Effective November 18, 2021, Montrose Animal Services will not share "courtesy posts" or any information about animals that are not in the custody of Montrose Animal Services. The purpose of the City of Montrose Animal Services adoption program is to find responsible, lifelong homes for animals that are suitable as family companions. Making such matches requires us to know the needs of the animals to be placed and that of their prospective adopters. We want to ensure that the animal will not be placed in a home where it may fail to be provided adequate food, water, shelter, veterinary care, and companionship. We also want to ensure that the animal is not placed with owners who allow them to roam the neighborhood, violate animal control laws, or reproduce adding to the community’s burden of unwanted animals. The City of Montrose Animal Services follows certain guidelines when considering an applicant for adoption of a pet. Some items that are taken into consideration are: adopter suitability for specific pet, adopter’s history of animal ownership, reason for wanting to adopt, suitable confinement, and children in the household and their ages. The City of Montrose Animal Services reserves the right to refuse to adopt an animal based on our adoption policy. The City of Montrose Animal Services does not adopt pets to be used as gifts. Before adopting any animal, The City of Montrose Animal Services asks that you consider your ability to provide the animal its basic needs, including food, shelter, companionship, veterinary care, grooming, training, and exercise. Special requirements of the breed and its suitability to your household should also be considered. The City of Montrose Animal Services will ask you to fill out a 2-page application and go through your background check. You must be over 21 years old. If you rent, we need your landlord's approval first. You can bring your rental lease stating that you are allowed to have pets in the property. Sometimes the landlord requires a pet deposit. It should be done first. We need to see your driver's license and current address. If your driver’s license doesn’t have the current address, bring proof of residence(utility bill, mail, etc) that states your name and current address. If you reside within the City of Montrose, you may have 2 dogs and 2 cats. All Adoptions are considered final. If for any reason you wish to return the adopted animal, you may do so within one week of the adoption date, with no consequences. After the one-week period, the animal may be returned; however, you will be subject to a relinquishment fee(in effect at the time of return). ADOPTION FEE WILL NOT BE REFUNDED for any animal returned to the shelter. Please understand that our questions are not meant to be intrusive or suspicious. Our careful approach to making satisfying, lifelong matches can spare your family a painful experience. For the animal, however, it can be a matter of life or death. Each pet in the Shelter has experienced at least one broken bond already.
