One of my absolute pleasures as a Dog Trainer is getting to teach about certain aspects of my career. Service dogs are growing more popular as time goes on, which allows those in need to more easily access them, but also allows for fake, poorly trained service dogs, and pets to have easier access into public spaces as well.
So here is some general information about Service Dogs that you may not know!
A dog does not qualify as a service dog or assistance dog if:
- They are present for protection, this includes dogs that are trained to bite or bark at intruders or criminals.
- They are present for personal defence, these are dogs that may be specificly trained to maintain space around their handler, and may be trained to bite or scare an attacker.
- They are present for emotional comfort or are an emotional support animal (unless they are acting to mitigate a psychiatric disability as certified by a medical professional, and have been specifically task trained in this area) ESA's are NOT Service Dogs and do not hold the same rights.
- They are therapy animals and well-behaved canine citizens who visit with people in situations such as hospitals or during personal counselling sessions, or are facility or working dogs who provide emotional comfort in situations such as courtrooms or help first responders (for example, facility dogs that are present to support victims of crime, search dogs or cadaver dogs.) While these dogs are very well trained they canot also be Service Dogs.
Service Dogs are specifically trained with tasks related to and with the purpose of mitigating an individual's disability. If you do not have a disability you do not qualify for a service dog.
Services dogs have been shown to make a significant difference to many people with disabilities, enabling them in multiple ways. The benefits of service dogs can include increased independence, social relationships, self-esteem, and life satisfaction, and decreased anxiety, stress, and loneliness.
As a non-profit organization our goal is to place Service Dogs with families that may otherwise be unable to receive these life changing animals.
