yess!!

Just because it “works” doesn’t mean it’s right.⁣
⁣
Some of the top performing trainers and competitors on earth are violent and abusive toward the horses in their care.⁣
⁣
They win buckles, ribbons, titles, accolades. They accomplish mind blowing feats 🏆🤯⁣
⁣
The ol’ cowboy way of snubbing, tying, forcing, flooding, bucking out, etc. has “worked” for centuries.⁣
⁣
And yet…⁣
⁣
Effectiveness alone cannot be the deciding factor in selecting training methods.⁣
⁣
If you only base decisions off of “what works,” you can 𝘫𝘶𝘴𝘵𝘪𝘧𝘺 𝘢𝘯𝘺 𝘮𝘦𝘢𝘴𝘶𝘳𝘦 𝘰𝘧 𝘪𝘯𝘩𝘶𝘮𝘢𝘯𝘦 𝘵𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘵𝘮𝘦𝘯𝘵.⁣
⁣
Ethics must be considered.⁣
⁣
It’s unnecessary to hurt and force animals to bend our will, for our own benefit.⁣
⁣
Ethical practices yield magnificent results… without the abuse.⁣
⁣
We can connect to horses in absolutely profound, meaningful, even spiritual ways 🌬️⁣
⁣
We can train in such a way that the horse truly delights in the process—with a sparkle in her eye.⁣
⁣
This is what we hope for humanity.⁣
⁣
To connect rather than force.⁣
⁣
To empower rather than conquer.⁣
⁣
To learn rather than judge.⁣
⁣
To love rather than oppress.⁣
⁣

How to get your horse OBSESSED with training 🐎⁣
⁣
If we know anything about you, it’s that you want your horse to actually WANT to be with you.⁣
⁣
To genuinely enjoy—even revel in— your time together 🩵⁣
⁣
It’s entirely possible. Here’s how: ⁣
⁣
1️⃣ Use positive reinforcement⁣
⁣
Incorporating food rewards into your training is one of the best ways to get your horse from accepting/relaxed about training… ⁣
⁣
Into absolutely LOVING. IT.⁣
⁣
When there’s something wonderful and desirable that your horse gets to earn, she’s going to go above and beyond in her participation.⁣
⁣
When you use food rewards well, her enthusiasm will be infectious. She will run to you for training sessions, and treasure your time together.⁣
⁣
2️⃣ Give your horse choice & control⁣
⁣
When you pair the potential to earn food rewards with choice & control in your horse, you’re doing two things:⁣
⁣
First, you’re decreasing her fear levels. Think about it: when you have no control over what’s happening to you and your body, you’re going to feel the most fear. It’s the same for her: when she has autonomy, she will feel safer.⁣
⁣
Second, you’re turning training into an addicting, fun, healthy game. Animals love when they get to be an “operator of their environment”⁣
⁣
They do X, you do Y.⁣
⁣
It becomes FUN in the way that playing sports and learning new skills is fun for us, even when it’s challenging 💪🏼⁣
⁣
Having control of the environment is a motivator in itself, just like food rewards are. This is POWERFUL stuff!⁣
⁣
3️⃣ Use lots of excellent shaping⁣
⁣
When you break down complex and/or fear-inducing behaviors into very small steps, set your horse up for success, and go back to an easier step if your horse struggles…⁣
⁣
You set up a space where your horse gets to feel genuinely safe, and clear about what you want.⁣
⁣
Eliminating fear & frustration through shaping wipes away the worst parts of interacting with humans, and allows the enjoyment from the previous 2 points to shine through ☀️⁣

Got my late birthday present yesterday! And couldn’t be happier!! I really love this halter! It’s pretty big on him now but I know in no time he’ll grow right into it! Credit to my sisters for designing it!
