The Mitzvah Fund started in 2006 and became a 501 C3 in 2014. We are a small but mighty group of mostly volunteer veterinary professionals that strive to help the less fortunate. Owning a pet should not have to be a luxury but in today's economy even basic veterinary care can be daunting, especially to senior citizens on fixed incomes. We have helped hundreds of animals. As of February 2022 we hav

e a fully equipped mobile veterinary surgery and dentistry unit based out of Montpelier, VT. On Fridays we see scheduled appointments in downtown Montpelier in front of city hall. We do surgery two days a week out of our home base in East Montpelier. We also try to help rescue organizations that are trying to care for and rehome special needs animals. However, we do not pay other animal hospitals to do work for patients under our care. We currently service only Central Vermont citizens but hope to expand in the future. We will be shvitzing Mitzvahs all over VT in the very near future!

Soooo. It’s happened again. An evil twist of fate on the exact anniversary of the 2023 disastrous flood. The next few days will be very busy. Many more communities were hit than last year. Our own Dr. Connie is land locked in Worcester.
CVDART has the shelter fully set up at the BOR basement. No animals have come in yet. People have to be able to get out of their homes before seeking shelters so the next few days will be long and busy. I am posting some cute pics for now of patients and family members because the future will probably hold some not so cute pics. Sighhhh Groundhog Day Nightmare 2024.

Hello to all our friends and followers. With a heavy heart on the eve of the anniversary of the worst flood in our area we are back to facing our biggest fears. We have been put on ALERT from CVDART ( Central Vermont Disaster Animal Response Team) and are ready to respond as needed to any sheltering events in Central VT and surrounding county’s. We are hoping and praying that the next 15 hours will not be a do over of last year. If you are in a flood zone please take yourself and your animals to safety and don’t wait too long to decide to go. If you need help please reach out to VT 211 and they will direct you to the best resources in your area. Feel free to email us at [email protected].
Central VT animal professionals are amazing and we will all come together again and care for our community. Do your part by keeping yourself and your pets safe and avoiding as much risk as possible. Here are some pics from last years efforts. We are so so hoping not to see each other like this again!! Kudos to CVDART, VDART, VT 211, Montpelier PD, CVHS and all of our local social service agencies for coming together in times like these. ❤️❤️

Every day we do high risk patients. If we say so ourselves… it’s what we know and enjoy. Today Peteie was our dental for the day. She had two rounds of bloodwork, X-rays, no murmur or symptoms of heart disease but yet… after two hours of completely uneventful anesthesia she decided to have a really meaningful discussion with the all mighty. I can honestly say that we haven’t had a cardiac arrest like this since my ER days. She was fine and then not ok at all.
Luckily she decided our conversation was a better one than the almighty and she is a hot ticket tonight barking and telling me exactly what she needs. All of our patients are mostly high risk. Dr, Connie and Dr. Kayla work hard to make sure that we have done absolutely everything pre anesthesia to make sure they do well. Because we had labs and bloods is the main reason why we knew this little gem was just having a side effect of her sedation medication. She needed a lot
of them because of her anxiety. Dr Connie and myself trusted each other thru the entire situation and somehow knew that it was going to be ok. We never panicked we just pivoted and adapted. That takes 40 plus years of experience. When we say that this work is meaningful we mean it. Most if not all
of our patients are not an easy peasy anesthetic case. However, we are very blessed to live at a time that anesthesia is not nearly as scary and our patients have such an amazing chance to get better and stay better. Peteie hates the camera and only loves her dad. He is a veteran and a very challenged senior. Please include us in your weekly prayers. We know a higher power assists us every day. However I am Saging the truck as we speak!!! ☺️

Huge shout out to so many awesome Montpelier businesses that are assisting our little non profit!!

The Mitzvah Fund would like to make communal dog bowls a thing of the past! Would you go drink water from a glass from the folks that sat before you at a restaurant?? Diseases like Kennel Cough and Canine Influenza are easily spread via communal bowls.

Guys Farm and Yard, Splash, Botanica Florals, 802 Coffee, Capital Cannibus, Woodbury Mountain Toys, Northfield Savings Bank, North Branch Tea Room, City of Montpelier, Onion River Outdoors, & Kellogg Hubbard Library have all joined our effort. Still more to come!

Please keep your dogs home during this extreme heat but when they are walking the streets of Montpelier please use our disposable compostable bowls and water sources thruout the city.

Barre is next! Thanks to Pearl Street Pizza and Mikes Deli for already signing up!!!

Huge shout out to Dr. Buzby’s Toe Grips!!! We use and recommend these for senior dogs and cats that are having mobility issues and they often donate them to us for our patients! These came in the mail today thanking us for our work!! Great company with an amazing idea. It takes a village to help elderly people and elderly pets. This company gets that!

Sometimes we have an especially good boy. Meet All. (Racing name was All Good). He had a very extensive dental and lost almost all of his upper teeth. Greyhounds have terrible teeth because of so much inbreeding within the racing lines. They are genetically predisposed to horrific dental disease. This poor 11 year old 86 pounder had a rough day yesterday and continues recovering with us tonight. His momma is a veteran. Send All some happy thoughts especially of food. Need this boy to eat! Dental
disease continues to run our lives here at the mitzvah fund.

We had one of our busiest days of CVCOA Meals on Wheels Clinics 8 out of 8 were complicated cases. 7 out of 8 need dentals or tumor removals. Seniors suffer daily from the cruel reality of surviving on the absolute minimum. This population needs us so so badly. Nothing is worse than telling someone at a free clinic that their animal has cancer or severe heart disease we had THREE of these Our staff was amazing and even though it was a 14 hour day everyone stayed chipper and kind. Can’t say enough good things about our staff and volunteers We are so so blessed!!!!! Even Carat rose above her grief and comforted so many!!

Charlize is a lovely senior! Her dad and her are absolute besties. She has been having urinary tract infections since November! The cause was so so many bladder stones, sand and sludge in her bladder. She had been partially obstructed for months and still never had an accident in the house. Soon we will know what kind of stones and then a good diet to feed her. She is such a lovely girl. Wish her well on her recovery!!

Our Story

A Mitzvah is a random act of kindness or a worthy deed.

The Mitzvah Fund started in 2006 and became a 501 C3 in 2013. We are a small but mighty group of volunteer veterinary professionals that strive to help the less fortunate. Owning a pet should not have to be a luxury but in today's economy even basic veterinary care can be daunting, especially to senior citizens on fixed incomes. We have helped hundreds of animals. Since we no longer work out of our own animal hospital we are very fortunate to have teamed up with Stonecliff Veterinary Surgical Center in Montpelier, VT. On Fridays we rent their facility and provide veterinary surgical and dentistry options for qualifying senior citizens and rescue organizations that are trying to care for and rehome special need animals. We currently service only Central Vermont seniors but hope to expand in the future.
