The Mitzvah Fund, Inc

The Mitzvah Fund, Inc We offer veterinary surgery and dentistry to low income seniors, veterans, unhoused, domestic abused & disabled first responders. Done selflessly.

A Mitzvah is a kindness or a worthy deed. The Mitzvah Fund started in 2006 and became a 501 C3 in 2014. We are a small but mighty group of mostly volunteer veterinary professionals that strive to help the less fortunate. Owning a pet should not have to be a luxury but in today's economy even basic veterinary care can be daunting, especially to senior citizens on fixed incomes. We have helped hundr

eds of animals. As of February 2022 we have a fully equipped mobile veterinary surgery and dentistry unit based out of Montpelier, VT. On Fridays we see scheduled appointments in downtown Montpelier in front of city hall. We do surgery two days a week out of our home base in East Montpelier. We also try to help rescue organizations that are trying to care for and rehome special needs animals. However, we do not pay other animal hospitals to do work for patients under our care. We currently service only Central Vermont citizens but hope to expand in the future. We will be shvitzing Mitzvahs all over VT in the very near future!

We hope you had a good holiday or break. We want to thank all the committed community members at our unhoused shelters, community food shelfs, transit stations and outreach programs. The holidays can be especially lonely for our unhoused neighbors. The temperature’s have been unforgiving. We are so grateful to be part of a group of community partners that feel so deeply for our individual plights. Special thanks to the Executive Team at the Unitarian church, Rick D Angelis and our own Andrea Stander for organizing and manning the emergency low temperature overflow shelter again this year at the Unitarian Church.

Thank you Julie Bond for sharing your poem. May community and humanity prevail!

Cool case of the month!!
Meet our main man Mason. He has eyelid troubles!
So Dr. Connie and Dr. Kayla made magic makeovers! He has entropion disease. His eye lashes and lids roll back into his eyes and rub on his corneas! Ouch. Miserably painful. However Mason is a shmoosh of a lovely soul. He is a big hunk of burning love! Hasn’t missed a meal! He lost many teeth as well. His poor head is going to feel so much better soon!!!

We never met Robin but at a farmers market three years ago I always remembered meeting Rick Hyman. His love and pride for Robin was palpable and I was impressed by this mystery woman that did so much for so many. We parted hoping that we would get to meet her that summer but life happened and the meet up didn't happen... sadly because we missed out on a mensch (salt of the earth) of a human. On we went with our mission... Years later I get an email from Robin's estate attorneys-- thanks to Rick they had heard about our little non profit that could.... Thanks to Robin and Rick its the non profit that really can now! There are no words of thanks for the cushion and anxiety that the Robin Lynn Kraut foundation provided during such a desperate time in our state. The difference Robin makes daily in our lives will forever be remembered. So much hopeful gratitude from all of us at the Mitzvah Fund.

Huge shout out to Montpelier Police Department and Montpelier Public Works for helping us get Baby Huey safely to the Transit station this morning with all the unexpected snow. 21,000 pounds is hard to move and control in greasy slush!!! Baby Huey is a BEAST!

Again… it takes a village to keep us going. Yesterday our heat tape failed and our grey water tank was a little frozen. One phone call to Formula Nissan and Jack & Sharon Castellaneta and we were in their heated garage thawing our situation out and completed the task in an hour. When you were trying to manage an RV in Vermont in the winter, we just can’t say enough about it our incredible community partners. They rise, they’re there, and their staff are incredibly supportive to the hopes and folks that we are trying to accomplish success. Formula Nissan is an incredible sponsor and an amazing partner to help us help our community. There are no words to express our incredible gratitude and appreciation for every day support.

Community is everything! The Mitzvah Fund depends on all of our community partners to make the magic happen. This Giving Tuesday, we hope you think of us. Seniors make up the majority of our work, and our partnerships with CVCOA and Meals on Wheels directly feed our surgery schedule! Seniors are suffering in our economy and the shame and anxiety that comes from not being able to care for their animal is incredibly stressful. Often their animal is their only family. Help us help them this coming year. We appreciate our community’s dedication to our mission!

PD Pete came to us through the Montpelier Police Department. He was born with a defect that left him blind, and his family, who had been living on the streets, made the heartbreaking decision to relinquish him so he could get care.

Thanks to our community partners, donors, and veterinary team, Pete is now safe, healthy, and finally able to experience a life without pain.

We are not a rescue, but when animals reach us through police or social services, we make sure they receive the medical care they need and help rehome them when appropriate.

Your support allows us to provide essential veterinary care for the pets of low income seniors, veterans, disabled first responders, and unhoused neighbors. Gifts like yours make second chances possible.

❤️ This Giving Tuesday, help us continue our work.

Our Story

A Mitzvah is a random act of kindness or a worthy deed.

The Mitzvah Fund started in 2006 and became a 501 C3 in 2013. We are a small but mighty group of volunteer veterinary professionals that strive to help the less fortunate. Owning a pet should not have to be a luxury but in today's economy even basic veterinary care can be daunting, especially to senior citizens on fixed incomes. We have helped hundreds of animals. Since we no longer work out of our own animal hospital we are very fortunate to have teamed up with Stonecliff Veterinary Surgical Center in Montpelier, VT. On Fridays we rent their facility and provide veterinary surgical and dentistry options for qualifying senior citizens and rescue organizations that are trying to care for and rehome special need animals. We currently service only Central Vermont seniors but hope to expand in the future.
