Rainy Days Satins

Rainy Days Satins ARBA registered rabbitry in central Oklahoma focusing on show quality red Satins. Displaying Satin, Rexed, and Waved pelts; ss, rr, and wawa.

We have two main projects we are breeding towards here at Rainy Days.

• The first and main project is show quality red Satins that excel in body type, red intensity, and growth rate. They should exceed on the show table and dinner table alike.

•Avant-garde Reza Breeding Project

Macro-goals: Commercial body type with great depth and width of loin being the focus and fullness to table. For eas

e I will refer to this as SRW. Micro-goals: Oversized prick ears for increased heat tolerance. Good growth rate, ideally hitting 5 lbs by 10 weeks of age but will select up to 12 weeks at this stage. Growth can and will be selected for later. Prefer a medium sized adult with commercial growth rates.

Lady Barbosa kindled 4 little rexed babies yesterday morning and while she did build a nest and pull some fur, they were cold and unresponsive when I found them. Luckily yesterday morning was pretty mild and in the 40s so I was able to revive three of them! She didn't have any interest in taking care of her first litter so I was worried she might not this time either, but she proved me wrong this morning! She had pulled more fur and when I gave her the kits back she immediately hopped in to feed them 🥳

That's great news because I'm going to be able to foster a few of Fire Starter's litter into this smaller one, pull Fire Starter down to 7 kits and Lady Barbosa up to 6.

Surprisingly Lady Barbosa kindled a bunch of rex coated babes that all carry the satin texture gene so if they type out well they would be great assets to the Reza project. 🙌

(Fire Cider currently has two of Lady Barbosa's previous litter and they are doing very well with her.)

Fire Starter's litter of 10 after getting fed, and Lady Barbosa's 3 that were born at some time this morning. They were cold and "dead" but revived with some skin-to-skin while I did morning chores.

Hopefully Lady Barbosa will take care of them and a few of Fire Starter's litter 🤞

Put them all together for now to stay warm and cozy.

Trying out a new phone that's supposed to have a better camera than my old one and ... I'm not impressed. 😩 This is the second one I've tried only to be disappointed. I'd love to keep my old phone but it's not supported by AT&T and the storage space is pretty limited. (Vs this new one with 512GB.) It was running pretty badly but the pictures were 👌✨ Would I be an idiot to get that same phone just with more space? I can deal with the cell service being LTE but I cannot deal with cruddy cameras. EDIT: Apparently same phone+more space is impossible to obtain 💔 idk what to do.

Well, it was bound to happen. The texture genetics rabbit gods are appeased and the scales have been balanced once more. ⚖️

Fuego has been consistently siring way more satinized offspring than he should statistically be producing, with stats like 75% of a litter being satinized when only half should, or 50% of the litter being satinized when only a quarter should be.

This is Acorns 3rd litter with him I believe, and not a single kit is shiny. All 8 are normal coated 😂🫠😩 Most are nice and dark though, great depth of color on the majority.

Ugh, so disappointed. Finally got around to going through an 8 week old F1 litter that I was very much excited about to see that only 2 kits out of the litter of 8 are does. I have ZERO need for F1 bucks and my favorite two of the group? Bucks, of course.

It's a decent litter as a whole, good shoulders on the group, some are a little flatter in body than I'd like but it did turn out well imo.

Idk exactly what I'm going to do, probably hold onto my favorite buck from the group anyway, and then gripe and complain about having too many breeder bucks. 🤷🏼‍♀️ I'll pose the does up in the next couple of days and pray they magically look better later. I'll be keeping one of them, there's a good chance they'll produce better than what they are, being a breed outcross and then linebreeding back towards the Satin side.

Hot Mess decided on a corner instead of a nestbox, but I was lucky enough to be out there right when she finished kindling and quickly moved the kits into a box. She did NOT pull any fur, so I'll probably do that this evening, right now they're in Acorns fur since she recently pulled a mountain of it for her kits, lol.

She had a total of 7 kits, 1 had passed by the time I saw them. 6 satinized reds!

Acorn kindled 8 lovely red buns 🍞 a couple of days ago. Video taken yesterday. As usual, an A+ job! Acorn x Fuego, 50/50 Satin/NZ (Same breeding as I did for Roux and Baba Yaga. Hoping for more shiny red keepers!)

Fostering rabbit kits

Well I gave Fire Cider the three kits from Lady Barbosa, there was a chance Barbosa would pull it together and feed them but she frankly just didn't know what to do when I gave her the nestbox with kits. She'd hop in, then out. Then in, and out. Oh well, maybe next time honey! This brings Fire Cider's litter up to 11 kits 🫣 which I don't love. She'll have no problem feeding 11, she's well seasoned and makes fat babies, but I prefer litters around 6-8 kits.

Unsurprisingly Fire Cider did an amazing job kindling her litter with Jax's Boomerang, the tri Rex buck. 👏 She's such a stellar momma, always making me proud. 8 big fatties. Unfortunately I think only one is Rex coated 🫠

Fostering baby rabbits

Lady Barbosa was due to kindle today and kind of dropped the ball yesterday instead. 😒 She had pulled a little bit of fur yesterday morning and put it in her nestbox so I was hopeful that she was just doing some early prepping and since she knows she wants the fur in the box that she'll kindle her kits in there too... Well apparently she kindled sometime after noon and most did NOT make it to the nestbox. I came out to 5 dead kits outside of the box and 3 chilled kits inside the box in the tiny bit of pulled fluff. 💔 I tried to warm up a couple of the unresponsive tricolors without much optimism and unfortunately my skepticism was well placed; they did not revive. I moved the three living babies in with Fire Starter's warm, older litter so they would at least be taken care of. This morning I gave all 6 back to Fire Starter to feed and she had zero qualms about feeding an extra three baldies. I then moved Barbosa's babies into her nestbox with her little bit of fur to see if she would hop on to feed and she did not. She was curious about them but in the end ignored the fact they existed so back in with the older litter they went. At least they're cozy and fed. 💕 Fire Cider is due tomorrow but looks to be having them early (LOT of pulled fur at the time of this post) so they'll probably hop in with them provided she doesn't have like, 10. EDIT: Fire Cider kindled around 1:30pm and had 8 big fatties, all birthed in a wonderful nest.

It's cold enough outside that when I ripped my fingernail past the quick while loading hay and didn't even notice until I saw the dried blood later 🙃 nice little numbing effect 18°F has.

We hit 13°F last night and apparently Fire Starter decided she needed to pull even more fur for her kits, lol. Found a big bundle of it this morning. "Just in case, I mean, it's really cold.." Fat bellies today!
