We are so proud of this amazing group of young women and student volunteers!

Though a few of our team members are missing from this photo, each and every one of them holds a special place in our Courage Rock family. Every one of these girls brings something unique and irreplaceable to the barn—whether it’s their compassion, work ethic, positive energy, or quiet determination.

Their dedication doesn’t go unnoticed. From mucking stalls to assisting clients, these young women show up with heart, ready to serve, support, and grow alongside our horses and heroes. We truly cherish what they bring to this organization, and we’re honored to be a part of their journey.

We’re beyond grateful for the impact they’ve already made, and we’re so excited to watch them continue to grow—both here at Courage Rock and in everything they do.

Thank you for your heart, your hands, and your help. We see you, and we appreciate you more than words can say.

Programs starting soon for Therapeion Therapeutic Riding Program

Hey everyone! We’re gearing up for a busy and exciting summer at Therapeion, and we want to make sure you don’t miss out on any of our upcoming programs:

Summer Session 1 starts May 6!
We currently have openings on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays, but we’re excited to announce that Libby is also offering Monday afternoon classes, including a Horsemanship class!
Libby is a PATH Intl. CTRI and mentor! Let’s get those Monday slots filled!

Pony Pals and Pages begins June 10

Camp Courage starts June 16

It’s Derby season, y’all!

While Churchill Downs gets ready for the “Run for the Roses,” we celebrate the amazing impact horses have—not just on the track, but in the hearts of our heroes.

Fun Fact: The Kentucky Derby has never been cancelled—not even during World Wars or the Great Depression. It’s the longest continuously held sporting event in the U.S. That kind of resilience? Sounds a lot like the spirit we see in the veterans and first responders who come to Courage Rock.

Here, the only race we run is toward healing, growth, and hope—powered by the trust between human and horse.

So whether you’re cheering for your favorite filly or just here for the hats, know that horses are changing lives every day—on and off the track.

🌹 Why Is the Kentucky Derby Called “The Run for the Roses”? 🌹

As the excitement builds for the 151st Kentucky Derby, you might wonder why this iconic race is often referred to as “The Run for the Roses.” Here’s the story behind the name:

In 1883, New York socialite E. Berry Wall presented roses to the ladies at a post-Derby party. Inspired by this gesture, Churchill Downs founder Meriwether Lewis Clark declared roses the official flower of the Derby. This tradition evolved, and starting in 1896, the winning horse began receiving a blanket of roses. The term “Run for the Roses” was later coined by sportswriter Bill Corum in 1925, capturing the essence of this cherished custom .

Today, the winning horse is adorned with a stunning garland of over 400 red roses, symbolizing victory and prestige. This beautiful tradition is a testament to the rich history and pageantry of the Kentucky Derby.

Courage Rock Stable is growing—and we can’t do it without YOU! As a nonprofit, our work is powered by the dedication and heart of our amazing volunteers. Whether you’re a seasoned horse handler or just looking to make a difference, there’s a place for you here.

What We Offer:
You’ll receive hands-on training in horse safety, grooming, and how to assist with our incredible participants and equine partners. No prior experience required—just a willing heart and a desire to give back.

Ways You Can Help:
• Support our therapeutic riding & horsemanship classes
• Help with events & fundraisers
• Join a committee or serve on our Board
• Assist with Camp Courage or the Therapeion program
• Offer skills in fundraising, grant writing, or behind-the-scenes planning

Volunteer Requirements:
• Must be 14+ years old
• Able to walk 45 minutes and lift overhead (for sidewalkers)
• Complete an orientation class
• Love horses, people, or both

Whether you can give one hour or ten, your time truly makes a difference.

From the Racetrack to Courage Rock: Celebrating Indian Run’s Legacy

As the excitement builds for the upcoming Kentucky Derby, we at Courage Rock Stable are proud to spotlight one of our own—Indian Run, a retired Thoroughbred mare whose racing career reflects the spirit of this prestigious event.

Racing Highlights:
• June 27, 2013 – Churchill Downs: Indian Run made her debut in a Maiden Special Weight race, finishing fifth and gaining valuable experience on the iconic track.
• July 24, 2013 – Horseshoe Indianapolis: She showcased her potential by securing a victory in a Maiden Special Weight race, earning a speed figure of 72.
• September 14, 2013 – Churchill Downs: Competing in an Allowance Optional Claiming race, Indian Run achieved a commendable third-place finish with a speed figure of 79.

Trained by Hall of Famer Steve Asmussen and ridden by Ricardo Santana Jr., Indian Run raced under the ownership of Winchell Thoroughbreds LLC. Her pedigree is notable, being sired by Indian Charlie out of Runnin Ute (by Gone West), aligning her with a lineage of distinguished racehorses.

Throughout her brief but impactful career, Indian Run earned $27,551 over three starts, demonstrating resilience and competitiveness on the track.

Now retired, Indian Run brings the same grace and determination to her new role at Courage Rock Stable, serving as a companion and symbol of the enduring bond between horse and human.

As we look forward to the 151st Kentucky Derby, we honor Indian Run’s contributions to the racing world and celebrate the journey that has brought her to our stable.
