The Mitzvah Fund, Inc

The Mitzvah Fund, Inc We offer veterinary surgery and dentistry to low income seniors, veterans & disabled first responders A Mitzvah is a kindness or a worthy deed. Done selflessly.

The Mitzvah Fund started in 2006 and became a 501 C3 in 2014. We are a small but mighty group of mostly volunteer veterinary professionals that strive to help the less fortunate. Owning a pet should not have to be a luxury but in today's economy even basic veterinary care can be daunting, especially to senior citizens on fixed incomes. We have helped hundreds of animals. As of February 2022 we hav

e a fully equipped mobile veterinary surgery and dentistry unit based out of Montpelier, VT. On Fridays we see scheduled appointments in downtown Montpelier in front of city hall. We do surgery two days a week out of our home base in East Montpelier. We also try to help rescue organizations that are trying to care for and rehome special needs animals. However, we do not pay other animal hospitals to do work for patients under our care. We currently service only Central Vermont citizens but hope to expand in the future. We will be shvitzing Mitzvahs all over VT in the very near future!

Sam the man update. Many have asked how Sammy is doing after losing his people suddenly. He now lives with Lucas’s sister. We proceeded with his scheduled dental procedure and he did really well. He lost a lot of bad teeth. He is doing great and has recovered well and has not had any seizures! His epilepsy is well managed on just one medication and he is feeling great now that so many bad teeth are gone and all the chronic dental disease is gone. He loves his new kitty friend and they have bonded tightly. He is enjoying life with his new person and we hope that Tammy and Lucas are pleased with his outcome. Our hearts go out to all their family members missing them this holiday season. ❤️

Such a good boy with so so so many issues. As soon as he gains weight and has good bloodwork we will remove his leg. In our ideal world a vet tech or veterinarian is ideal. He has had so so so much trauma. He is a doll and I adore him but slow and steady is his jam.

We will amputate as soon as he is feeling good. ❤️

The Barre Elks Club has offered us a generous match today. Any donations made today will be matched to help us get to our $5000 goal. Everyone, human and furry, at The Mitzvah Fund is SO THANKFUL for your support!!

If this campaign is successful, it will enable The Mitzvah Fund's small but mighty veterinary team to get a critical diagnostic instrument for helping the many small dogs and cats with painful teeth that they treat every week.

We are heartbroken by the tragic loss of Tammy and Lucas Menard, who died while sleeping in a tent after their 80 allowable days in the state motel program ended.

A vigil will be held for Tammy and Lucas at 4:30 p.m. today (Saturday) at Montpelier City Hall.

There is urgent need for safe shelter and support for our unhoused neighbors. Everyone deserves a place to call home and we must come together as a community to protect our most vulnerable neighbors.

Do you have family and friends that don't want gifts but you buy the something anyway?

Give them the perfect gift.... Help us fix painful teeth!!

The Mitzvah Fund, Central Vermont's nonprofit mobile veterinary hospital, has launched its first ever "Giving Tuesday" campaign to raise the money needed to purchase a small-sized digital dental x-ray sensor. You can see and support our campaign here: https://givebutter.com/43hrtB
Like people, pets' teeth can be a source of serious problems for their health and their quality of life. MOST of the veterinary care The Mitzvah Fund provides is dentistry which would be impossible for the folks we serve to afford at a regular veterinary clinic.
Infected teeth are very painful. Bad teeth can lead to heart disease, kidney disease, chronic head pain, lethargy, and many other complications. With good dental care pets can live longer and have an excellent quality of life.
The Mitzvah Fund cares for small dogs, cats and many have those cute smushed-in faces and they all have tiny mouths. Taking accurate x-rays is essential and saves time during dental procedures which are performed under anesthesia. A smaller dental sensor will allow for sp*ed, accuracy and less anesthesia time.
By supporting our Giving Tuesday campaign with a gift IN ANY AMOUNT be assured you are making such a difference to our daily operations. THANK YOU!
*Veterinary medical equipment is super expensive because it is basically the same as what is used for people. A small-sized dental x-ray sensor will cost The Mitzvah Fund $5000, and that's with our non-profit discount!

