Just a reminder for everyone getting new puppies for Christmas. Training starts on day 1. Your puppy is a little sponge and constantly learning as they grow and mature.
Be proactive. I'm always happy to help people set their new puppies up for success so they can prevent bigger issues later.
Don't wait til your dog is a year old and out of control. Or do and then call me when you need help lol.
I don't want to see all these rehoming posts in 6 months when your cute puppy is more work than you anticipated.

Say hello to Rocky!
He's a 1 year old German Rottweiler.
He's a sweet dog, but struggles with jumping. Him being a big dog, that's not a safe behavior. He could easily knock someone over with his size.
He also has some resource guarding issues over high value items like bones. Again, this can be very unsafe behavior in a household with kids.
So along with addressing those issues we'll be working on his overall manners and teaching him some impulse control and obedience commands.
I'm excited to see how he turns around over the next three weeks!

One common question I get asked about the e-collar is "when can I stop using the collar?"
In my opinion it's not necessarily something I try to phase out. If used consistently and you continue to follow through with boundaries and rules with your dog, you'll naturally get to a point where you may be using it less and less depending on the dog.
But there's never a point where I say you'll never have to use this tool again. To me the e-collar is a tool to create a pathway for more opportunities for you and your dog.

Does your dog have some brattiness?
Introduce some new skills that challenge your dog and make them have to see you as someone to listen to and follow. Not just the person that gives them treats all the time.
Set up situations to practice your dog's impulse control.

Training isn't always easy.
It might be uncomfortable to make changes to you and your dog's life.
Change is hard. But staying the same and living with a dog who's behavior is causing you frustration and embarrassment is much harder.
So, trust the process. Put in the work. Because it's so worth it in the en

I am a dog lover and while I'd love to pet all the dogs, I recognize and respect the boundaries of other animals and people.
If I don't personally know a dog I'm not going to assume the dog is friendly or that it likes being touched by a stranger.
There are some dogs who absolutely love attention from strangers. But there are also some who don't like strangers in their personal space.
Always ask first. And be respectful when someone tells you no. Even if a dog is friendly their owner still has a right to not want other people touch their dog.
Also, teach this to your kids. Don't touch unfamiliar dogs and ask first.

Chevy went home yesterday!
Can't believe it's already been 3 weeks since Chevy started training!
I'm so excited for his owner to be able to walk him and take him on more adventures now that he has way better leash and listening skills.

All to often we just focus on what we want our dogs to learn.
You want your dog to learn how to sit, stay and come.
Those are all useful skills but each individual person will have their own unique reason why they want or need their dog to have those skills.
Is it just so you have some fun skills to show off to your friends? Or do you have a challenging dog and you need those commands to help maintain a level of safety and control in your life?
Me personally. One of my biggest why's is seeing how happy my dogs are when we can go on hikes off leash or let them freely romp in an open field. Those moments of letting them just enjoy being a dog mean a lot to me. So thats why I choose to do what I do with them. I want and need a level of control to make sure they listen and don't try to run off or chase after something that may surpise us.
Why do you train your dog?
What motivates you to keep going when you feel tired and frustrated and like it's not worth it anymore?

