I received this email from Steve Edwards
Thought I would share this on my page because it’s so true to the equine. Teaching and handling them like a puppy dog because of some past trauma in your own lives will not be 100 % effective in developing a willing partner. We need to communicate and teach the language of the equine like momma teaches that foal starting the hour it hits the ground. It’s doesn’t end with the initial loving connection that is created for bonding and survival. Then there are lessons in boundaries and athleticism.
There are some folks out there teaching what I call “woo woo magical unicorn ways with equines” Many of these horses eventually find their way to me with issues because a well rounded foundation was not achieved. This is what I truly believe and others do that have experienced equines coming from
all kinds of backgrounds and histories.
Enjoy Steve’s story:
Thunder Mare
Howdy there,
Let me tell you about a gelding horse that was in love with a mare.
Yes, it's a romance story as old as time... maybe even as old as me. 😂
I watched this little gelding horse follow this mare around everywhere she went. He couldn't stay away and as it goes with these young love stories, the mare looked at him and wasn't having any of it.
This mare looked back at that little horse, pinned her ears and said to him, "Don't you come any closer!"
He kept coming.
She pinned her ears and started swishing her tail... "You better stay back!"
She asked him, and now she's telling him...
He kept on coming! "I love you! I want to see you! I want to be with you"
Finally she had it and was about ready to demand upon him.
BOOM BOOM BOOM!
You know what happened? That mare spun and kicked the thunder out of that horse. Kicked him hard, turned around, grabbed him with her mouth, shook him, and threw him on the ground.
"OH NO! He will never love that mare again."
Wrong answer... that horse followed that mare around, ducking his head and licking his lips.
Equine understand ask, tell, demand.
I hate to sound like I'm an old grumpy man, talking about how folks are too sensitive, but here is the truth... either they're going to pay the price or you're going to pay the price. I'm looking out for you! Some of these folks who love animals and know nothing about equine would have you believe that you need to treat these mules and donkeys like cats and dogs. Talking baby talk to them, petting them, offering them treats, and even dressing them up in costumes.
Folks, that's how you get yourself or someone close to you sent to the emergency room, or even killed.
You are too valuable. Your life is worth too much to be throwing it away because you feel uncomfortable giving that mule a lesson... a price was paid for your life and we're getting ready to celebrate that story here in December... that's another story... but the point is... the lead mare makes the members of the herd pay the price for stepping out of line and you and I need to take our cues from nature.
Taking our cues from nature rather than all the 'experts' on social media, that's a trade I'm willing to make for myself, you should be willing to make that trade for yourself... especially because that's exactly how these equine act in their natural environments and in the herd.
In my last email, we talked about ask, tell, demand and I told you, "they are going to still love you. They will still want to be around you. They will still want your attention." It's the truth.
Folks, as you train on the ground, leaving the saddle in the tack house, you want to use these precious months in the winter time as an opportunity to become the herd leader. To establish yourself as the one they look to for guidance and instruction.
Being on the ground gives you the upper hand in your communication. Do not let November, December, January etc. go by thinking, "Oh golly, I can't ride so I can't do anything."
Bologna!
Now is the time to work on YOUR timing. Now is the time to work on YOUR leadership. Now is the time to work on YOUR education.
And folks, I wanna help you. I want to encourage you. As you know everything on my website is there for you. Some is free, some is paid... all of it will help you gain the trust of your animal and get results.
