It’s that time of year again for fireworks. If our dogs have a fear of fireworks, or other loud noises, we’ve had all year to make accommodations on getting them acclimated and acceptable of them. As a responsible pet owner, if that hasn’t happened yet, it’s not other people’s fault…it’s ours. With that being said, some choose to go the easy route, which is just a band aid, and medicate them. If you want to REALLY fix the issue, permanently, then take this free advice:

Put your dog on leash, go on a walk before they start. When you’re done, walk out to the backyard with them still on leash, sit in a lawn chair while having them stand/sit/lay next to you…their choice of the 3, but NO holding them. When the fireworks start just sit there calmly and quietly, enjoying the fireworks, while also not acknowledging any behavior. Ignore everything as, if it’s not even happening. The more we talk, the more we confirm the situation. They are afraid because they don’t understand it. Once they understand that it won’t hurt them, and that you are there as their leader and best friend, they will start to trust and understand…the fear melts away.

We have 2 weeks until the 4th. There will inevitably be smaller groups setting them off until the 4th gets here. Use this time to acclimate them with the small ones, so when it comes time for the big ones, you aren’t starting with worse case scenario.

To recap:
Remember, our dogs mental health and well-being is OUR responsibility, not others. Good luck, and let’s make this the year we help our best friends become more confident.

How a Dog Behaviourist Works.

Dog walkers, dog trainers, and anyone working with dogs should understand these basic principles. This is the foundation that is often overlooked when a dog presents behaviours that are considered unwelcome. The behaviour that you are seeing is the symptom of something in the environment. Understanding Your Dog’s Behaviour

Most behaviour problems are not caused by a ‘bad dog’.
They happen because of three things:
Context – what’s going on
Choice – what your dog can do
Consent – how your dog feels

Context – What’s going on?
Your dog is affected by their environment and how they feel.
This includes tiredness, stress, pain, noise, and past experiences.
Your dog reacts to how they feel, not just what they see.

Choice – What can your dog do?
Dogs need options like moving away or taking space.
When they don’t have these options, they can feel trapped.
This is when behaviour often escalates.

Consent – Is your dog comfortable?
Dogs show how they feel through behaviour.
Relaxed dogs engage willingly.
Uncomfortable dogs avoid, freeze, or react.
A quiet dog is not always a comfortable dog.

Putting it together
If your dog reacts, it is usually because:
• The situation feels too much
• They have no safe option
• They are not comfortable
The behaviour is communication.

What helps
• Reduce pressure in the environment
• Give your dog more space and options
• Don’t force interaction
When these improve, behaviour improves.

Key message
Your dog is responding to:
Context • Choice • Consent
Change these, and you change behaviour.