Wiggle wishes everyone a Happy Thanksgiving. He is very thankful today. Three legs and alive is better than 4 legs and starving in the woods. He loves his confidence pack. In need of some behavior modification training (thank you Emily Lewis) and then off he will go into the big world. Looking for a perfect match home. Confident dogs are a must. He needs a leader. Has prey drive and will kill chickens. (Survived outdoors hunting for weeks.) Fleeing cats and dogs not an option because it presses his prey drive button. Living kindly and respectfully with three bold cats and two confident dogs now. Prefers women but adapts to men well with proper introduction. Will be on behavior meds for life due to trauma. ONLY seasoned behavior savvy experienced homes will be entertained. Ideally pitty experience because he has some very typical Pitty traits. He is a VERY special sweet smart soul. Housebroken, great in the car, doesn't destroy toys or chew things, safe to leave home uncrated. He waits by door patiently. Great in crate if your home. Very vocal if locked up and you're gone. 55 pounds will be his perfect weight. He is a love bug and stunning!

Wiggle update: so our little man had a set back. From all the trauma in his muscle he formed a seroma. He has allowed us to wrap his little stump and flush it and is so good about his meds. Wiggle Wiggle is such a fighter. Will make someone an awesome companion soon. He does have some prey drive but he adores children and most dogs. If you know a perfect home for him please reach out to us. He will be a project dog. Needs a lot of attention and training but he is an incredible diamond in the rough.

Hello friends! With falling leaves, come jumping fleas. 🍂 We are seeing so many clients that are battling terrible flea infestations and we are hoping some of our online friends could give us a hand. We have run out of Seresto collars for cats and would SO appreciate it if you might be able to get us some more. Here is a link to our wishlist on Chewy. The Seresto collars are on page 2. Thank you! ❤️

Come on people. This level of cuteness is illegal. She lost 27 teeth and has a new set of nostrils. Today is the first day in her life she can breathe. Let's just say Lily Rose is a rock star and beyond ridiculously cute. Her senior dad completely adores her every cell. So do we! A total love bug ❤️❤️❤️

Congrats to Wiggle!! Wiggle boy had his amputation and neuter on Saturday. 6 hours of anesthesia. It was such an old injury he had many pieces of bone buried deep
in his muscles. Very very hard amputation that even a boarded surgeon would have cursed a bit thru. We are so lucky to have Dr. Connie and her 40 years of experience. We practiced before referral hospitals and emergency clinics. We did it all and as the Mitzvah Fund we still practice this way.
Wiggle has a long road to recovery . He will need to be on behavior medications for separation anxiety and still needs very strict bathroom routines because he was allowed free range of an empty house with no crate so he thinks anywhere is ok to go to the bathroom but his super smart self has decided that in front of litter boxes is the right place. They p*e and p**p there after all. So atleast he is thoughtful. He is so smart he will be a perfect boy soon enough. He still needs to gain 20+ pounds and find harmony in his gut. He has had bad reflux because he can't tolerate many medications. He won't be up for adoption soon but if you could donate towards his care we would be so incredibly grateful. He has been a very expensive community stray for us.

Hello folks. So we try to help community medical strays. This boy is special. We need to amputate a terrible hind leg fracture, neuter him and he has had bloods and all vaccines. He came from a terrible situation. His initial foster family was great but he has serious prey drive. Our cats are fine because they won’t run. However he has SERIOUS PREY DRIVE. Chickens and fearful cats are out. He loves a dog that will be the boss of him. He is special and may need long term behavior meds due to fear. We will amputate and Neuter on Tuesday. We could totally use a fiscal assist on this boy that has never had a fair shake. Many cute videos to follow. His name is currently Wiggle! Adores adores adores children.

Sometimes we feel like we have to find our super hero capes to do what we do. Adulting is HARD. Went to a conference that reminded us how brave our venture is. Here is a pearl!

Every morning practice super hero poses for two minutes to this song! If you hear the Mitzvah Fund truck rocking out on Friday mornings you will know why. I think we might start a Friday flash mob! Tackle this world with humor and love. Put your damn cape on!

Our Story

A Mitzvah is a random act of kindness or a worthy deed.

The Mitzvah Fund started in 2006 and became a 501 C3 in 2013. We are a small but mighty group of volunteer veterinary professionals that strive to help the less fortunate. Owning a pet should not have to be a luxury but in today's economy even basic veterinary care can be daunting, especially to senior citizens on fixed incomes. We have helped hundreds of animals. Since we no longer work out of our own animal hospital we are very fortunate to have teamed up with Stonecliff Veterinary Surgical Center in Montpelier, VT. On Fridays we rent their facility and provide veterinary surgical and dentistry options for qualifying senior citizens and rescue organizations that are trying to care for and rehome special need animals. We currently service only Central Vermont seniors but hope to expand in the future.
