Day 40
He’s not a fan of the phone being close to him so he wasn’t as relaxed. Before I started videoing he was keeping his eye closed while I was rubbing his forehead with his head lowered.
Day 39
Venom is starting to trust me and is allowing me to rub his ears, forehead, jaw, and a little bit of his muzzle!!!
I was talking to my daughter Zoey, videoing and rubbing Venoms ear!!!!!
When I stopped videoing…….Venom let me pet his forehead!!!!!!!
Finally I have an update on Venom!!!!
I must say, Venom has been one of the most challenging horses I've worked with, pushing me to be a better trainer!
He's not aggressive in any way. Sadly, he's just really scared of people. After working with him I began to realize that he was terrified of my hands, not my body being close to him but my hands. If I had my hands in my pockets he’d be okay with me getting close to him and leaning on him. But as soon as my hands came out of my pockets he would put himself as close as he could to the wall and start shaking in fear.
I decided to jump back and start back at the very beginning. I gave him about a week off of training and only went into his pen to feed him. When I started working with him again I just took it slow and didn’t worry about touching him. I’d walk near him and stand or kneel there until he released his tension and relaxed then I’d leave his pen. I soon saw a huge change in his behavior around me, he was relaxing more and more each day to the point where he about falls asleep while I’m next to him!
My goal is to help him become the best version of himself by building his trust and confidence in people!
🔇NO SOUND 🔇
I apologize but there is no sound due to music in the background playing.
Venom will let me pet him but he doesn’t love it. I have haltered him a few times but he hates me being close to his muzzle. The past few days I stepped back and decided to let Venom touch me. I want him to feel comfortable and trust me, so I’m going back to the basics.
In this short video you can watch Venom choose me over his food and walk up behind me!
Day 20
It's truly uplifting to see Venom starting to trust me. He's becoming more and more relaxed, and I was overjoyed when he let me rub his eye. I've been using a technique that I learned from observing the bond between mares and foals, the mares will lick their foals eye to provide comfort and reassurance, and it's been incredibly effective for building trust.
Day 16 Session 1
I recorded this morning's haltering session, and I'm thrilled to see our progress! Normally, when I toss the halter up onto his neck, he's fine, but today he didn't like it. So, I simply dropped it over his neck, and it worked better. I was tossing it over his head, anticipating that he might spook, but he's learning to trust me more each day. After this session, I'm confident that he is overcoming his fear of the halter. Although I need to use the stick to guide the halter on, he's slowly allowing me to get closer to his muzzle.
Through trial and error, we're forging an unbreakable bond, built on trust, understanding, and mutual respect.
Day 289
Marge, the lovable and oh-so-spoiled donkey, is living life to the fullest!
I'm blown away by Venom's progress!! He's still getting used to things, but he let me touch and hold his leg this morning!