A few clips from Harley's go home lesson last week.
He did so great. We challenged him with different distractions, and I was so proud of his focus on his owner.
Teaching the owners is such an important piece to the training puzzle.
It doesn't matter how well trained the dog is, if the owners aren't taught how to maintain and continue the training then it's all just a waste.
Zara's owners are on point and showed up eager to learn.
And Zara was proud to show off her new skills. She genuinely wants to make you happy.
She still has a few days til her final lesson on Monday and I know her owners are excited!
The past few days Harley has been hard at work!
We've been challenging his skills in several different locations. The coffee shop, Atwoods, and he also joined us for our Thanksgiving festivities.
Yesterday, Harley joined us along with my friend and her dog Leia.
Holding a downstay was a little challenging for him at first around a new dog. And the chairs startled him a little. But he settled in and started to relax.
Every dog can benefit from neutral exposure. Learning to settle no matter what is going on in their surroundings. This is equally important for a service dog in training. He needs to be able to not worry but his environment and be focused on his handler.
Zara joined us for a trip to Atwoods to practice her training in a distracting environment. Noah even got to walk her, so she got practice working with a different handler and not just me.
Only a few more days til these two go home! And I'm so excited for the progress they're making!
Had a nice day working with Zara and Harley on their offleash skills!
This is your friendly reminder to PLEASE ask before petting a strangers dog.
1. The dog may not be friendly.
2. It's not your dog.
3. They may not want you petting them. As simple as that.
Chester is extremely friendly but if I allowed everyone that came up to us to pet him, it would lead to him getting too excited. My goal while we're out is to practice calm behavior in public.
Had a fun day working the dogs through some distractions today.
Chester got to practice being handled by another person besides me. This helps him learn that it's not just me he has to listen to. He'll have to listen to his owners too.
Chester also held a sit-stay while my friend handling him walked away to hold the door open for a gentleman. He did so great!
Apollo did great for his first time working in a public setting.
Both dogs did really well! They held their down stays while people passed and talked to them.
They settled while we had coffee and lunch.
This was a great challenge for both dogs.
This is real world training. Making our obedience skills practical and useful.
Obi finished up his board & train a few weeks ago.
He's a prime example of a "good dog" that still benefited from ECollar training.
He didn't have any behavior issues and already knew a lot but his owner wanted more off leash ability and a better communication system with him.
She also wanted to be able to do things with him like her other dog Leia who has also been through our program.
Chevy went home yesterday!
Can't believe it's already been 3 weeks since Chevy started training!
I'm so excited for his owner to be able to walk him and take him on more adventures now that he has way better leash and listening skills.
Chevy has been with us for almost a week now!
He's settling in and learning lots of new things. He's a lot more focused and eager to learn now!
The other day I had a good training moment with the dogs and wanted to share.
I was recording some stories and talking to my phone camera. While I was distracted and my attention was elsewhere, Kat and Leia took the opportunity to mean they were done and tried getting up a few times.
I didn't make a big fuss. I just verbally corrected them and had them lay back down. They didn't get released to go play in the yard until they were all waiting patiently.
Dogs are opportunistic and will take advantage if they think you're not paying attention. So practice and set up scenarios to test your dog's skills.
The Connective Canine came to life when I found my love and passion for empowering owners with the ability to live more free and calming lives with their dogs.
I know first hand how it feels to have a dog that you love, but is driving you crazy. I've been there. I have dealt with the embarrassment of my dog's behaviors. I have dealt with the guilt of considering re-homing. You are not alone with your struggles and there is hope.
I am Devon Albritton owner and creator of The Connective Canine. My husband Chris helps me run the business. My bonus son Noah helps as an added distraction when training.
I have a Bachelor's of Science in Biology and Chemistry (which has nothing to do with my dog training career, but Hey! I did a thing!) I am pursuing a more formal education in dog training and will be attending seminars over the upcoming year to learn from my mentors. I've been training my own dogs since I was 12. For the past 3 years I have been offering services to clients ranging from minor puppy training to the out of control crazy German Shepherd.
I am not perfect and I have made mistakes especially with my own dog, Levi (pictured to the left). He had and still has some issues, but has made huge progress over the past 7 years thanks to my involvement in the balanced training community. He has been my biggest teacher.
Improving your dog's behavior also means having to make changes in your own life. Changes that may not be easy. Training is a journey, but it's a journey you don't have to take alone. I will be right there guiding you through the ups and downs and doing everything in my ability to reach a solution.
Deciding to pursue professional training for your pet is a big step and I get that. Our dogs are family. You have to trust a complete stranger with your dog and I that can be stressful. That is why I am as transparent as possible. Never hesitate to ask me any questions.
Feel like you're ready for this amazing journey? I know I am!
