthy pets! While your dog or cat may seem perfectly fine, routine blood tests help us detect hidden health issues before they become serious.

✔️ Establishes a baseline for your pet’s normal values
✔️ Identifies early signs of illness, allowing for timely intervention
✔️ Monitors organ function, hydration levels, and potential underlying conditions
✔️ Ensures your pet is ready for procedures requiring anesthesia

A simple blood test can make a huge difference in your pet’s long-term health. Schedule their annual bloodwork today to keep them thriving for years to come! 🩺🐾

March is Poison Prevention Awareness Month—a crucial time to ensure your pets stay safe from harmful toxins! 🚫🐶🐱 Many everyday household items can be dangerous to our furry friends, including:

❌ Human medications like ibuprofen & acetaminophen
❌ Foods like chocolate, grapes, onions, and xylitol (found in sugar-free gum)
❌ Household cleaners & pesticides
❌ Certain plants like lilies (toxic to cats) and sago palms

If you suspect your pet has ingested something toxic, contact your veterinarian or the ASPCA Poison Control Hotline at (888) 426-4435 immediately. Let’s keep our pets happy, healthy, and safe! 💙

Is Your Dog’s Heart Healthy? ❤️🐶

Canine dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM), or an enlarged heart, is a serious condition that affects a dog’s ability to pump blood efficiently. Common signs include:

🔴 Lethargy
🔴 Coughing
🔴 Difficulty breathing
🔴 Collapse or fainting

Some breeds, like Dobermans, Boxers, and Great Danes, are more prone to DCM, but any dog can develop heart disease. Early detection is key! Regular checkups, heart screenings, and a proper diet can help keep your pup’s heart strong.

If your dog is showing any symptoms of heart disease, give us a call. We’re here to help keep your pets happy and healthy! 💙🐾

🚨 UTIs in Pets: What You Need to Know! 🚨

Urinary tract infections (UTIs) can cause discomfort and health issues for your pets. Signs include frequent urination, accidents in the house, straining, or blood in the urine. A urinalysis can help us identify:

🔬 Struvite Crystals – Can lead to painful bladder stones if untreated.
🔬 Red Blood Cells – A sign of irritation, infection, or bladder stones.
🔬 Rods (Bacteria) – Indicate an active infection requiring antibiotics.

If your pet is showing signs of a UTI, schedule an appointment with us! Early detection and treatment can prevent more serious complications. 💙🐾

Why Can’t We Fill Medications Without an Exam? Understanding the Veterinarian-Client-Patient Relationship (VCPR)

We know it can be frustrating when you need medication for your pet, but we can’t legally prescribe or refill it without an exam. This is because of the Veterinarian-Client-Patient Relationship (VCPR)—a standard that ensures your pet gets the safest, most effective care possible.

A VCPR means:
🐾 Your veterinarian has examined your pet within a set timeframe
🐾 We have enough knowledge of their health to make medical decisions
🐾 We are responsible for follow-up care and treatment outcomes

Without a current VCPR, it’s illegal for us to prescribe medications—including antibiotics, pain relief, and even flea prevention. This rule exists to protect your pet’s health, preventing incorrect treatments that could do more harm than good.

Regular exams allow us to keep your pet’s VCPR up to date and ensure they get the best care possible. If your pet is due for a check-up, call us to schedule an appointment today! 🐶🐱💙

Why Annual Exams Matter for Your Pet’s Health

Your pet ages much faster than we do, which means their health can change in just a short time. Annual exams allow us to catch potential issues early, prevent future problems, and ensure your furry friend is living their happiest, healthiest life!

During a wellness visit, we check for:
✔️ Dental health issues
✔️ Weight and nutrition concerns
✔️ Early signs of illness
✔️ Heart and lung health
✔️ Parasite prevention needs

Routine exams are the key to a longer, healthier life for your pet. If it’s been over a year since their last check-up, schedule an appointment today! 🐾💙

02/25/2025

Neutering your pet is one of the best decisions you can make for their long-term health and well-being! Not only does it help reduce the risk of certain cancers and unwanted behaviors like roaming and marking, but it also prevents contributing to pet overpopulation.

One important condition we often see is cryptorchidism, where one or both testicles fail to descend into the sc***um. Cryptorchid neuters are especially crucial because retained testicles are at a much higher risk of developing cancer and can also cause painful complications like torsion. Since the surgery is more complex than a standard neuter, it requires extra care—but the benefits far outweigh the risks of leaving a cryptorchid pet intact!

If your pet hasn’t been neutered yet or you have questions about cryptorchidism, give us a call! We’re here to help keep your pets happy and healthy. 💙🐾
