Wishing you a happy and safe Independence Day! Be mindful of pets who may be scared of the noise and take precautions to ensure their safety. Keep them indoors or in well-fenced areas, and provide treats or playtime to make the night enjoyable for them. If needed, create a quiet space for them to retreat to. Please be safe!

Pack walks are not normally something I do, because my focus is to teach independent obedience around distractions, and complete focus on handler, this is not a situation my dogs are typically in. However it was super fun and the dogs loved being out together!

One of my absolute pleasures as a Dog Trainer is getting to teach about certain aspects of my career. Service dogs are growing more popular as time goes on, which allows those in need to more easily access them, but also allows for fake, poorly trained service dogs, and pets to have easier access into public spaces as well.
So here is some general information about Service Dogs that you may not know!

A dog does not qualify as a service dog or assistance dog if:

- They are present for protection, this includes dogs that are trained to bite or bark at intruders or criminals.
- They are present for personal defence, these are dogs that may be specificly trained to maintain space around their handler, and may be trained to bite or scare an attacker.
- They are present for emotional comfort or are an emotional support animal (unless they are acting to mitigate a psychiatric disability as certified by a medical professional, and have been specifically task trained in this area) ESA's are NOT Service Dogs and do not hold the same rights.
- They are therapy animals and well-behaved canine citizens who visit with people in situations such as hospitals or during personal counselling sessions, or are facility or working dogs who provide emotional comfort in situations such as courtrooms or help first responders (for example, facility dogs that are present to support victims of crime, search dogs or cadaver dogs.) While these dogs are very well trained they canot also be Service Dogs.

Service Dogs are specifically trained with tasks related to and with the purpose of mitigating an individual's disability. If you do not have a disability you do not qualify for a service dog.

Services dogs have been shown to make a significant difference to many people with disabilities, enabling them in multiple ways. The benefits of service dogs can include increased independence, social relationships, self-esteem, and life satisfaction, and decreased anxiety, stress, and loneliness.

As a non-profit organization our goal is to place Service Dogs with families that may otherwise be unable to receive these life changing animals.

It's a new year, which mean new goals!
Our fundraising goal for 2024 is $25,000, this money goes directly to training Service Dogs for individuals with life altering disabilities. Service dogs can help in so many meaningful ways for many people! Each month this year we will be introducing more ways to donate. In theme with new years resolutions, for the month of January we will be selling calendars and bookmarks. All proceeds will go towards the training and care of the service dogs in our program.
Calendars are $5 and can be customized with a variety of colors.
Bookmarks are $1
All donations are tax deductible.

Kula has been working hard these past couple of weeks on her scent training!
Scent training can be used for a variety of things with service dogs, including medical alerts such and seizures, blood sugar, cardiac, and more! Service dogs can also be taught how to track their handlers scents, this is useful for eloping behavior often seen with autism or dementia.

In the photo Kula is holding a PVC pipe, which holds a scent. She will carry this around for a designated amount time, this is called imprinting. Imprinting is a common way that dogs can be introduced to a scent with play, but there are many different ways that dogs can be taught! Depending on the type of scent, type of alert and ability of their handler, training may have to be modified in order to get the best fit.

Kula is learning a method often used for detection dogs in police and military work. This method teaches her to search away from her handler. (Such as dogs that search cars, search in airports, or post offices ect.)

Many service dogs need to learn to scent their handler and alert to them or someone around them when they smell that something is amiss. So the training would be slightly altered to best achieve this.

This is often why service dog teams ask to not be distracted. Dogs are extremely smart, but can get sidetracked very easily. If you stop to say hi or pet a working dog you may be creating an extremely dangerous situation for their handler if the dog misses and alert.
