I love puppies' first grooms. They may not look the greatest, but they are always so stinkin' cute!

Would there be any interest in a walk-in nails/ear cleaning clinic once or twice per month? If so, should I include sanitary clips and trimming of feet and face as options as well? I was thinking either Friday or Saturday mornings starting at 9:00.

After my last post, some of you may be wondering how best to keep your dogs warm in the winter. The longer you want your dog's coat, and the less work you want to do at home, the more often your dog will need to come in for grooming. A shorter coat or more at home brushing and bathing will mean you can properly maintain with less frequent professional groomings, assuming you know how to bathe and brush correctly.

Rufus here, who sadly crossed the rainbow bridge after this groom, had been coming in every 4 weeks to maintain his coat at about 1 inch. His mom also did a great job brushing him in between grooming visits, so despite his extra long hair, he never got more than a few minor tangles. Had his mom preferred not brushing him at home, he would have needed to come in every 2-3 weeks to maintain this length properly. Rest in peace sweet boy!

Lacey gets a shorter 1/2 inch clip in the summer and a longer 7/8 inch clip in the winter, but she comes in for grooming every 6-8 weeks all year long. This keeps her coat clean and brushed out enough that she doesn't get matted. Her hair is easier to maintain than Rufus', so she can get away with coming less often than he did, even though her winter clip is nearly as long.

Thinking about letting your dog's coat grow out for extra warmth this winter? This is what happens when long haired dogs' coats are not properly cared for. It is very uncomfortable for the dogs, as those tight mats pull on the skin and do not allow air flow. They can cause skin issues and hide injuries, as well as mess up the dog's ability to regulate body temperature properly.

When these dogs are finally brought in to have that pelted coat shaved off, the only choice is usually to clip them very short. Not only is it difficult to shave off tight mats without injuring the dog, but a coat shaved too short can result in sunburn or damage to the dog's now exposed langerhans cells, which are important for the immune system.

Long-haired dogs do best when kept on a 6-8 week grooming schedule, or more often if their coats are longer than about 3/4".

I need at least 5 reviews to be rated on FB, and I only have 4, so if any of you feel like reviewing my business, it would be greatly appreciated!

Usually I forget to take a before photo, but for this guy I managed to get a photo after the bath and before the haircut. What a handsome guy!

Photos of deshedding Betty the Samoyed. It had been about 2.5 months since her last deshedding, but she must have really been blowing coat, and had also gotten all kinds of burrs and w**d seeds tangled in her coat so she was pretty gnarly.

I failed to get a before photo, so the one of her all wet before any deshedding will have to do. You can see how much hair I got out in the tub, as well as how much more hair I got out after drying her and using a deshedding rake. They are probably similar amounts, since wet hair is much more condensed than dry hair.

First I soaked her in conditioner, then pushed undercoat out as I rinsed with a high pressure nozzle. Next came a really good shampooing, followed again by another high pressure rinse. Then I conditioned again, and brushed through the coat, removing most of the yard debris and tangles. Next came the high velocity blow dryer to loosen up more undercoat. After that was another good high pressure rinse and then I toweled her off. Then I dried her completely with the HV dryer and a stand dryer, pushing more undercoat away from the skin and out of the coat (not to mention all over the salon). Finally, I brushed out the tangles that were left, raked out even more undercoat, trimmed her feet and sanitary area, clipped her nails, and she was done!

I don't get to groom many cats, but here are 3. The persian is a sweet older cat who comes in fairly regularly. The shorthaired kitty had a good degreasing bath and deshedding. The gray kitty had super tight, hard mats. I'm sure he felt so much better after that was all shaved off, poor thing!

Summer was very busy, so it's been a while since I've posted anything. To make up for it, here are a bunch of photos of Shih tzus and Shih tzu mixes. The little girls with pink dye are the reason I picked that breed, since I love how they turned out! When they left, they looked like they were both wearing pink hats! The black dog is their much older sister, and is blind, but she did really well.
