Here at Courage Rock we honor our veterans every chance we get. If only we could all be more like Doc… rest in paradise soldier🫡

With deep appreciation, we remember Leslie Dale Ready, affectionately known as Doc, who passed away peacefully on January 24, 2025, in Crown Point at the age of 81. Born on October 1, 1943, in East Chicago, Doc’s life was defined by service, dedication, and love for his community.

A man of integrity, Doc built a successful career as a Quality Control Director and business owner. His greatest passion, however, was honoring veterans. As a proud member of the Indiana Patriot Guard Riders, he found purpose in paying tribute to those who served.

A decorated war hero, Doc’s bravery extended a beyond the battlefield. He was honored with the Sheriff’s Award from the Porter County Sheriff’s Department, reflecting his deep commitment to protecting and uplifting others.

Doc’s kindness, strength, and unwavering dedication will be deeply missed, but his legacy will live on in the countless lives he touched.

🌟 Champion Spotlight: Cheveyo (“Chevy”) 🌟

Introducing Chevy, a majestic Percheron whose name embodies courage, strength, and leadership. Standing tall at 18 hands, this gentle giant has a heart as big as his frame.

🐴 Quick Facts:
• Breed: Percheron
• Gender: Gelding
• Color: Grey
• Height: 18 hands
• Birth Date: May 21, 2010

Chevy’s Story:
Chevy, affectionately nicknamed “Smalls” due to his towering size, joined our herd in May 2024, perfectly suited for our veterans’ program. Before finding his forever home with us, Chevy’s journey took a surprising turn. He was purchased at an auction by a kind-hearted woman who initially set out to buy a saddle but couldn’t leave Chevy behind after seeing his poor condition as he stepped off the trailer.

With time, care, and proper nutrition, Chevy regained his health and spirit. When it was time for his next chapter, he found his way to Courage Rock, where he now thrives and makes a profound impact on everyone he meets.

The Meaning Behind His Name:
The name Cheveyo comes from Native American culture, particularly the Hopi tribe, and means “spirit warrior” or “spiritual leader.” This name reflects Chevy’s qualities of courage, strength, and guidance. In Native American mythology, Cheveyo is often connected to healing and protecting others—qualities that resonate deeply with Chevy’s role in our programs.

Chevy’s Role at Courage Rock:
Chevy is a valued member of our veterans’ program, helping participants find strength and confidence through equine-assisted activities. He also works with more advanced riders, where his intelligence, calm demeanor, and willingness to work shine through.

Fun Facts About Chevy:
• 🐴 Percherons are one of the largest and oldest horse breeds, originally bred for strength and endurance.
• 🍎 Chevy loves treats and is always the first to greet you in the pasture.
• 🎨 Percherons are typically grey or black, and they’re known for their muscular build and intelligence.
• 🌟 Chevy’s towering size and gentle nature make him a favorite among both riders and visitors.

Chevy kindly asks for your support in the Celebrating Champions Birthday Cake Fundraiser. 🎂 For just $5 per cake, you can help him and his herd mates reach their goal of 35 cakes each. Every donation helps ensure these incredible horses continue to make a difference in the lives of others.

🌟 Champion Spotlight: Danny Boy 🌟

Meet Danny Boy, a regal and resilient American Saddlebred with an incredible story of survival and honor.

🐴 Quick Facts:
• Breed: American Saddlebred
• Gender: Gelding
• Color: Light Bay
• Height: 17 hands tall
• Birthdate: April 30, 2005 (shared with Sgt. Dan Patron’s birthday, honoring his legacy)

Danny’s Journey:
Danny Boy’s life began as an Amish cart horse, but his path took a tragic turn when he was sold to a slaughter stable in Pennsylvania. In June 2013, Solid Rock Therapeutic Riding Center in Uniontown, OH, stepped in to rescue him. Severely ill, Danny spent six weeks in quarantine, fighting for his life. Thanks to those who believed in him, he recovered and found his forever home in October 2016, arriving alongside his best friend, Pawnee.

Danny is named in honor of Sgt. Daniel J. Patron, a fallen Marine and beloved son of Gold Star Family Frank and Kathy Patron. His name and spirit reflect the courage and strength of Sgt. Dan, whose story is shared in Collecting Sgt. Dan.

Danny’s Role:
Now a proud member of our herd, Danny Boy works primarily in our veterans programs. He’s also a favorite for kids under 70 pounds, enjoying gentle hand walks and stretch exercises. His kind demeanor and tall stature make him a standout, both in the barn and in the hearts of those who meet him.

Fun Facts About Danny Boy:
• 🕊️ He shows signs of anxiety at feeding time, likely due to his past in the “starve pen.”
• 🏇 Standing at 17 hands, Danny holds his head high, reminding everyone of his regal presence.
• 🥕 His favorite treats are carrots and apples—but only when cut into small pieces!
• 💕 Danny has a big personality and, as Sgt. Patron’s mother says, best reflects her son’s spirited nature.

Danny Boy kindly asks you to consider donating to the Celebrating Champions Birthday Cake Fundraiser on his behalf. 🎂 For just $5 per cake, you can help him and his herd mates reach their goal of 35 cakes each. Your support makes all the difference!
